Selene’s POV

The walk home felt longer than it should have. Rachel kept stealing glances at me, and I knew what was coming before her lips even parted.

“So,” she began carefully, “are you going to tell me who she was? That woman?”

I didn’t answer immediately. My fingers were cold, even though the afternoon sun still lingered on the street.

“Selene,” Rachel pressed, matching her pace to meet mine. “Was she someone from you know before?”

Before. That word held too much. Before the scars. Before I remembered what it meant to fight for air in your own life, in your own home.

“She was...a friend,” I said eventually.

Rachel frowned. “A friend who looked like she wanted to eat you alive and then hug you at the same time?”

I gave a dry laugh. “You’re not far off.”

We passed the corner florist, the scent of lavender and soil rushing out toward us. A delivery van rumbled by, honking once as it dodged a cyclist.

“She was involved with my Ex-husband,” I finally said, watching a pair of

Selene's POV The knock barely registered before the door creaked open, slow and deliberate, like the world knew I didn’t need another surprise, but was offering me one anyway. And then there he was. Emiliano Vieri. He stood framed in the doorway like some living contradiction charming and out of place, yet somehow blending perfectly into the chaos that was my life lately. His dark hair was tousled, his gray coat casually thrown over a crisp shirt, collar slightly upturned from the breeze. But it was his eyes steel and unflinching that held me in place. My lips parted slightly. “What—! How... how did you know where I live?” He didn’t look guilty. If anything, he looked amused. “I didn’t,” he said with a low chuckle, stepping inside and closing the door behind him. “I live in the estate across the block. I was just on my way back from the grocer’s when I saw you and your friend walking in this direction. Didn’t know it was your place.” My brain scrambled for logic. Coincid

Selene’s POV“Rachel I can't tell anything for now,” I said as we rounded the next block, “you don’t have to worry. Everything will be fine.”It felt like a lie, because it was. Nothing ever really stayed fine in my world. But sometimes, when your friend looks at you with fear swimming behind her eyes, you have to lie beautifully. She smiled faintly, nodding. “Okay. I trust you.”I didn’t trust myself. We stopped in front of a small bakery, its window fogged slightly from the warmth inside. It smelled like cinnamon buns and almond tarts and soft crusted loaves, and for a moment, it was easy to pretend we were just two normal girls. Just two women on a stroll, browsing for sweets, not caught in the orbit of cold-eyed men.Rachel pushed the door open, the bell above tinkling softly, and we stepped inside. Then my blood turned cold. There, standing by the display case like she belonged in my memory and not this reality, was Lina.Lina.My ex-best friend. My ex-husband’s mistress. His con

Selene's POV My next words fell like bricks. “He’s Dominic’s personal bodyguard. His right hand man, he's been for years.” "I can't believe it, you mean Enzo?" she murmured, her voice barely audible. "Enzo... Dominic's right-hand man Sel?." I looked up, meeting her eyes. "You had no idea?" She shook her head, her expression a mix of shock and confusion. "I just thought he was some mysterious guy I met, he was always so reserved, but there was something about him I can't place my hands on... Rachel went white. “What?” I nodded slowly, leaning back into myself. “He's always around Dominic, his tight man. Yesterday too, he’s always close but never speaks unless he has to. Completely loyal. The kind of man who could kill a person with a single command from his boss.” She sank beside me. “You’re joking.” “I am not Rachel.” Rachel went quiet, staring at her hand like it had betrayed her. “He didn’t seem like... that.” “They never do trust me, I don't even want you to get

Selene's POVYou didn’t tell me you’d be working with Emiliano Vieri."Dominic’s voice cut through the cabin like a wire, cold and controlled.I leaned back, gripping the smoothie in my hand tighter. “That’s because I’m not.”His gaze didn’t waver. “He offered you a card, you took it, I watched it happen.”Rachel shifted beside me, clearly trying not to draw attention to herself. The silence between us thickened, stretching too long, and I finally looked him in the eye.“And I didn’t accept his offer.”Dominic’s jaw flexed once. He didn’t blink. “Good.”Then came the shift, the one I hated. He tilted his head slightly, his eyes like a sharp knife, pressing in.on me. “But we still need to talk about the deal. The marriage.”Rachel’s sharp inhale was loud in the cabin. “Wait—what?”I didn’t look at her. My eyes stayed on him. “My answer hasn’t changed, Dominic.”He paused. A slow blink from him, maybe wondering my firmness on my decision.“Still no,” I added. “Even if your father’s brea

Selene’s POV I didn’t have time to process much. I threw on my black jeans, a clean blouse, and a soft cream blazer. No makeup. Not a single stroke. I didn’t care how I looked. I just needed air and maybe a sense that my life was mine again. The car that picked us up was already waiting at the corner. Rachel stayed close, practically glued to my side as if she thought I might disappear again. I didn’t have the heart to tell her I felt exactly the same. By the time we arrived at the media house, I wasn’t ready for what waited. The second I stepped out of the car, the chaos hit me.There was flashing lights, shouts and journalists. A crowd of cameras and reporters surging forward like they’d been lying in wait just for me. “Selene! Over here!” Rachel said, trying to help me weave in through the crowd. “Are you the official face of the Youth Conference?” “Miss Selene, are you currently in a relationship?” “How does it feel to be a public figure overnight?” “Is it true you had a c
