Aria POV

5:43am.

The city is the color of bruises.

Blue and black and waiting to break.

The Wacker bridge is empty.

No cars. No people. Just the river below and the wind cutting through me.

I’m alone because Victoria said "alone" or she’d send the photos to my mother first.

I left my phone in the apartment. I told no one where I was going.

If I’m going down, I’m not taking them with me.

Heels on concrete.

Victoria.

Red coat. Hair pulled back. 23 and sharp enough to cut.

She stops exactly 10 fee

White steps and cameras and that cold Chicago light. Victoria is in a red coat. Luca is in a black suit. His hand is on her back. Her hand is on his arm. They’re smiling. Not big smiles. The kind you do for business photos. But they’re smiling.“Turn it off,” I whisper. No one moves. The anchor’s voice is too bright for this. “At 9:03am this morning, Luca Moretti and Victoria Caruso were married in a private ceremony. Sources confirm the merger between Moretti holdings and Caruso Industries is now finalized. Mr. More

Luca POVCity Hall smells like paper and bleach. It’s 9:03am. The pen is in my hand. Victoria is on my right, spine straight, smile practiced. Her father is on my left, close enough that I can smell his cologne. My brothers are not here. The clerk slides the paper across the counter._MARRIAGE LICENSE__Groom: Luca Antonio Moretti__Bride: Victoria Rose Caruso_My signature looks wrong. It’s too steady. It should be shaking. It should look like the mess I am inside.“Sign here, Mr. Moretti,” the clerk says.So I do.Luca Moretti. The sound is louder than it should be. Ink dragging across paper.Victoria smiles next to me, small and professional. “That’s it,” she says quietly. “Now we just let them believe it.”Mr. Caruso claps me on the shoulder. “Good man. We’ll do the announcement, the photos, the appearances. Let the world think it’s done. The final filings can wait.”I nod. I don’t speak.Because if I open my mouth, I’ll scream. The license is signed, but it isn’t filed. The marri

His voice is rough.I don’t move. The anchor’s voice is too cheerful for this.“Breaking news from Chicago. At a press conference just starting now, Isabella Vale is addressing federal allegations against Caruso Industries and announcing a merger with the Moretti family. Four Moretti brothers are present.”My stomach drops.Four.Not five.I close my eyes.On the TV, Isabella steps up to the podium. Black suit. Hair perfect. She looks like a weapon.Behind her: Marco, Nico, Enzo, Dante. All in black. No ties. No smiles.“Thank you for coming,” Isabella says. Her voice is calm. Deadly calm.“At noon today, Vale Enterprises submitted evidence to the FBI regarding fraud, money laundering, and racketeering within Caruso Industries. Effective immediately, Vale Enterprises is severing all busine

Aria POVVale Tower. 42nd floor. My mother’s guest room. It’s 12:17pm.The room doesn’t smell like anything. The Moretti house smelled like garlic and coffee and Luca’s soap and the lemon cleaner Nico used after he cooked. This room smells like hotel sheets and cold air and money I didn’t earn. It’s clean and empty and it makes my chest ache.I’m on the floor with my back against the bed, knees pulled up, arms locked around them. I haven’t made a sound in 40 minutes.Downstairs, Isabella is in the war room with the feds. She left the Moretti house as soon as I called her from the lobby. Dragged all 4 of them with her because they refused to let me come here alone. Marco is in my mother’s kitchen. I heard a plate break about 10 minutes ago. Nico is in the gym hitting the bag over and over. Enzo and Dante are in the study with phones pressed to their ears, moving money, moving pieces. All 4 of them followed me here after the bridge. No one is in here.Because I said, “Give me space.”So

Studies me.“I don’t hate you, Aria Wells,” she says. “I hate that you exist.”The words land like a slap. She pulls a folder from her bag.Inside: one piece of paper.*MARRIAGE CONTRACT**Victoria Caruso to Luca Moretti*Signed at the bottom. She’s standing at the head of the table. No suit. Just black pants and a white shirt. Hair in a clip. She looks more dangerous like this.“The contract was filed an hour ago,” she continues. “Extortion. Threats. Mention of the warehouse. We have enough.”“So why are we waiting,” Marco asks.“Because Mr. Caruso has 48 hours to respond to our terms,” Isabella says. “After that, the feds knock. And we don’t do this halfway.”Luca hasn’t spoken in 20 minutes. He’s next to me. His thumb is rubbing circles on the back of my hand under the table. He’s not looking at anyone. He’s looking at me.“Terms?” I ask.“If he signs over the warehouse and steps down from 3 board seats, we don’t go public,” Isabella says. “If he doesn’t, we burn him.”Nico whistles. “Damn. Cold.”“It’s war,” Isabella says. “Cold
