Chapter 1

Inside the study, Luca was still complaining quietly.

“She can’t do anything. She can’t even hit a stationary target anymore. I don’t want a useless person like that to be my mother.”

I bit my lip hard, my chest trembling with pain.

I never thought that one day, the son I fought so hard to give birth to would dislike me this much.

Damien sighed softly.

“Your mother loves this family very much, and she loves you too. There’s already very little she can still have, so at the very least, I should leave the position of Mrs. Newman to her.”

“What if she finds out the truth?”

“She won’t,” Damien answered firmly. “She treasures this family too much. As long as you still call her Mom, she’ll choose to trust me again and again.”

I turned around, wanting to leave, but accidentally walked into the collection room he had forbidden me to approach.

There was nothing else in the room except an entire wall of firearms.

The antique pistol that originally belonged to me was gone.

In its place was a stack of property transfer documents, all with Violetta listed as the beneficiary.

There was also an auction house insurance policy stating that the antique pistol had been kept in a private overseas estate for the past five years.

And the owner of that estate was Violetta’s current identity.

I flipped through another stack of photographs.

Birthdays, the first snowfall, family anniversaries…

Every month, on the days when the two of them mysteriously disappeared, they had actually been spending time with Violetta.

In the photos, she wore a burgundy riding outfit and held the pistol that should have belonged to me while standing beside Damien, smiling brightly and proudly.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten sentence: [A gun worth collecting should be given to the person most suited for it.]

No tears fell, but my heart felt like it had been torn open alive.

It had been two lifetimes, yet I still mistook salvation for love.

Ever since I was little, my parents treated me as a tool for the Capello family’s alliances and inheritance. They demanded that I be precise, calm, and flawless.

I always thought that as long as I had one real home that belonged to me, it would be enough.

In my previous life, I died in the conspiracy Leon and Violetta created together.

At the time, Damien stood before my grave with reddened eyes while settling scores with Leon for me, and I mistakenly believed that he loved me.

In the end, he had pushed me from one abyss into a quieter one.

Damien, this is where we end.

Freya had tactfully left the front hall to us.She even left only a single light on.The warm yellow glow fell over Damien, making the exhaustion in his eyes impossible to hide.He didn’t try to hug me the moment he arrived like he used to, nor did he put on the composed and steady posture of a don.He simply stood there and spoke in a low voice.“I know you won’t forgive me.“I didn’t come here today to beg you to return with me immediately.”As he spoke, he held a long black wooden box in his hand.I recognized it.The antique pistol had originally been stored in that box.“Elena, I don’t want to lie to you anymore.“I knew everything about your hand injury from beginning to end.“I knew Violetta wanted that gun and that she attacked you. And I was the one who later had the doctors delay the treatment window and change the treatment plan.”Damien swallowed hard, his voice rough with difficulty.“At the time, I thought that as long as you stayed in the Newman family and

It was on a snowy morning that I officially stood in front of the display cases and gave a presentation to visitors for the first time. There weren’t many people at the gallery that day. Most of them were collectors interested in antique weapons, along with a few students visiting with their teacher.I wore a dark gray suit, my right hand still secured with a wrist brace. Holding the presentation board in my left hand, I slowly introduced several ceremonial pistols, revolvers, and family commemorative firearms preserved from the nineteenth century.Halfway through the presentation, a little boy with curly hair suddenly raised his hand.“Hi, did you used to shoot guns too?”The room fell quiet.Everyone was waiting for my answer.I looked at his bright eyes, paused for two seconds, and then calmly nodded.“Yes.“And I used to be very good at it.”The little boy blinked and asked again, “Then why don’t you do it anymore?”Freya stood nearby, as if worried I might feel embarra

Winter in Sicilia was never particularly cold. However, that night, as Damien stood in the empty bedroom, he felt the estate was as cold as a tomb. After I left, he never returned to the master bedroom again. He had people leave my perfume, shawls, and the old lamp beside the table exactly where they had always been, as if keeping everything unchanged would somehow make me walk back through the door one night. But nothing happened for seven days. The secretary delivered every piece of information they could uncover to his desk.Airport surveillance, hotel registrations, flight transfer lists, even lawyer correspondence. However, every clue only confirmed that I had truly left, while never allowing him to catch up to where I actually was.On the eighth day, Luca came down with a fever. The child lay in bed, clutching the wooden gun model, and refused to let go. Even while half-conscious from the fever, he kept calling for his mom.Damien sat beside the bed and stayed awake the

The snow in Turicum was much quieter than in Sicilia. When the plane landed, I sat by the window and looked at the stretch of gray-white at the end of the runway. For the first time, I suddenly felt alive again.I took off my wedding ring and threw it into the airport restroom trash bin. Then I carried a single suitcase and walked out alone.I didn’t go to any relatives or contact any old acquaintances.Instead, I moved into a very small apartment in the southern part of the city. The place only had two rooms. The windowsill was narrow, and the kitchen was small. Compared to the Newman estate, it looked shabby, like a completely different world. However, on the first night I slept there, I slept more peacefully than I had in the past five years. The next day, I went to the hand clinic I had already scheduled. The doctor removed the brace and examined me again before finally telling me with regret that the old injury in my right wrist had been delayed for too long. Although the

Damien’s hand shook so violently that he almost failed to hold on to the documents.A folded note slipped out from inside, and he practically lunged forward to pick it up.There was only one short sentence written on it.[So long, Damien.]Those few words struck his chest like a heavy blow.He stood there motionless as the color gradually drained from his face and his breathing turned unsteady. When Luca saw the documents in his hands, he slowly realized what they meant, and his eyes instantly turned red.“Dad, did Mom abandon us?”The child asked in a trembling voice, as if waiting for him to deny it.Though Damien opened his mouth, he still couldn’t force out a complete sentence. He desperately kept calling my phone, but all he heard was the automated message saying the phone was powered off.He ordered people to search the entire estate from top to bottom. It was only then that he discovered that everything that truly belonged to me had already been removed beforehand.B

As I struggled to push myself back up, I saw Damien rush forward and pull Violetta into his arms. She covered her cheek, tears falling at just the right moment.“Damien, I only wanted to apologize to her…“I know she hates me. After all, I was the reason her hand was injured. But I really didn’t do it on purpose…”Damien frowned as he turned back to look at me, the dissatisfaction in his eyes impossible to hide.“Elena, what happened five years ago is already in the past. She’s already paid the price for it. What you did today was completely out of line.”I looked at him and suddenly laughed.Even I was startled by how cold that smile felt.“Did she really pay the price?“Damien, was it fun lying to me?”His expression stiffened. Clearly, he hadn’t expected me to expose everything so directly.“Elena, I can explain—”However, before he could finish speaking, Violetta suddenly gasped in pain in his arms.“My foot hurts so much… Could it be broken?”Damien lowered his head
