I woke early on my first full morning at the academy, hoping to slip through the day unnoticed. The dormitory was still quiet as I dressed in the simple uniform provided, braided my long silver hair, and stepped out into the crisp morning air. That hope shattered the moment I reached the main pathway.

Whispers followed me like shadows. Students deliberately bumped into my shoulder as they passed, murmuring loud enough for me to hear.

“There’s the wolfless beauty.”

“I still can’t believe the academy accepted her. Must have been because of that face.”

“Maybe she charmed the admissions board. Strength clearly wasn’t part of the criteria.”

I clenched my jaw and kept walking, refusing to let their words ruin my day. I had endured far worse at home. These strangers wouldn’t break me so easily.

Orientation took place in a large open courtyard surrounded by flowering trees. I found an empty seat near the back and tried to make myself small. A timid girl with light brown hair and soft green eyes was already sitting there. The moment I sat down, she flinched and began apologizing.

“I…I’m sorry,” she stammered, clutching her books tightly. “I’m taking up too much space, aren’t I? I can move if you want…”

“It’s fine,” I said gently. “There’s plenty of room.”

She peeked at me through her lashes. “I’m Emma Willow,” she managed, voice barely above a whisper. “Nice to meet you.”

“Seraphina Ashwyn.”

Before we could say more, a group of girls a few rows ahead turned around and began mocking Emma openly. “Look at her. So weak and awkward. No wonder she’s in the lowest training group already.”

Emma’s eyes filled with tears as she shrank into herself. Something protective flared in my chest. I met the girls’ eyes calmly. “Leave her alone. She’s not bothering anyone.”

The bullies glared at me, resentment burning in their expressions, but they turned back around. Emma looked at me with wide-eyed gratitude. “Th…thank you,” she whispered. “No one’s ever done that for me before.”

Orientation ended with the announcement that we would be divided into training groups based on our assessed abilities. As I stood to leave, a girl with striking red hair stepped directly into my path. She smiled sweetly, though something about it felt too perfect.

“I’m Cassandra,” she said, offering me a cup of fragrant herbal tea. “It’s a welcome gift for all the new students. I hope you enjoy your time here.”

Emma hesitated beside me, sensing something off, but before I could take the cup, another student called my name from across the courtyard. I set the tea down on a nearby stone table and walked over for what I thought would be only a moment.

When I returned, chaos had erupted.

Emma was on the ground. The cup lay shattered beside her. Her face was deathly pale, her breathing shallow and uneven. She had collapsed only seconds after drinking from it.

“Emma!” I dropped to my knees beside her, desperately trying to wake her.

“Someone help! What happened?!”

Students screamed for the academy healers. Panic spread through the courtyard like wildfire. Cassandra had already vanished into the crowd. The healers arrived swiftly, working with practiced efficiency. They managed to stabilize Emma, but their faces were grim as they lifted her onto a stretcher. One of them pulled me aside quietly.

“It was poison,” he murmured. “A rare toxin that can kill a werewolf within minutes if untreated. She’s lucky we got to her in time.”

The Headmaster ordered an immediate investigation, but no one could identify who had prepared the tea or where it had truly come from. Most assumed Emma had been the intended target because of her timid nature and low status. But I couldn’t shake the cold feeling in my gut. The cup had been offered to me first.

News of the poisoning spread across the academy within hours. By evening, rumors swirled everywhere I went. Some students said I attracted nothing but trouble. Others whispered that someone powerful already wanted the wolfless girl dead. I stayed by Emma’s side in the infirmary as the sun set, guilt eating away at me. She looked so small and fragile in the bed, still pale but breathing steadily now. Later that evening, the door opened quietly. Kael Draven stepped inside. He didn’t speak to me. Instead, he approached one of the healers and asked in a low, controlled voice about

Emma’s condition how long recovery would take, what the toxin was, and whether there had been any other incidents like this. His emerald eyes flicked toward me once, unreadable, before he left as silently as he had come.

Adrian arrived shortly after, carrying a small bouquet of bright flowers. He placed them on the table beside Emma’s bed with a gentle smile.

“These are for you, little one. Heard you had a rough day. Thought these might brighten things up.”

Emma’s eyes lit up for the first time since the incident. She managed a shy smile. “Th…thank you…”

Rowan appeared last, quietly questioning nearby students and healers about anyone who might have seen Cassandra after the tea was offered. His calm, strategic questioning revealed nothing new, but the fact that all three princes had become involved in what should have been a simple academy accident only fueled the gossip even more.

I sat beside Emma’s bed long after the princes had left, watching her sleep. Guilt settled heavy in my chest. “I’m so sorry, Emma,” I whispered. “I think that poison was meant for me. I promise you…whoever did this won’t get another chance to hurt you. Not while I’m here.”

Neither of us noticed the tiny crescent moon engraved on the broken shard of the teacup that had been carefully collected as evidence by the healers. The academy had only just begun, and already danger lurked in the shadows. But for the first time, I wasn’t facing it completely alone. Emma was my first real friend here, and I would protect her with everything I had. Even if it meant drawing more attention from three infuriating Alpha princes who seemed determined to involve themselves in my troubles.

The next afternoon, Emma and I headed to the academy courtyard after classes, hoping to enjoy the fresh air before dinner. The space was packed with students talking in small groups, practicing light sparring near the edges, and relaxing around the large stone fountain that stood in the centre. Water sparkled in the sunlight, and for a brief moment I almost believed I might actually have one peaceful afternoon. That hope lasted less than a minute. A familiar voice called my name across the courtyard. “Seraphina.”Isabella stood near the fountain with Cassandra and several of the academy’s most popular girls. Her smile was sweet enough to look almost genuine. Emma immediately leaned closer, voice low and urgent. “We should leave please. Nothing good ever happens when she smiles like that.” I shook my head. “I’m done running away every time she decides to make a scene. If I keep avoiding her, she’ll only grow louder.” Emma bit her lip but stayed beside me as I walked over. I

A few days after the practical lesson, academy life began settling into something that almost resembled a routine. Emma and I spent most of our mornings attending lectures, taking notes, and trying to ignore the lingering stares that still followed me through the corridors. When the midday bell rang, we escaped to the canteen and claimed the quietest table we could find near the far windows, hoping for at least one peaceful meal. Unfortunately, peace never seemed to last. Emma was halfway through a quiet comment about the next history assignment when her eyes suddenly widened. She leaned closer and whispered, “Don’t turn around… but something just changed.”I didn’t need to turn. The shift in the room was impossible to miss. Dozens of students sat straighter. Conversations dropped to near silence. The air itself seemed to tighten. Without looking, I already knew who had entered. The three Alpha Kings. Kael, Rowan, and Adrian walked through the crowded canteen with the effortless c

The next morning, I walked into the academy exactly as I had promised Emma I would. I had barely slept. My eyes felt heavy and the weight of the previous day still clung to my chest, but I refused to lower my head. Students stared and whispered as I passed. The rumours from the day before had spread even further overnight. A group of first-years deliberately moved aside when they saw me coming. One of them called out sarcastically, “Planning to argue with the Shadow Prince again today? Or are you taking a break from challenging people stronger than you?” Another laughed. “Maybe she’ll trip over another log just to get attention.”I kept walking. Inside my head I repeated the same words over and over If I react, they win. Emma walked close beside me, her voice soft and worried. “You don’t have to pretend it doesn’t bother you,” she whispered. “I can see it in your face.” “I’m fine,” I answered, though the words felt thin. “I just need to get through the day.” “I’m staying

The humiliation from the previous day followed me into every corner of the academy. As I walked through the corridors the next morning, students deliberately moved aside, whispering and laughing as I passed. Some exaggeratedly imitated the way I had knelt to gather my ruined books, complete with dramatic gasps and pretended spills. Others called out jokingly as I walked by. “Was challenging the Shadow Prince worth it?” “Maybe next time she’ll ask him for lessons on how to stay on her feet.”Every laugh felt like another wound, sharp and deliberate. I kept my head high and my expression carefully blank, pretending none of it reached me. Inside, each comment settled heavier than the last. Emma stayed close the entire time, her voice soft and repeated. “I’m so sorry. I should have done more yesterday. I should have stood in front of you or pulled you away sooner. I just froze again and. ” I stopped walking and turned to her gently. “Emma, none of it was your fault you tried

The academy corridors were unusually lively after the morning classes. Students gathered in small clusters between lessons, voices overlapping in a constant low buzz of gossip and laughter. Ever since I had openly challenged Kael several times, new rumours had spread through the academy like wildfire. Some whispered that I was desperate for the Alpha Kings’ attention. Others claimed I had forgotten my place entirely and needed to be reminded of it. Every time I walked past a group, conversations stopped just long enough for the laughter to start once I was out of earshot. Emma walked closer than usual, her voice soft with worry. “Maybe we should eat somewhere quieter today… away from everyone. The library courtyard is usually empty this time.” I shook my head, keeping my gaze fixed ahead. “I won’t spend my academy life hiding from people who already dislike me. If I start running now, I’ll never stop. They’ll only grow louder.” She bit her lip but didn’t argue further. “I jus

The academy announced that every first-year group must complete a field assignment by collecting rare moonflowers from the restricted forest. The flowers only bloomed in the hour before sunrise, which meant we had to leave while the sky was still dark and the air still cold. Students complained under their breath about the early hour, but no one dared question the Headmaster’s orders out loud. Our group gathered near the forest edge just as the first pale light began to touch the treetops. Kael took command without waiting for permission or discussion. No one objected not even the instructors standing nearby. His reputation alone was enough. “Adrian, Rowan scout ahead and mark any dense clusters,” he ordered. “Emma, stay in the safer clearing near the path. Do not wander.” Then his emerald eyes settled on me. “You stay beside Emma. Do not slow the group down.” I folded my arms. “I’m not one of your soldiers, Kael. You don’t get to assign me like luggage.” He stepped closer
