"If you don’t put on that dress, Clara, I will make sure you never walk out of this basement alive."

My mother’s voice was like ice poured directly down my spine. She didn't call me her daughter. She hadn't used that word for me in eighteen years. To Eleanor Montgomery, I was just a ghost, an unfortunate mistake, a curse that had blighted her life the moment I breathed my first breath.

I huddled on the cold concrete floor of the storage cellar, rubbing my bruised wrists. The sharp smell of damp mold mixed with the sickeningly sweet scent of expensive white lilies.

"Please, Mother," I whispered, my voice raw and cracking. "Evelyn is the one engaged to him. I’m not even allowed to be seen in public. How can you ask me to do this?"

A sharp slap cracked across my face. My head snapped to the side, my cheek burning with a familiar, blistering heat.

"Don't you dare speak her name with your filthy mouth!" my father, Richard Montgomery, barked from the doorway. He stepped into the dim light, his tailored tuxedo immaculate, his face twisted in utter disgust. "Evelyn is fragile. She has a delicate heart! Do you really expect our precious gem to marry a crippled monster? Gabriel Vance will break her in half!"

"So you want him to break me instead?" Tears burned behind my eyelids, but I forced them back. I refused to give them the satisfaction of seeing me cry. Not anymore.

"You are worthless anyway," my mother spat, tossing a heavy, shimmering white wedding gown onto the dusty floor in front of me. "Your sister has a bright future. She is destined for greatness. You? You are just a spare pair of organs we kept around in case Evelyn ever needed a donor. Today, you finally make yourself useful."

They were forcing me to be a substitute bride.

Everyone in the city knew the name Gabriel Vance. He was the reigning king of the financial world, a billionaire whose ruthless corporate takeovers left entire families bankrupt overnight. But two years ago, a horrific car crash paralyzed him from the waist down and scarred his left face. Since then, he had become a recluse, a tyrant hiding in his dark fortress on the hill. Rumors said he tortured his servants, bled his rivals dry, and snapped the necks of anyone who dared to pity him.

When the Montgomery business began to collapse three months ago, my father begged for a bailout. Gabriel Vance agreed—on one condition. He wanted a bride from the Montgomery bloodline to seal the business alliance. My parents eagerly offered Evelyn, pitching her as the perfect socialite bride.

Until yesterday, when a rumor leaked from the Vance estate: Gabriel’s previous three fiances had all vanished from public view, allegedly sent away in pieces after displeasing the crippled beast.

Evelyn had thrown a hysterical tantrum, weeping that she would rather die than spend her youth attending to a bitter, paralyzed tyrant. And so, the Montgomerys turned their eyes toward the basement. Toward me. The hated twin. The invisible sister.

"Put it on," my father commanded, reaching into his coat pocket. He pulled out a sleek silver syringe. "Or I will inject you with enough sedative to carry you down the aisle as a corpse. The Vances just need a girl in a white dress. They won't care if you're conscious."

I stared at the gleaming needle. My heart pounded like a trapped bird against my ribs. High tension stretched between us, thick enough to choke on. I knew my father wasn't bluffing. He had locked me away for days without food before. He had wiped my name from the family registry. To him, my life had zero value.

"I'll put it on," I choked out, staring at the floor.

"Good," my mother sneered. "You have ten minutes. If you try to run, the guards outside will snap your legs. And believe me, Gabriel Vance won't mind if his bride matches his wheelchair."

They slammed the heavy wooden door, locking me in the dark once more.

My hands shook violently as I unzipped the silk wedding gown. It was tailored for Evelyn, smelling faintly of her expensive French perfume. It fit me loosely around the waist, a harsh reminder of how starved I was compared to my pampered twin. I pulled the lace over my bruised shoulders, my mind racing.

Could I escape? The cellar window was barred with thick iron. The door was guarded by my father’s hired thugs. There was no way out. I was being delivered into the jaws of a lion to save the sister who had spent her entire life tormenting me.

Ten minutes later, the door unlocked. My mother marched in, slapped a heavy lace veil over my head, and pinned it so tightly to my hair that it pulled at my scalp. The thick fabric obscured my face completely, hiding the bruise blooming on my cheek.

"Not a word," she hissed in my ear, her nails digging into my upper arm as she dragged me up the stairs. "You walk down that aisle, you sign the certificate, and you go to his estate. If you reveal your identity before the marriage contract is officially filed, I will find you, Clara. And I will make you regret ever being born."

I was pushed into the back of a black limousine with tinted windows. The drive through the city felt like a march to the gallows. Rain lashed against the glass, blurring the neon lights of the metropolis. Every red light felt like a ticking clock countdown to my execution.

When the car finally stopped, the door was pulled open. High-end classical music drifted out from the grand cathedral, mixed with the faint murmurs of hundreds of elite guests.

My father grabbed my elbow, his grip painfully tight. "Keep your head down and march, girl. Don't ruin this for us."

I was led down the long carpeted aisle of the cathedral. Through the hazy veil, I could see hundreds of eyes watching me. Whispers echoed off the high marble ceiling.

*"Look at her... poor girl, marrying that monster..."*

*"I heard Gabriel Vance destroyed his last assistant just for looking at his legs..."*

*"The Montgomerys are brave selling their daughter to a beast."*

They thought I was Evelyn. They felt pity for the golden child, completely unaware that the girl walking toward the altar was the unwanted shadow.

At the front of the altar stood a massive electric wheelchair.

Sitting in it was a man built like a fortress. Even sitting down, Gabriel Vance radiated a suffocating, lethal authority. He wore a tailored dark charcoal suit, his broad shoulders practically bursting through the fabric. His jawline was sharp enough to cut glass, but the left side of his throat bore a faint, jagged scar sliding beneath his collar.

And then there were his eyes.

Cold, piercing, grey as a winter storm.

As I reached the foot of the altar, my father practically shoved me into position before backing away frantically, desperate to distance himself from the man in the chair.

I stood there, trembling beneath the lace, my heart hammering against my chest so hard I thought it would burst.

Gabriel Vance didn't look at the priest. He didn't look at the crowd.

His icy gaze locked directly onto me.

Slowly, deliberately, he raised a gloved hand. He reached out, his long fingers catching the hem of my heavy veil.

"Wait—" I gasped in a tiny, panicked whisper.

Before I could pull back, Gabriel yanked the veil completely off my head, exposing my face, my trembling lips, and the dark, angry purple bruise on my cheek to the entire cathedral.

Gasps echoed through the audience.

Gabriel leaned forward in his wheelchair, his storm-grey eyes narrowing into lethal slits as he looked at my face. He didn't see Evelyn’s pristine, flawless beauty. He saw me.

"You're not Evelyn," Gabriel’s voice ripped through the quiet church, deep, gravelly, and terrifyingly calm.

The air in the cathedral instantly turned to ice. My parents froze in the front row, their faces turning chalk white.

Gabriel lowered his hand, his eyes burning into mine with an intensity that made it impossible to breathe.

"Who the hell are you?" he demanded.

I couldn’t get what Gabriel had told me last night out of my mind, but I couldn’t stay cooped up in this room any longer. The silence was already driving me crazy. With Gabriel busy in meetings downstairs, I decided to explore the quiet corners of the East Wing.I kept to the main hall, remembering Mrs. Gable’s warning about the guards, but my feet naturally carried me past the grand bedrooms toward a narrow, dark hallway I hadn't noticed before. At the very end of the corridor stood a plain wooden door. It looked older than the rest, tucked behind a heavy red velvet curtain.Curiosity got the better of me. I looked over my shoulder to make sure the hall was empty, then reached out and gently pushed the door. To my surprise, it gave way with a tiny, soft creak, revealing a dimly lit room filled with covered furniture, old paintings, and tall mirrors.I took a small step closer, peering through the crack. In the center of the dusty room, past the tall mirrors, stood the tall shadow of

The clock in the main hall struck eleven times, its heavy chiming ringing out through the quiet mansion. I was sitting on the edge of my bed, brushing my hair, when a soft knock came at my bedroom door.Luke stood in the hallway, looking as tall and serious as ever."Mrs. Vance," he said, his tone dry and professional. "Mr. Vance wants to see you in his private room immediately."My stomach fluttered nervously. "In his room?""Yes."What? Gabriel wants to see me in his room? I had never been to his room before, and now he was asking me to come there this late at night. What could he possibly want?Is it what I'm thinking?I pulled my nightgown tighter around myself.Does he want to do what he couldn't do on our wedding night?Different thoughts crossed my mind, each one making me more nervous.No. It can't be.I immediately shook the thought out of my head.I set my hairbrush down and pulled a thick silk robe over my thin nightgown, tying the sash tightly around my waist. I followed

Evelyn didn't just lean close; she actually reached down, trying to slide her hand over his arm, stepping closer to his wheelchair as if she already owned the place. She made a move toward the doors leading inside, clearly planning to push her way past him and into his private wing."Let's go inside, Gabriel," she purred, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. "It's so cold out here, and we have so much catching up to do..."She didn't get past his footrest. In one blinding, violent motion, Gabriel’s large hand shot out and gripped her wrist. He didn't just stop her—he squeezed.Evelyn let out a sharp, pathetic shriek, her fake smile shattering instantly. "Gabriel! You're hurting me!""You touch me again," Gabriel rasped, his voice dropping into a dark tone that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up, "and I will break every finger on this hand."He shoved her back so hard she stumbled on her high heels, nearly falling flat on the cold marble of the portico. The dark, terrify

The morning papers came early, carrying a giant headline across the front page: *Montgomery Debt Relief Revoked: Financial Ruin Looms.*I sat by the window in Gabriel’s study, holding a heavy cardboard box of old filing folders, staring down at the ink on the newsprint. The report didn't hold back. It laid out my father’s total failure, explaining how his business was crumbling by the hour without Gabriel’s money to save it. My mother and father were desperate. They were drowning, and they knew it.Across the desk, Gabriel didn't even look up from his computer screen. His fingers moved fast over the keyboard, dark eyes focused, completely unbothered by the chaos he had unleashed on my family. He looked like an untouchable king sitting in his high fortress, ignoring the storm down below. Then, the heavy black telephone on his desk rang.Gabriel tapped a button on the speaker, his rough voice cool and clipped. "Talk to me, Luke.""Boss, we have a visitor at the front gate," Luke’s voi

I woke up the next morning with a jolt, my hand instinctively flying to my bruised cheek before the reality of where I was settled back into my mind. I was no longer in the damp, moldy cellar beneath the Montgomery estate. I was in the Vance mansion.A faint knock echoed against the heavy mahogany doors before they swung open.Mrs. Gable entered, pushing a gleaming silver trolley filled with all kinds of food. Golden-brown pastries, poached eggs, fresh berries, smoked salmon, and a ceramic pot of steaming coffee filled the air with a rich, dizzying aroma."Good morning, Mrs. Vance," Mrs. Gable said crisply, setting a pristine white napkin across my lap as I sat up in the vast velvet bed. "Mr. Vance instructed that you are to finish your breakfast before leaving this room."I stared at the spread, my stomach twisting into a tight, aching knot. The food smelled heavenly, but looking at such abundance made me nauseous. For eighteen years, my meals had consisted of dry, old bread, cold s

"Get back in your room, Clara! Look away!"The words tore from his throat with such raw, jagged fury that the thick glass along the corridor seemed to hum with the vibration.Gabriel’s knuckles split open against the white marble as he struck the floor a second time. The metallic tang of fresh blood cut through the heavy air, mixing instantly with the rich, sharp scents of cedar and damp rain still clinging to his skin. He didn't look like a king in that moment; he looked like a wounded beast backed into a corner, ready to tear apart anything that dared witness his weakness.I didn't step back. For eighteen years, I had learned the exact nature of human cruelty. I knew the sharp, cold violence of my mother’s slaps and the quiet, starving neglect of my father’s cellars. But this wasn't the cruelty of a tyrant. This was the violent, agonizing thrashing of a man trapped inside a broken frame.I took a step into the hallway, my bare feet sinking into the icy cold of the marble where the h
