The sun had just begun to set, casting a soft orange hue over the sky, when I pulled up my Beetle outside the police precinct. It was the same place I had brought in Umbridge less than a week before. As I approached the front door, I noticed the workers were busy with their tasks and didn’t pay much attention to me. However, some of them who knew me shot me “please leave” glances as I walked past them. Ignoring their looks, I made my way to Dan’s desk and pulled up a chair to sit down.
Dan was sorting through a messy pile of papers when he looked up and saw me. He immediately backed away, his expression stern and serious.“Do you want to get me fired?” he asked. “You know you’re no longer allowed in here unless you’re here to report a crime.”
Ignoring his words, I leaned in closer, my voice low and steady. “Who bailed Michael Umbridge? They found him dead today.”
Dan’s fingers ran through his hair, tugging at the strands as he felt a surge of frustration. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, “but I can’t give you that information.”
I was visibly irked by his response and slammed my fists down on Dan’s desk. “Bullshit! Either you give me a name or show me the video surveillance of who was waiting for him outside when he left.”
Dan took a deep breath and held it for a moment, waiting until someone passed by his desk before he leaned forward over the piles of paperwork that littered his workspace. His eyes darted around the office, making sure no one was listening in on our conversation.
“Why do you want that information? Huh? They found the guy in his home, his wrists cut open and a note saying why he did it. He lost all his money, received an eviction notice, and had nothing left in this world. It’s an apparent suicide, and the case was closed.” Dan frowned. “Shouldn’t have told you that. Unless you’ve got compelling information I should know about, I’m afraid I can’t help you. Please leave before one of my bosses sees you.”
I groaned, but I still had that gnawing feeling deep inside of me that wouldn’t go away.
“When I caught Umbridge, he said if I took him in, people would find and kill him. Also, when I placed him in my car, two black SUVs flanked me and demanded I hand him over to them. I thought they could be competition, but Moe confirmed that the contract wasn’t open. I find it strange that he’s found dead in his home shortly after being released. I mean, what are the odds?”
Dan’s attention was immediately drawn to the mention of the black SUVs. He pushed his chair back and gestured for me to follow him. I complied, and we walked to the surveillance room.
“I can’t believe I’m doing this… I can’t give you a name, but I can show you the recordings,” Dan said once we were inside the room. “You’ll have to draw your own conclusions, though. Someone paid Umbridge’s bail the following morning, and they picked him up in a black SUV.”
Dan sat down in front of the bank of monitors and selected the desired camera. He rewound the footage to the day Umbridge was released from custody. There, on the screen, was a black SUV, similar to the ones that had stopped us earlier. A man dressed in a black suit and sunglasses got out of the car, helped Umbridge inside, and drove off.
“Zoom in on the license plate, please, and give me a pen and paper,” I said.
I scribbled down the number and put the paper in my back pocket. I was about to leave when Dan grabbed my arm and stopped me.
“Listen, I know you’re very resourceful and have a lot of old contacts, but you might find yourself way over your head. Just promise me that you’ll tell me if you find something substantial in this case,” he said.
“I feel like you know more than you’re letting on,” I replied, crossing my arms and staring at him.
When he didn’t respond, I sighed and said, “Fine. If I find anything worth mentioning, I’ll let you know.”
Dan gave me a tight smile. He then escorted me back to the building’s entrance. I thanked him again and walked back to my car, feeling a sense of unease creeping up on me.
I gripped the steering wheel tightly and let my head fall onto it, trying to make sense of the situation. I needed to go to the DMV to get a name for the license plate and find out who bailed the guy.
I didn’t think it was just a coincidence.
Starting the car, I looked at the clock and realized that the DMV was already closed. I didn’t know what to do with the rest of my night. I had given up a perfect date for a lead that could turn out to be a dead end.
I froze at the thought of calling my meeting with Lukas a date. “Not a date,” I repeated sternly to myself. I put the car in reverse and drove to Sal’s, hoping to clear my mind.
As I drove, I noticed a black SUV trailing three cars behind me. Although it was a popular type of vehicle, I started to worry that it might be following me. Every time I made a turn, I looked for opportunities to shake it off, but it kept following me, always keeping at least one car’s distance. I didn’t want to take any chances, so I decided to take a different route to Sal’s.
I parked my car on the last level of a multi-level public parking space and waited for the SUV to arrive. When it didn’t show up, I grabbed my bag, which contained my training clothes, and got out of the car. Since my home was nearby, I decided to leave my car there overnight.
I secured the bag’s sling over my head and leaned out from the concrete wall to see below. The SUV was parked on the side of the street, and its tinted black windows made it impossible to see inside. However, I still heard the engine running.
I stood on the edge of the multi-level parking lot, and I saw that the apartment building’s roof, situated beside the parking lot, was at the same level as me. I backed away and leaped over. When I landed, I quickly moved to the far side, found the fire escape, and made my way down.
Once my feet hit the street, I popped my head toward where I had seen the SUV, and sure enough, it was still there with the engine running. I turned around and started walking briskly toward Sal’s, which was about six blocks away.
When I arrived at Sal’s, I was surprised to see Lukas sitting by the side of the door. He quickly brushed the back of his jeans and walked over to me when he saw me. I felt tiny butterflies slowly swarming in my stomach. There goes my common sense, I thought. Despite my reservations, I was happy to see him again, especially after how I had left him at the café.
Lukas spoke, rubbing his jaw and then his neck. “I thought I’d find you here. I didn’t get your phone number, and I really wanted to see you again.”
I moved over to where he was standing. His gaze burned my skin, making me blush. I could sense his anxiety and uncertainty about how I would react to seeing him. I tried to lighten the mood with a joke, but it came out harsher than I had intended. “So you stalked me?”
When I saw the colour of his bronze skin pale, I cursed under my breath. I didn’t talk to many people, and I was clearly out of practice.
“Sorry about earlier. Are you up for another one-on-one? I want to make it up to you.” I nodded toward the gym door, and I saw Lukas’s mood brighten.
I went first, Lukas trailing behind me. His body heat seeped into the back of my clothes. Tingling shivers ran down my spine, making the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. I hoped he didn’t notice the effect he had on me.
I’d never experienced anything like it before. Whenever I was around other men, I never felt this way. But with Lukas, it was like a bolt of lightning struck me every time I saw him.
Since I was the only girl who came here, Sal had offered me the use of his office as my changing room. That way, I had a little privacy. I changed into a sports bra and leggings, pulled my hair into a high ponytail, and waited for Lukas to leave the changing room.
When Lukas finally came out, he stopped dead in his tracks and looked at me with a look of hunger in his eyes. I tried my best to play it cool and pretend that I hadn’t noticed, but deep down, I was flattered by his heated gaze.
Fuck, why am I acting so pathetic around him?
“I just need a few minutes to limber up,” I explained, gesturing toward the open space on the far side of the room. “We can meet over there on the mat.”
Lukas gave me a sly smirk and strutted over to the area I had indicated. I bent down to touch my toes, exhaling deeply as I sensed the day’s tension in my muscles gradually release. I stood back up, noticing Sal approaching me with a bright grin on his face. However, the smile faded slightly as the bell attached to the main door jingled, and David walked in.
If there was one guy in the gym who desperately wanted to beat me in a sparring match, it was David. He was a good fighter, fair game, and entertaining when we fought, but I disliked how he always touched me. It was deliberate; he enjoyed touching my ass or brushing himself against my breasts, always ending the match with catcalls and the promise of a good fuck. David wasn’t hard on the eye and had a certain sex appeal, but he did nothing for me. He was just another moron, thinking they owned the world.
“Hiya Sal. Max, smoking hot as always,” David said while spanking my ass.
“Oh, bite me,” I growled, slapping his hand away.
I stood upright, placing my hands on my hips and glared at David, who shrank back from my gaze. I knew I was intimidating when I wanted to be; however, I didn’t think I was that frightening. I cocked my head to the side, looking at his retreating form, and looked over at Sal, whose stare was directed toward my back.
I twisted my head and saw Lukas looming over me. It became clear that David wasn’t running away from me but from Lukas. Concerned, I placed my hand on his chest and asked, “Are you alright?” I felt the heat emanating from his body, and I saw the veins on his neck throbbing each time his heart pumped.
I blinked, but Lukas grabbed my hand before I could remove it and pulled me toward the changing room. I tried to free myself, but his grip was too firm. Once we were inside the changing room, he pushed me against the lockers and trapped me between his arms. His hot breath on my face.
“Friend of yours?” Lukas asked through his teeth, his face only inches from mine.
What the hell was his deal?
“Not really,” I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. More like my honorary punching bag. David’s an ass, but it’s nothing I can’t handle.”
Lukas’s proximity shot bolts of electricity through my body. I felt my nipples harden as his chest brushed against the thin fabric of my sports bra, and I fought a sudden urge to moan.
He dipped his head close to the crook of my neck and inhaled loudly. He then returned his amber eyes to me, increasing the tension between us tenfold.
“I don’t like to share,” his baritone voice was gruff, and his breath tingled my skin.
I frowned at his comment, and before I could retort something clever, Lukas crashed his lips to mine, stifling the word that would come out of my mouth.
The surprise of his action caught me off-guard, and as much as my mind was screaming at me to push him back, my body begged for more.
This was crazy. I barely knew Lukas, yet I never wanted a man as much as I did him.
My arms instinctively snaked up to his thick neck and pulled him closer. I hadn’t realized how tense Lukas had been until his body melted against mine.
He dragged his hands the length of my body, stopping mere inches away from my ass, then his grip tightened, and he lifted me, making me circle my legs around his midsection. He groaned against my mouth, making my breath hitch.
Lukas pulled his lips away from mine but ground his growing erection between my legs.
“Tell me you don’t want this, and I’ll stop, or else I fear I’ll devour you right here.”
I opened my mouth to reply to his invitation, but the door to the changing room suddenly opened, and I found myself caught off guard. In a moment of panic, I hastily jumped down and pressed my back against the lockers, hoping to conceal the redness that crept up my cheeks. A customer walked in, casting a suspicious glance our way, and I felt increasingly self-conscious. I turned to leave, placing a hand over my mouth to conceal my shock, but Lukas took hold of my arm and stopped me. His touch sent shivers down my spine.
“Meet me here at six tomorrow evening,” he said, his voice low and husky.
Lukas opened the locker, which contained his belongings, and leaned in to kiss my cheek before leaving. I watched him go, my heart racing with a mix of excitement and confusion. I was unable to move from the shock of what had just happened. When the other man left the room, I took a deep breath and tried to compose myself. I smoothed out my hair and checked myself in the mirror, my hands shaking slightly.
Looking at my reflection, I had a hard time recognizing the face staring back at me. My pupils were dilated, my face was red and warm, and my lips were slightly swollen from Lukas’s rough kiss. I felt a mix of emotions—part of me was thrilled by the unexpected encounter, while another part was undecided.
I cursed under my breath, left the room, took my stuff, and headed home. After what happened, I’d need to take a cold shower and have a reality check.
Lukas POVI pushed the exit door and paced outside of Salvatore’s boxing gym. The tightness of my pants made it unbearable to walk, so I tried to reposition my swollen bulge, but it did nothing to help. Why the fuck did I kiss Max like that? But most importantly, why didn’t she push me away like I thought she would? When Max left abruptly during our coffee together, I had a sudden pang of longing to see her again. Unfortunately, I had no means of contacting her, as the file Jace had given me contained almost no information on her. At that point, I had only been tailing her from Mortimer’s bail bonds to her house, then to the boxing studio. I thought it would be just another simple job of tracking and reporting. But as soon as I entered Sal’s and saw her move, how she fought, and how she carried herself, I knew right then and there that she was the most curious and beautiful creature I had ever seen. Max was a force of nature. I had sparred with her and hadn’t even gone easy on her, bu
As the clock struck a quarter past three, I pulled my old and reliable VW into the parking lot of the Department of Motor Vehicles. I had some time to kill before I was due to meet Lukas at six, and I wanted to investigate the license plate that Dan had given me. My curiosity was piqued by the possibility that it might belong to the Harrington and Leigh Corporation. Umbridge had warned me that people would find and kill him, but he never specified who they were. I wondered if he meant the corporation he stole from and if there was some connection between them and Umbridge’s predicament. It seemed too much of a coincidence to ignore.Once I parked my car, I made my way into the DMV and scanned the area for Doris. She was a familiar face here, the oldest employee by far, and well past her retirement age. Despite this, she refused to retire and clung to her job as if it were a lifeline. Her friends had died soon after they retired, and Doris was convinced that if she stopped working, she
I asked Lukas with a grin, “Are you ready for round two?” I had secured my hand wrappings and was eager to change my mind with our sparring session.Unfortunately, Lukas didn’t seem to share my excitement. He frowned and responded, “I’d love that, but that’s not what I had in mind.” His beautiful amber eyes were hidden beneath thick black lashes, and his long curly hair fell on his face. I resisted the urge to come closer and remove the strands from his face.I slightly jumped in place and made small circles with my wrists to warm up. I needed to think of something else.Lukas continued, “I was hoping we could go out and grab a bite to eat. Since you didn’t tell me where you lived, I thought it best to meet here.”Lukas was dressed casually and wasn’t prepared for a fight. He wore dark-washed jeans over his construction boots and a white T-shirt underneath a black jacket. My heart screamed, “Yes! Yes!” but I had to force other words out. “I’m sorry, but I’ve had a rough day today. I wo
I skillfully picked the lock to Umbridge’s apartment and managed to slip inside without disturbing the red police tape wrapped around the door. Once inside, I made sure to lock the door behind me and tip-toed around the few remaining markers on the floor, trying my best to leave no trace of my presence. As I explored the apartment, I was overcome with a feeling of frustration and exhaustion. The night with Lukas had been a disaster, and I barely managed to get any sleep at all. I had woken up at sunrise and taken a cold shower before heading to Moe’s to obtain the Michael Umbridge file. With the file in hand, I had come straight to Umbridge’s home to investigate. However, my hopes were soon crushed. Everything appeared to have already been thoroughly searched and investigated. Every possible piece of evidence, including the trash cans, had been removed, leaving me with nothing to work with.I summarized the pool of dried blood that stained the floor had been where Umbridge died. It was
I pressed the intercom button at the police precinct and waited for the robotic-sounding voice to respond. When it did, I presented myself and stated that I had another skip for processing, and the person on the other end sent two police officers to take the perp off my hands.I decided to lie low after my completely illegal investigation of the Umbridge case a few days ago, and I hadn’t seen or heard from Lukas in days. The feeling I had was the same as when you give your phone number to some cute guy with a promise of a call, and he never does. It was irritating and humiliating, even more so since I had jumped on him and savagely made out with his face. The back door to the precinct opened, and police officer Dan came down. He always came when he knew I was bringing someone in. However, the look he gave me when we met sent chills down my spine. If a look could kill, I’d already be dead and buried six feet under.“What crawled up your asshole today?” I muttered to Dan while handing hi
I walked into Mortimer’s Bail Bonds and collapsed into the seat in front of Bea. She glanced at me from under her lashes, then stopped typing and pushed her glasses up her nose with her index finger.“Already done?”I handed her a small stack of bail bond paperwork, and she quickly reviewed it, entering all the information into the computer system. But when she reached the last case, she gave me a stern look.“Four? You’ve caught four skips in one week? Honey, maybe it’s time to take a break,” Bea said, her eyes filled with concern.I waved my hand dismissively. “It’s nothing. I’m just trying to keep myself busy. This is an excellent distraction.”Bea’s eyes softened, but she still looked worried. She and Moe always knew I liked to keep myself occupied, but maybe I had gone a little too far this time. I had been chasing and handcuffing people non-stop, barely taking the time to eat or sleep. It was a wonder I hadn’t started smoking cigarettes with all the stress I was putting myself un
Jace POVThe night was starting on a high note, and I was elated by the turnout at the opening of my new vampire nightclub. The club was designed to cater to the needs of the vampire community in the city, providing them with a safe and secure environment where they could socialize, conduct business, and have fun with their pets outside of business hours.I wanted to create a space that would not only serve their needs but also promote peaceful coexistence between vampires and humans. This club would also serve as a distributor for the synthetic blood created by the Harrington and Leigh Corporation, known as V Blood, which was a game-changer for the community. The launch of V Blood was the highlight of the century, and the Harrington and Leigh Corporation hoped that it would put an end to vampires robbing hospitals or killing humans needlessly to obtain the blood they so desperately needed to survive. Synthetic blood was a revolutionary product that would enable us to coexist with huma
I gradually woke up, and my head throbbed mercilessly. I opened one eye and noticed a glass of water sitting next to two pills and a note, which seemed to have been placed there with care. I groaned and turned away from the intrusive light, shielding my face with a pillow. Suddenly, a wave of memories from the previous night crashed over me, leaving me feeling disoriented and vulnerable. I recalled seeing Lukas and drinking a copious amount of whiskey to numb the pain that still lingered from our last encounter. I had hoped to make him jealous if he was watching. I faintly remembered possibly kissing Jace, but then everything went hazy, and I must have blacked out. After gathering my courage, I tossed the pillow aside and reached for the pills, my fingers trembling. I washed them down with the water, feeling the cool liquid soothing my parched throat. I then turned to the note, dreading what it might reveal about my behaviour the previous night. I hoped I hadn’t embarrassed myself too
I was high from meeting the director at the children’s home. My discussion with the director yielded interesting facts about the home and its desperate need for funds. The government provided what it could, but the man running the establishment informed me it wasn’t enough. It didn't surprise me. More and more children came into their custody, and they had difficulty finding foster homes. I elatedly accepted the director's promise to inform the board members and send me the paperwork in the coming weeks after discussing my plans to donate money and what I would like to help them with. My interest in funding couldn’t have come at a better time. I barely saw the car ride pass; I was already pulling up the small dirt road leading to Lukas’s cabin in the woods. Lexie stayed there for the moment while Lukas crashed either at his house or at my place. We had taken the habit of coming over there for dinner every two or three days to keep Lex company and to unwind. I was the first to arri
6 months laterMy finger pressed the intercom button of the police precinct.“Yes?” The robotic-sounding voice asked.“It’s Max. I have a Talulah Townsend for processing.”“Someone will be down shortly.”Talulah had broken parole and hadn’t attended her mandatory drug test. She had been my easiest catch of the week. I only had to drive down the drug strip to find her with a needle stabbed in her arm, half passed out from the shot. She was younger than me, and it broke my heart to see her like this.Oh, the joys of getting back into the trenches. After a long break, I did my best to return to my everyday life. The back door of the station opened, and Officer Dan and a colleague walked out to take the skip. When the woman was in custody, Dan removed her cuffs and returned them to me.“I heard you were back on the job. Christ, Max. You scared the shit out of me when you stopped showing up here! They told me you probably took a vacation, but I know you. Your job’s your life,” Dan said with
The wait was killing me. My leg impatiently shook when I sat on the chair. The lobby under the justice court building was brightly lit and warm. I had never been in that section before. If I didn’t have Moe guiding me through the separate hallway that brought us here, in the basement, I would have never suspected there was a place specifically designed for vampire laws. The fact that I was meeting the congregation was the least of my problems. My mind was on Lukas, whom I hadn’t seen since the fight with Ventura four days before. Jace didn’t want me to see him and had given me very few updates on his health, but the one news that kept bothering me was that the broken ribs were more important than we initially thought. Some had pierced his lungs and had caused damages that Jace feared Lukas would have issues healing correctly. There was also a matter about the drug Ventura and Mike had given Lukas to sedate him, which seemed to cause abnormal delays in his healing.I felt terrible becau
Ventura’s fingers tightened around my neck, and I struggled to breathe.“There goes that defiant hiss again. You’re becoming quite the little vampire. You sound just like one,” he said with a growing hatred. “Do you know how much trouble you’ve been giving me? You killed my small human army of hunters who would do my future bidding. I had a chance at a surprise attack on the Harringtons, but you blew it! You were unsuccessful at making more of yourself and serving me. Why shouldn’t I just snap your pretty neck and be done with it? All my troubles would die along with you.”My hands instinctively circled his forearm to remove some of the pressure. When I saw black spots everywhere, my grip on him lessened. I couldn’t break free, and I thought this was the end. Surprisingly, Ventura let go and grabbed the front of my vest, dragging me on my back to where Lukas and Jace were.“Pathetic girl,” Ventura spat as he dropped me beside my mates. “It doesn’t matter. Everything I need to start my
I stopped my car in front of an old abandoned warehouse on 9th Street. Many were in the sector, but just as the letter said, I knew exactly which one it was. The run-down name of the company was barely visible, but the logo of an owl still showed, reminding me of the Noctua sigil. I could be wrong, but this building seemed the right one.I walked to the warehouse, looking for an entrance. The previous owner had barricaded all the entries with pieces of wood and chains. I groaned and trudged along the exterior to find another way to gain access. When I was about to retrace my steps and search another building, I spotted a broken window on the second floor.“Great,” I mumbled exasperatingly. “As if I do parkour in my spare time.”There was a ledge on the lower window, and I noticed a gutter installed on the wall close to it. I pulled up my leather jacket sleeves and lightly ran for a jump to get a high start. I climbed the downspout until I was at level with the ledge, and I swung my bod
I strolled down the street, taking in the city’s nightly smells. After some time, I stopped and took a deep breath. The neighbourhood was silent, and only the distant sound of car horns honking reminded me that life went on while I was away. The last time I stood in front of my apartment complex, I was drugged in a cab and kidnapped.I hurried along the entrance and pushed the glass doors open. The trek up the stairs was quick, and I walked to my door to unlock it. In the two weeks I was gone, nothing had changed. My apartment had been left untouched, and the little possessions I had left were still in their place. I was surprised. I thought the vampires would have ransacked my home to find any information on me.I opened my mini-fridge and pulled out the last remaining beer bottle.I reflected on Jace, Lukas, Moe and Bea’s plan as I sat. They wanted to draw out Ventura from wherever he was hiding, and the only thing they thought would succeed was to resume my life. Ventura would try t
Jace POVI watched Max from afar. She was a small thing compared to the tall vampire she called Moe. She had been with those two since their return to the cabin, and it slightly irritated me to have to share Max with two other vampires—one werewolf was already enough.“You’re doing that thing again. Stop it,” Lukas called from behind.I turned around and smugly slouched. “What exactly am I doing?”“I’ve known you for years, Jace. I know all your telltale signs. You know something that you haven’t told anyone. Spill.”My friend’s amber eyes darkened menacingly. I sighed and pressed a hand over my face. Lukas was an annoying dog but had good intentions.“I knew the congregation had released Ventura before coming here.”Lukas watched me from a distance. His face was becoming red, but I ignored it. Why was Lukas getting angry with me?“When were you planning on telling us?”I shrugged and crossed my arms. “This morning, but I didn’t think it was important.”“You should have told us the min
Lukas and Jace’s kisses lingered on my skin before I stepped under the water. It washed away their scent on my body, and I sighed. My fingers trailed the length of my neck and hovered over my swollen lips. They still tingled from Lukas and Jace’s bites. My face heated at the memory of Jace telling me to go on top of Lukas. I had never had sex with two men at the same time, and when Lukas filled my dripping wet pussy, and Jace stretched my ass with his dick, I almost forgot how to breathe. The feeling I had in the pit of my stomach was dreadful, yet exciting. The sensation had been odd and pleasing. My skin shivered with need and all the dirty things I wanted the three of us to do. I had both of them in me, and each thrust and withdrawal had me wanting, no, almost begging for more. I couldn’t seem to get enough of them. Their cocks filled each cavity perfectly, and their rhythms were in delightful unison. It was even more thrilling when Lukas and Jace gave me the reins, and I could choo
Lukas POVThe smell of Max’s arousal woke me. I had been lightly asleep but was now fully awake, and my dick painfully swelled inside my boxers in response.I didn’t want to act on her scent because I didn’t know if she was excited for me or for Jace, who was inconveniently sleeping on Max’s other side.I needed to change my mind. Anything was better than thinking of everything I wanted to do to Max.I thought back to what had happened before I went to sleep. After furiously running in wolf form, I returned to the cabin and found Jace waiting beside Max’s sleeping shape on the bed. He had gotten here much faster than I wanted, and I despised every second of him brushing his light fingers against the pale white skin of her bare legs.No amount of yelling and violent disagreements could remove Jace’s bond with Max. She was as much his as she was mine. Jace and I both made our claims, and the rest was history. We would be there for her, but Jace and I would need to have a more profound di
