LOGINEVA:
"Are you serious?" I asked Ethan in shock, and he nodded, his lips curled in a smile. "Yeah. How much do you want me to pay you, but you must abide by my rules and work as my secretary only," he said, and I gulped hard. "I haven't been a secretary before. I just graduated with a degree in software engineering, and I want to be a software developer. I applied at Almond Tech, and they offered for me to start work by Monday," I said, and his brows furrowed. "I will pay you 2 million. If you accept, you can come to work in my company by Monday. Failure to show up, then, you lose, as I am in need of a new secretary," he said, and I gulped hard and accepted his card. "Fine. How about the medicine that you want me to take?" I asked, as he had almost forgotten the contraceptive pill in his hands. "Oh, here it is," Ethan gave me the bottle, and I took two pills and gulped them down with the bottle of water that he gave me. "Don't forget. By Monday. If you fail to show up, then I will get a replacement for you. I will be expecting you. What's your name?" Ethan asked, pausing as he turned to walk away from me. Lowering my head and avoiding his green eyes, I replied, "Eva Brooks." "Alright, Eva, I will be looking forward to meeting you again. Take your things and leave. The hotel service will be here to clean the room," after saying that, Ethan turned and walked out of the room. And my eyes fell on the red blood stain on his pristine white bedsheet. Looking at the card in my hand, I shook my head and went to reach for my handbag. I put the card back and took out my phone. I saw four missed calls from my mother. "Hello, Mom," I answered her call, and she yelled at me. "Eva, what did you do to provoke Jacob? He has cancelled his partnership with your father and called off your engagement. How can you cheat on him at a time like this when he is planning to marry you? What came over you?" Mom yelled, and I felt guilty. "Mom, I am sorry. Layla set me up," I tried to explain, but Mom cut me off. "Shut up. Layla didn't set you up. You went to the man and cheated on Jacob. How can you do this to us? We disown you as our daughter. Don't bring your shameful self home to us again," Mom yelled, and before I could explain, the call ended. Shaking my head, I stood in the hotel room and sighed. Gripping my phone tightly, I tried to call Jacob one last time to explain to him that it was all a mistake and I would never cheat on him. However, the phone rang, and Jacob ended it. When I tried to contact him again, I heard, "Sorry, the number you are trying to call doesn't exist." "What?" My brows furrowed upon realizing that Jacob had blocked me. Did five years of our relationship mean nothing to him? I knew that Jacob had always wanted to have sex with me, but I had stopped him and told him we should wait until our marriage. Now, I had cheated. Wiping my sobs away, I wore my bra and panties, before I reached for my green dress and put it on. After that, I wore my black shoes and adjusted my hair, before taking a final glance at the room to ensure that I didn't forget anything. I walked out of the hotel room, while the hotel service waiting went in to clean it. Then I made my way to the elevator and rode down to the lobby. When I walked out, I felt the stares of eyes on me. But no one stopped me. The impressive luxury hotel was filled with people of different calibers entering and going out. Making my way out of the hotel building, I exited the premises, recalling that I wouldn't have come to this hotel if not for Layla's insistence. Hailing a taxi, I went home, even as my mother had warned me not to return home again. I knew that I had no one to go to. Jacob had broken up with me, and I couldn't go to his place. Not just that, my relatives would be furious with me, as it was because of Jacob that my father's small loan company could soar higher. Now that Jacob has withdrawn his support and demanded that I repay him for all the money that he had spent on me, I knew that none of my family members would want to help me at this point. When I arrived home and paid the cab, I walked up nervously to the gate of the bungalow house where my parents live. My father owned this house, as he bought it after Jacob and I started dating. Reaching the gate, I knocked, and the security man pulled the gate open. "Miss Eva, you are not allowed into the house," Tom said, and my brows furrowed. "Why? This is my father's house. I want to see them and explain to them," I begged the security man, Tom, but he shook his head. "Your mother said that if I let you in, then I will lose my job. I don't want to lose my job, madam," he went back into the house and locked the gate on me. "Wait, Tom," I knocked again, but he wouldn't answer me. Sighing, I paced about the gate, thinking of what to do, as I couldn't believe that my family had abandoned me at a time like this. "Was this how people fall from grace to grass?" I tried calling my mother, but the number she used to call me wasn't connecting. Calling my older brother, Cruz, he demanded, "Eva, how could you cheat on Jacob at a time like this when we are looking forward to having you both become married?" "Cruz, I was set up. I didn't mean to cheat on Jacob. Believe me, Layla set me up," I said, and my older brother sighed. "I warned you to stay away from Layla. That girl is a snitch, and you didn't listen to me. She is not from our place, and also, her parents are richer than ours," my brother fumed, and I sobbed. "I am sorry. I should have listened to you," I said, and he sighed. "It's fine. Where are you now? Mom and Dad are angry, and they don't want to see you. Also, Jacob is demanding compensation and saying that you never let him touch you, so you didn't do anything for him in the five years you both dated," Cruz said, sighing in frustration. "Cruz, can I come over to your place?" I asked him, knowing that he had just gotten married. "Hmm. Sure, but you know, Maddison and you don't get along. Don't worry, I will talk to her to understand," Cruz said, and I sighed heavily, feeling relief that I could rely on him. As Layla's betrayal still stung, I couldn't call any of my female friends again. So I went back to the road, hailed another taxi, and went to my older brother's house.EVA'S POV:When I rang the doorbell, my mother came over and pulled the door to unlock it for me from within."Eva, you are back," Mom said, her lips curled up in a smile as she stepped back for me to enter the living room."Yes, Mom. I am back. Good evening," I greeted her, as the smell of fried plantains and fish stew wafted through my nostrils while I walked into the room."Mom, didn't you go to work today?" I asked her, turning to face her as my tummy growled loudly in hunger. My mother was a great chef, and so she prioritized the cooking herself.Smiling, Mom shut the door and turned to face me. She wore a short blue dress that clung to her skin like a second skin. "I did," her voice came out like a gentle caress in my ear. "But I came back home early. Your Dad is back too. We wanted to discuss something with you."My mind raced, wondering if it was about the money from Ethan's Dad.After my mother finished speaking, the sound of my Dad's footsteps striding into the living room a
EVA'S POV:Lily and I stepped out of the elevator with the rest of the staff, and she walked up beside me and said, "I understand, Eva. I just want us to be friends.""I know. Fine. Since you want us to be friends, let's go," I replied, knowing it was not bad to accept a friendly gesture. After all, Lily had been kind to me.Lily giggled and said, "Of course."However, my phone rang, and it was an incoming call from Layla. I declined her call, as I could not believe that she would have the audacity to call me after setting me up."Eva, is anything the matter?" Lily asked, noticing the change in my demeanor when she saw me stop in my tracks."Yes, I'm fine. It's just an old friend of mine who betrayed me, and I'm not ready to talk to her at the moment," I replied, my tone cold, as I swiftly blocked Layla's contact.I had forgotten to block her, being carried away by my new job and sealing a secret deal with the Johnson Group."Oh, you mean the one who set you up at the Owen Hotel? EVA:When I settled into my office chair, I brought out my laptop and began working on the project that I had in mind to present to the Johnson’s group. My mind replayed my encounter with Ethan in his car. His closeness. His confession to having my nude on his phone. How dare he keep such intimate videos of me. Though I had a vague memory, the thought that he had such videos of me made me uncomfortable.“Do not think too much about it, Eva. Maybe Ethan is right. He is a billionaire and he wouldn’t want anyone to blackmail him for his mistakes with me. After all, he has a fiancée,” I mumbled under my breath. My mood improved as I began creating a new app for the Johnson’s group. Just then, the sound of someone knocking on my transparent door startled me.When I raised my head to see who it was, I was surprised to see a tall man, wearing a blue shirt and black trousers, with a pair of polished black shoes, stride into my office.“Hi, you must be Ethan’s new secretary, right?” he asked,
ETHAN:The car ride was silent as Pete drove ahead to my house inside White Estate. My head throbbed with thoughts of Eva, and I needed to take a break from the office to think clearly. Did I make a mistake asking Eva to work for me? Should I not have employed her? When Pete arrived at my mansion, he waited for security to unlock the gate before driving into my residence and parking. “Sir, about the partners from the Johnson group—should I deliver the document to you here or keep it at the company?” Pete asked respectfully as I unfastened my seatbelt to step out of the car. “Take it to the company and keep it there. I will handle everything tomorrow,” I replied calmly. “Alright, sir. Will you be needing anything?” Pete inquired as I unlocked the door to get out. “No. You can return to the company. I will be fine.” I strode ahead toward my mansion, and my phone rang. When I pulled it out of my trousers pocket, I saw it was Freya calling. My brows furrowed, but I answe
(Eva's POV) "What? Eva, three months is too much. Please, let's restart our relationship and get married next month," Jacob begged, but I refused. "No. I do not want next month. The matter is still fresh, so I need it to fade away and calm down. Three months is better. If you cannot wait until then, you can move on. I am not stopping you. I believe three months is enough for a wound to heal," I replied firmly, and Jacob sighed. "Alright. I will be patient," he said. "Okay, take care," I replied and wanted to end the call, but Jacob's deep voice reverberated through the speaker, "Eva, I wanted to ask you if you have ever tried to ask Ethan for the CCTV video of that night—at least to know who the man was that you slept with." "No. I cannot ask my boss," I swiftly declined. My heart slammed hard against my chest as it felt like the walls were pressing in on me. "Why? Ethan is the owner of Owen's Hotel, so he will have access to it. Unless you want me to believe that Ethan is the ma
(Eva's POV)"Um, sir. I want to ask about my nude video that you have on your phone," I asked him, and he laughed aloud firmly. His face relaxed a bit as he smirked."Why are you asking me about it? I thought you do not have any memory of the night? Are you now aware of what you did to me?" Ethan inquired, drawing next to me in the back seat of the car, and my heart raced with a wave of anxiety."I do not remember. Sir, I want you to delete the video of me if you still have it stored. It is against the law to keep my nude with you," I said coldly, and he smiled handsomely."Eva, I had no idea that you are already an attorney to be fully knowledgeable of the law. Since you do not remember taking advantage of me, it is best that you do not bring up this conversation. I am not in the mood to talk about it," Ethan brushed off the topic as if it was not something serious. But I demanded an answer."Mr. Owen, I am not done with my request. If you claim that you do have a video of me on your
