Chapter 8

Author: Crystal K
"A duel it is."

Salome's voice was disturbingly calm.

He didn't draw a weapon.

He didn't even take a fighting stance.

"Aren't you going to draw your sword?" Lukas sneered. "Or is the half-breed too scared..."

Before he could finish, Salome's form began to change.

But this was no mere werewolf's shift. This was an evolution.

His body grew taller, his muscles becoming more defined, but he kept a human-like shape.

His fingernails lengthened into black claws, his canines sharpened, and a dark fire lit up his eyes.

The air around him crackled with a power that was neither human nor wolf.

It was something more.

"What... what is he?" someone whispered in terror.

Black mist rose from Salome's body, forming a sphere of shadow around him.

When Lukas's pureblood Alpha aura touched the shadows, it didn't just stop; it dissolved, melting away like snow in a fire.

"Impossible!" Lukas gasped, shocked. "How can a half-breed suppress pureblood power?!"

"Because I was never just a half-breed," Salom

"You remember our past life, too?"I looked at the complex runes on Salome's back, a powerful premonition rising in me."More than just remember," he said, pulling his shirt back on. "I changed it.""What do you mean?""Kristina, do you know how you really died?" His voice was soft, but every word struck my heart like a hammer. The memories flooded back. The cold cave, the silver blade, Lukas's icy eyes..."Lukas sacrificed me.""Yes." Salome walked to the window, gazing at the night sky. "To save a dying Lyla, he sacrificed you to an ancient god of the Abyss.""How do you know this?""Because I was there," his voice grew deeper, haunted. "I brought my army to save you, but I was too late."The blood in my veins ran cold."I watched you die in that cave. I watched your blood stain the altar," he turned, his eyes filled with a pain that was centuries old. "In that moment, for the first time, my human blood became an advantage.""What?""Purebloods can only make pacts with the Moon Godde

"You bitch!"Lukas's roar echoed from across the citadel.Salome and I were at the altar, awaiting the ceremony, when the shout erupted."What happened?" I asked.A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched Salome's lips. "The truth always travels faster than lies."Not far away, Lukas was dragging Lyla by the arm, striding toward us. Her face was streaked with tears, her fine dress torn at the hem."Lukas, you're hurting me..." Lyla cried."Hurting you?" Lukas shoved her away. She fell hard to the ground. "Do you even know what pain is?"He pulled a black book from his coat. The book of secrets."Tell me," he snarled, "who is Talik?"Lyla's face went white. "I... I don't know what you're talking about...""You don't?" Lukas flipped open the book and read aloud, his voice booming. "'Talik: a goblin slave. Four feet tall, green skin. Personal servant to the Silvermoon bastard, Lyla. Source confirms: he is the true father of her unborn child.'"A wave of horrified gasps swept through the

Three days later, my father miraculously woke up."Such a potent healing spell," the healer said, his voice filled with awe. "I've never seen such a swift recovery."Father sat up in bed, his color returning. Lukas's healer was skilled, but I knew the real reason for the recovery: the alchemical potions Salome had sent."Daughter," Father took my hand. "How are the preparations for the ceremony?""It begins this afternoon," I said, looking out the window. "Salome has arranged everything.""Can he truly be trusted?" Father's eyes still held a shadow of worry. "His identity...""Father," I interrupted gently. "Do you trust me?"He looked at me for a long moment, then finally nodded. "You are my daughter, my heir. I trust your choice."The Blood Moon Mating ceremony was set for sunset. In my room, I changed into the white gown my mother had left me, embroidered with moons and wolves. The reflection in the mirror was a stranger. I had worn this same dress to mate with Lukas in my past l

The sight outside the city gates made everyone gasp.Through the window, I saw an army unlike any I had ever known. The front rank was human infantry in black, full-plate armor, standing in a perfect, ghostly formation. Their armor was carved with complex runes that pulsed with a strange glow.In the middle were scouts mounted on massive shadow wolves, creatures larger than any transformed werewolf, their eyes burning with red fire. The riders had strange tattoos on their faces, their half-wolf, half-human features stark and proud.Behind them marched creatures I'd only ever read about in forbidden texts: winged humanoids, scaled beast-men, and figures so shrouded in shadow-black cloaks they were nothing but shapes."What... what kind of army is this?" a soldier stammered."A rabble of mongrels and exiles," Lukas sneered, but I saw his hand drift toward the hilt of his sword. "They only know how to put on a show.""Kristina, how much did you pay for these mercenaries?" Lyla mocked, h

A full day after my father collapsed, Lyla paraded through the citadel's corridors."Kristina, don't I look beautiful?"She wore a deep red gown studded with pearls—the mark of a Redfang Luna. The crown on her head glittered in the sun. It was my mother's."You're wearing my mother's crown.""It's mine now." She touched the ruby on the crown. "Lukas said that as the new Luna of the Silvermoon Citadel, I should wear the proper accessories."A dozen soldiers in Redfang uniforms followed her, patrolling my home as if it were their own."How is your father?" Lukas rounded the corner, his tone as casual as if asking about the weather."Still unconscious.""A pity," he said, shaking his head. "If he'd woken up sooner, he could have witnessed the new and improved Silvermoon Citadel."I watched them strut down the halls of my home, a fire of helpless rage burning in my chest."Kristina," Lyla said, walking up to me. She waved the soldiers away, then leaned in close."You should get on your kn
