SERENA POV

The gun was pointed directly at my chest.

For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe. My mother stood across the room, the woman who had held me through every fever, who had taught me to cook, who had once told me that love without money was worthless. The woman who had cried when I left home. Her finger rested on the trigger, and her hand was shaking.

'This isn't real. It can't be.'

"Mom?" The word barely left my throat.

"I told you I was sorry."

Kael stepped in front of me before

SERENA POV"You're crushing the appointment card."I looked down. The paper was folded tight between my fingers, its edges bent from how hard I'd been gripping it. I smoothed it against my thigh. "I'm not nervous."Kael glanced over from the driver's seat. "Of course not.""I mean it.""So do I.""You're agreeing too quickly. It's suspicious."He smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes.We were headed to the clinic for my follow-up scan. They'd explained that the first scan had happened early enough that some measurements needed repeating. No immediate concern, they'd said. My imagination had ignored that and found new reasons to panic anyway. Every ache had become evidence. Every wave of tiredness felt like a mistake I was making.'Pregnancy comes with uncertainty. I know that. Knowing it and feeling it are different animals.'Kael reached across the console and opened his hand. I placed mine in it."I could ask the clinician to write every answer down twice," he offered. "One copy for

SERENA POV"If the Alpha's office can't investigate itself, why should anyone trust it to investigate others?"My question hit the council chamber harder than I'd intended.A few members traded uncomfortable glances. Others stared as though I'd strolled into their meeting and personally insulted their mothers. I folded my hands tightly in front of me to stop them from fidgeting. The charter review was barely twenty minutes old, and I already regretted speaking first. Not because I was wrong. Because being right in a room full of people who loved the old arrangement was exhausting.Daniel sat at the end of the table with the amended charter. Marcus held a seat near the center. Kael sat several rows back, a silent observer, his executive authority suspended, refusing to use his presence to sway anyone. I was grateful. If I was going to speak, my words had to be mine.Councilman Harrow straightened his cuffs. "No one says complaints should be ignored, Miss Serena. The worry is that an in

"Ruth didn't submit this."I said it before Kael finished reading the objection for the third time.He looked up. "You sound certain.""I spoke to her yesterday. She agreed to attend the review if Daniel put the confidentiality terms in writing. She hadn't even decided whether to speak.""That doesn't prove she didn't change her mind.""No, but it proves we ask her before we accuse her."He studied me, then nodded. "Fair."He called Marcus back at once. "Don't circulate this as Ruth's position. Record the signature as disputed and request confirmation from her directly. No public accusations until it's verified."He ended the call and reached for his coat."Where are you going?""To see Daniel.""I'm coming.""Serena, you don't have to join every fight.""Neither do you, apparently. You're suspended, remember?"His mouth tightened. I raised an eyebrow, bracing for a speech about caring for the territory regardless of title. Instead he exhaled through his nose."That was unnecessarily

SERENA POV"You're not putting my name on that list."Ruth Calder's voice cut through the provisional Pack Advocate office, and every conversation died at once.I turned from the table where Daniel and I had been buried in charter amendments. Ruth stood by the entrance, strangling a folded document in both fists. Her husband Thomas hovered behind her, shoulders rigid, face worn thin with exhaustion.Daniel rose. "Ruth, nobody puts your name on anything without your consent. Which list?"She thrust the paper at him. "Residents willing to speak at the council review. A woman at the market told me that if I testify, the people behind our relocation will know exactly who complained. She said troublemakers get investigated for something else.""Did she give her name?""Of course not. People who threaten you never do."Daniel studied the page. "Then we can't prove she's connected to the council. But we can answer your fear directly. Nobody will be forced to speak publicly, and we can ask th

SERENA POV"The money has been recovered."Daniel's words stopped Serena halfway through the doorway. She stared at him, waiting for the rest of the sentence. "All of it?""Not all of it. Don't look so ready to celebrate." He lifted a folder from the desk. "The financial recovery team confirmed that the first disputed transfer has been returned to the legally authorized recovery account. It isn't available for general spending. The court's directions and the claims verification process still apply."She released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. "But it's back.""One portion of it is. And the paperwork is finally moving in the right direction."She stepped into the provisional Pack Advocate office and shut the door. The room was busier than the day before. Two volunteers checked identity documents, another copied bank statements, and at the far end of the table a woman sat with her hands clasped tightly in her lap.Ruth Calder looked up. "Have they found our payment?"Dani

SERENA POVKael was still holding me when my phone vibrated against my hip.Neither of us moved. His arms stayed locked around my waist, his cheek resting against my hair. For a few precious seconds, I let myself pretend the world outside our embrace could wait, that there were no investigations, no suspended authority, no unresolved feelings for another man, and no promises I was afraid to make. The phone buzzed again."Are you going to answer that?" Kael murmured."Maybe it's important.""Or maybe the caller has terrible timing."I pulled back enough to see his face. "Are you complaining about my phone?""I'm considering filing a formal complaint.""With whom?"He looked at me with perfect solemnity. "The woman currently responsible for ruining a perfectly good moment."I laughed before I could stop myself. It was a small, startled sound, but his whole face softened, as if I'd handed him something precious.I checked the screen. Daniel."Serena, sorry to interrupt," he said when I a
