“What?” I stared at Mikey in disbelief. “Jason is dead?”

Mikey’s face was pale, his voice low. “Yes. Apparently… for a while now. They found his body this morning. He’s been gone for five days.”

My hand flew to my mouth. The room tilted, sound fading into a distant hum. “Five days?” I whispered. “That can’t be right. He—he promised to report back.”

I had been wondering why there’d been no word, no message. But dead? My chest tightened painfully.
