Rhythmic bass pumped through the house, echoing from the speakers downstairs. It had silenced their subdued footsteps as they padded up the staircase, slinking away into the darkness of the bedroom. As entwined bodies manoeuvred toward the bed, clothes dispersing on their travel, the loud thump of Hazel’s hip hitting the bedpost brought the fieriness of their kiss to a halt. She winced, gazing up at Cole with watery eyes, his wide hand smothering his deep laugh.

“You sure you’re not drunk again?” he murmured, damp lips brushing the shell of her ear.

“Positive,” Hazel replied. “I wouldn’t dream of drinking after you rejected me yesterday.”

“I didn’t reject you,” Cole scoffed, head shaking at the absurdity of her comment. “I just didn’t want to fuck you while you were clearly intoxicated.” Hazel’s mouth opened, a smart retort dancing on glossy pink lips, but Cole’s hands grasping her rear and lifting her off the ground silenced whatever thought lingered. He let her fall against the mattress, the springs creaking beneath the weight of their bodies. His face hovered mere millimetres above hers, breath hot against her reddened cheeks. Brushing away the hair from her eyes, he grinned, pearlescent teeth glinting in the dull lights of his bedroom. “I wanted to make sure you remembered this.”

Shivers erupted across olive skin, punctuating the spaces between her freckles. Cole’s mouth found hers, his tongue slipping between the seam of her lips as his hand worked to pop open the button of her jeans.

Hazel’s hands curled around the nape of his neck. Her fingers tugged through the short hairs at the base of his skull, a deep groan echoing in his throat. The warmed skin of his shirtless torso spread across her bare skin, her t-shirt discarded somewhere by the bedroom door. Cole’s mouth shifted, drawing wet lines with his tongue against her jaw, her neck, her collarbone, before his fingers wrenched down the white lace of her bra, the supple flesh of her breast spilling from the cup. Cole groaned, his tongue rolling around the pink bud, sending Hazel’s back arching.

“What if…” she panted. The agonizingly slow twirl of his tongue around her nipple tortured her as his hand skimmed across her stomach, dipping down to the matching white lace of her panties.

“Fuck,” he growled, the vibration thick against her taut skin. “You’re so fucking wet, Haze.”

Hazel’s eyes closed, head pressing into the pillow as his fingers followed the intricate lines of her core. “What if Will comes in?”

Dark brown eyes snapped up, his lips pulling together in a tight line as he weighed out the severity of her question. The stillness felt excruciating. She had wanted Cole for as long as she could remember, but he was too old, too reasonable to mess around with her. Now, he was so damn close, all the ways in which it was wrong didn’t matter to her anymore. She lifted her hips, the scrape of his fingers against her clit making her gasp. In that moment, his mind had been made up.

“You’re leaving in a week, Hazel,” he whispered huskily, taking a moment to suck the swollen nipple. Chocolate brown eyes gazed up at her, now blacker than she’d ever seen them, as a small smile tugged at the corners of his lips. “There aren’t consequences anymore.”

Calloused fingers, formed through years of hard work, tore down her jeans, panties joining them in a discarded heap on the floor. Hazel’s hips lifted in a desperate scramble, Cole’s tongue continuing to move between one breast and the other. Detaching himself from her temporarily, he yanked off his own jeans, hastily opening the condom from his pocket and rolling it along his engorged length – as if reality could walk in and slap them in the face at any moment. Positioning himself between her thighs, he pressed himself against the slick folds, allowing just the tip to enter. Hazel gasped, eyes rolling back as she cinched her lower lip between her teeth. Cole’s eyes shifted, drifting between the glazed fieriness in her eyes to the reddened gloss of her lips. “You’re leaving, Hazel, and I don’t have to pretend I don’t want this anymore.”

His lips collided with hers, forceful and fierce, years of longing and desire unleashing as their bodies melted together and his hips sunk into the warmth of her, filling her in the way she’d only dreamed of for so long.

The conversation about the bonfire had gone exactly as Hazel had expected. Max dug his heels in, rattling off a laundry list of reasons he shouldn’t have to attend – he’d be too tired from work, the boys would want to play video games with him, the smoke from the fire would make his clothes and hair stink, the bugs would drive him crazy, the smoke would make Blue’s fur smell and give them extra work to do on Saturday. Hazel had rolled her eyes, remaining silent. There was no point arguing. As Friday afternoon rolled around, her stomach twisted, Max’s irritation at topic of the night hanging heavy in the air. Standing in the bedroom, she sucked in a deep breath, tugging an oversized sweater over her head and making some small adjustments to her hair. Slipping on her boots, she opened the bedroom door, breath baited as she braced herself for Max’s reaction. His arm slung over the back of the sofa, his hand running through his floppy waves. He glanced at her from his peripheral, quickly

The screen door creaked, the clomp of heavy boots against the wood floors echoed through the still kitchen. Hazel set down the iron, hanging up Max’s work shirt on the rack beside her before taking one of the brown bags he had stacked in his arms. She sat it on the countertop, beginning to unpack the night’s dinner necessities. Max swept around, kissing the side of her head before sinking down into a dining chair to take off his boots.“Thanks for stopping in on the way home,” Hazel smiled, desperate to break the silence that lingered. She knew he hadn’t been happy to make the stop, even less so when he suggested getting groceries delivered and she reminded him that wasn’t a thing here. “I thought I’d have more time this afternoon, but there was so much prep to do before I start work and then cleaning out the chicken coop took a lot longer than I expected. I don’t remember it taking my dad that long.” She laughed awkwardly, watching Max rise from the table, lean muscles tensing sligh

Stepping out onto the porch, the mug warm in her palms, Hazel couldn’t help but scan the pastures behind the old farmhouse. The shop came into view, a string of beat up motorcycles littered the entrance, an old car protruding from the garage, its hood open as a slew of tools lay discarded around it.Lou’s warm natter drifted dully through the haze of Hazel’s heartbeat. She took her seat in one of the Adirondack chairs, nodding politely where she felt it appropriate to, but the words weren’t registering, not fully. Instead, they floated around her, background noise, as the broad physique of Cole stepped out from the darkness of the workshop. He was taller than Hazel remembered, more rugged, as if he’d lived an entire life while she was absent. Tattoos adorned the skin of his arms, disappearing beneath the tight sleeves of his black shirt. It was snug around his shoulders, his chest, his muscles rippling beneath the fabric as he stooped down to retrieve the tennis ball from Blue’s clamp

Glancing over her shoulder, Hazel caught sight of the woman shuffling up the drive, floral cotton dress flapping behind her as she wiped her hands on her apron. There was already an abundance of flour dusting the faded pink fabric. Gray-speckled hair was tacked into a low bun, strands of brown falling around the weathered skin of her face. Crinkled coffee eyes squinted in her direction as she continued her path across the gravel.“Hello to you too, Lou,” Hazel laughed, moving to meet the woman halfway.Lou Callahan was shorter than Hazel remembered, softer around the edges now with her sun-kissed skin looking tired and worn. She held her hands on her hips, a plaid tea towel scrunched in her dusty palm. Something deep inside Hazel’s chest twinged, the subtle reminder of the age her mother never grew to be. She swallowed it down though as Lou wrapped her stocky arms around Hazel’s middle, squeezing tightly.“Your dad’s been talkin’ of you comin’ back for months,” she chuckled, wiping th

Hazel awoke with a start, mouth dry as she sat up, scanning herself for any evidence of what had just happened. The valley between her breasts was dewy, sweat leaching from her skin as she struggled to regain her breath. Sunlight spilled in from the open window, a gentle breeze blowing against butter yellow curtains. The realization of where she was hit her hard, her gaze shifting to the empty space beside her in bed. She allowed her eyes to close, her back resting against the headboard as she took a moment to process.A week. She’d been back in town for less than a week and the dreams had been relentless. Swallowing the hard lump in her throat, she tossed the sheets aside, feeling the fabric cling to the dampness between her inner thighs. Grasping her robe from the back of the bedroom door, she slid the silk across her body and creaked open the door. The scrape of a knife and fork on a plate rang out from the kitchen, the only sound filling the eerily quiet house. In Manhattan, the h
