Leon

The healers were rushed down by my beta and we all watched in silence as they went through different jars, applying their contents on Mother who looked very pale and still very much unconscious.

The tension in the room was as loud as carnival drums, we could almost hear the thunder that was pounding inside of our skulls.

Mother was not breathing steadily, her chest was not rising up and down, rising and sinking rhythmically like it was supposed to.

The air around me thickened with dread.

I wanted to yell, scream at something, someone.

I clenched my fists tightly and my knuckles turned white.

My fingers dug deep into my palms, drawing blood.

I was trying desperately hard to push away what I just saw, but it wouldn't budge no matter how hard I tried.

Why?

Why would she do this?

Was it because of what I said?

The healer asked us to leave the room while she attended to Mother. After unbearable hours, one of the healers came out, her wild hair looking wilder and more crazed. She sla

LeonFor two weeks, we all took turns looking after Mother. The healer’s presence was now a normal thing in the house. She would go from applying different lotions on her to chanting different incantations over her, trying different charms or enchantments that might make her recover faster. We didn’t know how to deal with the fact that she could do so much without asking us to help, but there were no real problems for us, and none of us complained. Today, she was burning dry herbs at her bedside. The smell was awful – I could tell by her expression that it was bothering her – but it wasn’t hurting her, so we tried to ignore it as best we could while she chanted. At some point, her lips moved more than usual, and then her entire body shook like she was having an epileptic fit. That was what we thought anyway, because it seemed unlikely that anyone else could see what was going on, we all knew it was part of her routine. But today, Mother’s hands started flailing. Her eyes rolled backw

LeonI summoned the elders as soon as possible while the healers came to attend to Mother again. There was still no sign of improvement in her condition, and she didn’t even wake up. The healers were keeping her in an induced coma until we could find out more. I wanted to be there when they found out, since I had a feeling about this. She needed to wake up before they discovered whatever it was that was happening to her. And I didn't want my mother alone at that time, not after everything she's been through. She needed to tell me, tell us who did this to her.Edna had not spoken to me and I could tell she was still mad at me for what happened yesterday. We were avoiding each other. After what had happened between me and Edna I felt uncomfortable with her being around me. Her anger never bothered me like this, it had never. Maybe it was because she was right after all, maybe Mother was truly lying on that bed because of me. If I had listened to her and had not pushed her away, maybe

Ava “You are with child” Madam Rosalie peered into my face curiously before she let her gaze fall to my stomach, she held a mixture of pity and disgust. “I am not” I denied immediately. She gave me a disbelieving look, “I saw what you did, it was disgusting” “What do you mean?” I questioned, my voice coming out slightly choked. “You are with child” She stated again , this time her tone holding more weight, as if there was something other than pity that she had seen. “I am not ma, please” I lied but the look in her eyes told me she knew I was lying. “Just please don’t say anything” I pleaded. “You filthy girl! Were you trying to deceive us all? Come with me” She tried to yank my hand but I pulled away from her grip. “Please Madam Rosalie, please” I begged, “I have been working hard and I know my place, I am not expecting any special treatment, please help me keep this a secret” Her expression shifted to anger at this plea. “If you don’t come with me willingly then m

AvaThe morning sickness became a daily routine. Today, I snuck out when the other slave girls were not watching to empty my stomach in the bushes. It wasn't very ladylike and it certainly wasn’t smart – but no one noticed me leaving the slave house or even questioning where I had been going. I gagged as my throat burned, my eyes watering with every retch I made, I bent over and threw up again. I tried not to think about who would hear and or see.I just had to be fast about it. When I was done, I straightened up immediately and when I turned to leave, I saw him standing near a stump, staring at me with unblinking eyes. My heart skipped a beat. That’s impossible - my eyes widened. My feet refused to move. I had managed to be caught by their leader.“Ava” His voice was firm , authoritative. His face looked calm and collected, almost as if he weren't looking at someone trying to hide whatever she had going on.I swallowed hard. No way of getting out of this without revealing everythin

LeonIt had been weeks and I was yet to know what my fate was by the council. I saw Mother when I was asleep, no, I saw her eyes. They were scared and it stirred something inside of me, a feeling that made me feel sick to my stomach.I woke up and I couldn't get the image out of my head. So I gently pushed my duvet away. My heart pounded like mad against my rib cage and sweat trickled down my back. There was some kind of nightmare or vision playing in my mind. I left the room and walked through the hallway down towards Mother's room. Her bed was well laid and it didn't look like someone had slept on it There was no sign of the blankets being twisted or anything like that, the room seemed perfectly neat. The lights on the side table were turned off and everything else seemed normal.I moved to the gardens and everywhere else I could think of that might have roofed her but I found nothing. Her scent was still in the air but barely, it was faint - weak as a pulse.Nothing.The naggi
