{Naomi's POV}
"So you're telling me you'll just walk into the Vitale mansion and walk out with fifty-million-dollar cufflinks like it's the easiest thing to do?" Chloe, my best friend asked, her voice faltering in fear. I turned to face her, still holding onto the red lipstick in my hand. "Yes. It’s not like I have any other choice." I turned to face the mirror and brushed the lipstick on my lips, staring at my reflection, my hand slightly shaking—betraying the fear I was trying so hard to hide. "You have a choice that won’t cost you your life," Chloe exclaimed as she stood up from the chair, walking toward me. "You can get a job and use the money to pay for your mom's hospital bill." I turned to look at Chloe, wondering where she got that idea from, but I knew she was reacting out of fear, and that’s not what I needed at the moment. "Jeez, Chloe. You're acting like you're the one going to do it," I mumbled with an eye roll. "And which job in New York would offer me thirty million dollars in a day to pay for my mom’s surgery bill?" I turned to face her and she lowered her gaze. "You're right. But if anything happens to you, I don’t know if I’ll be able to survive the guilt of letting you do something as stupid as stealing." I sighed, letting the weight of fear off my chest as I placed my hand on her shoulder. "Calm down, Chloe. Nothing bad is going to happen to me, aside from the fact that I’ll get the cufflinks, sell them to Venta Andres as we’ve planned, pay for my mom’s surgery, and keep the rest for her upkeep." "I’m scared, Naomi," Chloe mumbled. "That cufflink belongs to the Vitale Empire, and it's in possession of Enzo. That guy is mysterious, and the last time someone got close to the cufflinks… that was the last I saw of her." I grabbed the expensive cashmere sweater I borrowed from the boutique Chloe's friend owns. "Are you saying he killed her or something?" I asked, staring at my reflection in the mirror. When I got no response from Chloe, I turned in her direction. My heart raced, but I refused to show it. The worst thing that could happen to me right now wasn’t getting caught by Enzo, it was losing my mother, the only person I had left, when I could at least try to save her. Chloe looked at me with so much sadness. "No one knew what happened to her." "Jeez, you’re scaring me, Chloe." I bit my lip and walked over to pick up my purse from the bed. "Because I don’t want you to do it," she said. I rolled my eyes and started making my way to the door. She followed closely behind and stopped when we got to the car. A man dressed in a black suit stood waiting. He smiled and waved at Chloe when he saw her, giving off the hint that she had helped all the way. She talked to her friend to lend me a dress, and also persuaded her friend’s husband to take me to the mansion in grand style for the Vitale party so I could blend in, and even snuck my name onto the guest list. But now, at the dying moment, she was getting too scared. The man opened the car for me, and I got in. I blew Chloe a kiss before he closed the door. Watching her stare at the car in horror with her hand wrapped over her chest, I rested my back on the seat and prayed to whatever I believed in that everything tonight turn out right. Just like Chloe had described the Vitale mansion, it was massive and majestic. Tall, royalty-crafted with marble pillars and golden fixtures. A red carpet stretched across the entrance, and rich people, men in tuxedos and women in glittering dresses, walked around in a glamour of wealth. The moment the heels I had on touched the concrete floor of the parking space, that’s when the height of everything hit me. My heart pounded in my chest. I took a deep breath to calm myself, waved to the driver, and started walking into the mansion. I walked in and gave my name to the man at the entrance. He nodded and stepped aside to let me pass. With my heart still beating rapidly, I made my way to grab a drink and scanned the environment for the hallway Chloe had told me about. Taking a sip of the cocktail, I tried to recall the details. The study was straight down the hallway, then up the stairs, and a little further up again. Once I saw a brown double door with golden knobs, that would be the place. I took another sip and looked around once more to ensure no one was staring before slipping away toward the hallway. My heart eased a little as I climbed the stairs, seeing that no one was around. With just the sound of my heels clicking against the stairs, I smiled, though my hands were shaking. I kept walking until I saw the golden knob. I looked around hastily before grabbing it. I pushed the door open. It creaked softly, revealing the lavish interior of the study, dressed in rich brown and black tones. I stepped inside, remembering Chloe had said the cufflinks were in the lower drawer of the desk, inside a brown box with a security code—579. I had Chloe to thank for being such an observant friend and for staying loyal as a good maid at the Vitale mansion for years. I pulled out the box carefully and stared at it, smiling. I looked around to see if there was anyone, or anything, that could give away my identity, but there was nothing. Pressing the passcode, I stared down at the rare cufflinks, one of the most expensive in New York, glistening in gold under the chandelier light. I picked it up from the box, slid it into my purse, and closed the box exactly as I found it. Straightening up and walking carefully out of the study, I took a few steps down the hallway. I looked back and around one more time. Just as I turned to face forward again, my body collided with someone.{Naomi POV}My heart thudded in my chest as I saw my mother on the floor, crying. Chloe, who stood beside me, shifted slightly."I think we came at the wrong time, Naomi," she whispered. "It's not too late for us to leave. We can come another day."She was right, but my heart was already breaking into pieces. My mom had always told me I wouldn’t understand the level of her pain. I thought I did, especially the day my father died. My heart had felt like it was being ripped out of my chest. But compared to her reaction that day, mine was nothing."Ernesto, please come back. I can’t live without you," my mother mumbled through her sobs, brushing her trembling fingers against the picture frame. "I’ve tried to be strong, but that’s not who I am."I stood frozen, unable to move or breathe properly. Chloe must’ve sensed how I felt because she didn’t try to stop me anymore. She just lowered her gaze, staying silent. Tears filled my eyes, and I sniffled quietly, wiping them away with the back
{Naomi POV}"I think I should go," Chloe mumbled softly, giving me a pitiful look before walking out of the room.Once she was gone, silence filled the space. The only sound left was the sharp click of Maya’s heels against the marble floor as she stepped closer. Her eyes roamed over me with pure disgust, and the longer she looked, the smaller I felt.I wrapped my arm over my chest, feeling the weakness crawling through me. So many things had been happening lately, and after what I saw last night, I didn’t even know what to think anymore."I thought you wanted to leave," Maya said with a smug smile, her voice dripping with mockery. "What made you change your mind? Have you not stolen enough already?"I looked away from her piercing gaze, my throat tight. "What do you want?" I asked softly, giving her the vibe that I wasn't interested to get in conversation with her."What I want?" She clicked her tongue and looked at me from head to toe like I was something beneath her shoe. "I want yo
{Naomi POV}My eyes snapped open to an unfamiliar ceiling. The pounding in my head was sharp and unrelenting, forcing a small wince from my lips. I pushed myself up slowly, my hand instinctively going to my temple to soothe the throbbing ache as my gaze darted around, searching for where I was.And then it hit me. The moment I recognized the heavy curtains, the faint scent of whiskey, and the expensive furniture, my stomach twisted, I was in Enzo’s room. Worse… I was on his bed.My heart thudded so hard it almost hurt. I shifted quickly, desperate to get off the bed, but froze when I saw him.He was sitting on the couch by the window, legs spread lazily apart, a glass of amber liquid in his hand. His eyes, cold and unreadable, were already fixed on me.A chill ran down my spine as the memory of last night slammed into me, the gunshots, the blood, the two men collapsing to the floor like rag dolls. I squeezed my eyes shut, wishing I could unsee it. But it was too late. That image was b
{Enzo POV}My eyes widened when I looked up, and I was shocked to see Naomi. The moment our eyes met, I could see the tears glistening in hers. She was shaking, trembling like someone who had just seen a ghost.“Take this,” I said quickly, handing Mateo the gun. “Dispose of the bodies.”Mateo took the gun without a word, and I rushed out after her. She was already running, fast and desperate, her bare feet hitting the cold marble floor of the hallway. It was as if she was running away from death itself.“Naomi!” I called out, but she didn’t stop.“Don’t come after me, please!” she shouted back, her voice cracking with fear. The sound twisted something deep inside me. How could she have sneaked out of her room and followed me here… to this?If it had been a maid who saw this, I would’ve made sure she joined the men on the floor. But Naomi… Naomi was different. She was not someone I could silence that easily.“You don’t run away from me,” I growled, my voice low and sharp. “Don’t you da
{Naomi POV} I sat in the room for what felt like hours, with nothing but the sound of Enzo’s threat hanging in the air. The way he had left told me something urgent had happened, but I wouldn’t have cared if he hadn’t left me alone in this room. I closed my eyes and laid back on the bed, but they snapped open almost immediately when the image of my mom lying in that hospital bed crept into my thoughts. I sighed and stared at the ceiling, my mind drifting back to Enzo, to that cold, deadly stare of his that I couldn’t quite read. The words he said to me earlier replayed in my head, the part where he asked why I had stopped trying to seduce him. I shifted uncomfortably on the bed, rolling onto my side as if that would help push the thoughts away. But before I could silence my racing mind, the soft beep of the door broke through the quiet, followed by heavy footsteps. My breath hitched as panic shot through me. Someone was coming. Was it someone sent to kill me? When I turned and s
{Enzo POV}The cool night breeze brushed against my face as I turned back to stare at the city. The night sky gave everything a different look from what I usually saw during the day.I huffed, watching the streets below. So peaceful and lively, yet beneath all that beauty was a city soaked in blood, filled with men hiding behind smiles or stiff suits, guns tucked beneath their jackets, ready to shoot without hesitation.The thrashing of clothes from behind me broke my thoughts, and I wished it didn’t. It took every bit of willpower I had not to turn around, pin Naomi to that bed, and fuck her until she screamed my name. Seeing her bare skin, smooth and flawless, and those perfect lips… it made my cock twitch in my pants.I turned toward her direction. She was lying on the bed now, twisting and turning like something was itching her. The sound of her movements kept getting into my head, feeding the desire I was trying so damn hard to control."Will you stop doing that?" I barked, walki
