The smell of herbs and roasted garlic drifted through the air again as the waiter returned with their entrees. He set a steaming plate of linguine pescatore in front of Derek—plump shrimp, scallops, and mussels resting on a bed of pasta tossed in a light tomato broth. In front of Ryleigh, he placed her chicken marsala, smothered in rich mushroom sauce, alongside a generous helping of garlic mashed potatoes.

“Enjoy,” the waiter said with a polite nod before retreating to the back of the restaurant.

Ryleigh inhaled deeply, closing her eyes for a second. “This smells like heaven.”

“Wait until you taste it,” Derek said, already twirling a bite of pasta on his fork.

As she picked up her knife, Ryleigh glanced at him thoughtfully. “Would it be okay if my questions got a little more… personal?”

Derek looked up from his plate, lips tugging into a soft smile. “As long as I get to ask a few in return.”

“Fair,” she replied with a small smile, already feeling a flutter of nervous ener

The streets of the pack town buzzed softly with the quiet life of late afternoon. Sunlight filtered through the trees, casting golden patches across the cobblestone walkways. Ryleigh walked beside Derek, their hands brushing occasionally, sending tiny sparks through her fingertips each time. She couldn’t stop thinking about the check in her pocket—the hundred thousand dollars that had bought her silence. It weighed heavy despite its lightness, like a secret she couldn’t yet bring herself to share. She glanced at Derek, his profile calm and steady as he walked with that easy confidence she found so infuriating—and comforting. She wouldn’t tell him. Not yet. The soft strains of Italian music drifted through the air, growing stronger with each step. They neared a small building tucked neatly between two shops, with an old-fashioned wooden door and a chalkboard sign boasting the daily specials. The scent of garlic, butter, and fresh herbs enveloped Ryleigh the moment they approached th

The dirt path was quiet beneath Ryleigh’s footsteps, the afternoon sun pressing gently against her shoulders as she made her way toward town. The trees whispered overhead, but her mind was too loud to hear them. She kept her purse close, the weight of it unnatural—not because of what was inside, but what it meant. One check. One number. A hundred thousand dollars to keep her mouth shut.It was more money than she’d ever seen in her life. Enough to change everything. But as she walked, a bitter question gnawed at the edge of her thoughts: Was her silence really worth that much? Or maybe... was that all her truth was worth to them? A sum to seal her lips, to erase her story. They called it generosity. She knew it for what it was—a bribe cloaked in civility. She thought about Derek—his kindness, the way his eyes softened when he looked at her. She knew he didn’t know. About the check. About Margaret. About the threat stitched into every syllable she spoke.Should she tell him?The questi

The first pale light of Monday morning spilled softly through the sheer curtains of Ryleigh’s small room, stirring her awake with its gentle insistence. She blinked open her eyes, the familiar quiet of the mansion settling around her like a heavy cloak. Today promised little more than routine—but for Ryleigh, that was a small mercy.Sliding out of bed, she dressed with practiced efficiency, pulling on the modest servant’s clothes she had laid out the night before. The faded gray dress clung lightly to her slender frame, and she smoothed her straight hair back from her face in the mirror, trying to tamp down the unease that simmered just beneath her skin. She had learned to keep her head down, to stay out of trouble, but trouble had a way of finding her nonetheless.By the time she reached the kitchen, the air was already warm with the scent of herbs and baking bread. Natalia was there, humming quietly as she set the table.“Morning, Ryleigh,” Natalia greeted with a smile. “Ready for a

The wind slipped through the trees, cool and damp against Ryleigh’s skin, but she couldn’t feel anything except the tightness in her chest. She wandered far beyond the garden wall, beyond the dining room and its heavy truths. Her legs had carried her without direction, her heart pounding, her breaths shallow and quick. She clutched her arms around herself, trying to slow her spiraling thoughts, but it was like trying to hold back a storm with shaking hands. I’m the daughter of the former Beta. My mother was human. Callum is my half-brother. The thoughts came like waves, crashing over and over, each one sharper than the last. Her knees gave slightly, but she braced herself on the rough trunk of a tree, grounding herself in the bark. She closed her eyes, willing her breathing to slow. It didn’t. Her throat tightened. They hadn’t told her. Her adoptive parents—the ones who raised her, loved her—had died before they could say anything. Before they could explain who she really was.

Derek laced his fingers through Ryleigh’s as they stepped into the quiet dining room. The morning sun poured through the tall windows, casting golden rays across the long table and polished floors. Ryleigh’s heart beat a little faster, not just from the warmth of Derek’s hand but from the strangeness of it all—being here like this, not as a servant, but as… something else. They approached the buffet, a beautiful spread of brunch favorites. Silver trays gleamed with scrambled eggs, thick-cut bacon, golden waffles dusted with powdered sugar, and a steaming pot of creamy herb potatoes. A smaller tray held fresh-cut fruit—berries, sliced peaches, and ripe melon—and beside it, a platter of pastries drizzled with honey.Ryleigh hesitated, fingers tightening slightly around the plate in her hand.“You okay?” Derek asked gently, his thumb brushing against hers. She nodded slowly. “It’s just… weird. I’m usually the one serving this food, not eating it.”Derek gave her a soft smile. “You’re not
