CHAPTER 29 The Night the Pack Bowed

last update Last Updated: 2025-08-12 18:00:55

Caleb’s POV

I didn’t tell anyone where we were going. I didn’t tell Audrey, Derek and not even Adrian, though I could feel his suspicion burning into the back of my neck the entire time I was driving. It was better this way; it means less warning and less time for anyone to spin it or run their mouth before I put it on the table.

It’s obvious we were heading to the old barn where I’d arranged for the council meeting. The venue was already full when we got there.

Wolves were pacing in the darkness, some were lounging against the twisted beams as if they owned the area; others were standing in groups, speaking, and staring at me like they had been waiting for this very moment.

Audrey stepped in behind me and the noise dropped but not completely gone.

The meeting for the day started immediately we sat and I didn’t give them time to start making accusation. “If we can’t agree what she is, then we vote tonight and no more stalling. And I wouldn’t tolerate any backroom talk about taking h

Audrey’s POVThe fallout from the stupid dance list hadn’t even cooled before things got worse. By the time gym rolled around the next day, half the school had decided it was open season on me. I heard whispers trailing me down the hallway, girls laughing behind their hands, and guys making dumb comments like, “How’s she gonna dance with three at once?”And then there was Caleb. He didn’t wait, and he didn’t even give me a second to breathe after Coach barked out the warmup drills. He was already there, leaning against the bleachers with that cocky grin like he’d been planning it since breakfast.“Partner up, princess,” he said, ignoring the fact this wasn’t a partnered activity. He dragged his hand through his dark hair, all smug and shiny with sweat from the earlier laps. “Figured we should practice for the ball. Because I don’t want you stepping on my shoes in front of the whole town.”I rolled my eyes so hard I swear it hurt. “We’re in gym class and not dance rehearsal.”“Exactly

Audrey’s POVI should’ve known the moment the loudspeaker went live during homeroom that nothing good was about to happen. You could feel it, that hush across the desks when everyone looked up at once, waiting for whatever announcement was going to screw with our week.“Attention, Ravenfalls High,” Principal Helena’s voice boomed, way too cheerful for eight o’clock in the morning. “We are excited to announce this year’s Winter Masquerade Ball! Attendance is mandatory for juniors and seniors. Please remember: every student must sign up with a partner. The sign-up sheet will be posted outside the main office at lunch.”And that was it.The second the speaker clicked off, the room exploded. Girls squealed, guys groaned, and desks screeched back. Somebody yelled, “I’m not wearing a mask; that’s creepy as hell!” Another voice shouted, “Shotgun, asking Bella first!” and half the room booed.I wanted to sink straight through the floor. My stomach dropped like someone had thrown a bowling bal

Audrey’s POVThe Unity Oath ceremony hadn’t even finished properly. Everyone was pretending it was a success, acting like the packs were united, but it wasn’t unity. It was panic. Elders cutting things short before blood was spilled. Wolves itching for a fight but forced to swallow it. Hunters lurking in the dark like sharks circling a cage. And me, standing dead center while my wrist decided to glow. Not a faint shimmer, and it was not something I could hide anymore. Actual burning light crawling across my scar like someone had shoved fire under my skin. People saw it. They definitely saw it. That was the part I couldn’t scrub out of my head. The whispers, the stares, the way every face in the crowd turned toward me at once. Like, oh, she’s the problem. She’s the reason this whole thing’s about to blow up.By the time Monday hit, the entire damn town knew.Walking into Ravenfalls High felt like walking straight into a glass box. People didn’t even pretend to be subtle. Heads turned,

Audrey’s POVI swear Ravenfalls High had turned into a rumor factory overnight. It wasn’t even subtle anymore. The second I stepped into the hallway, voices dipped low and heads bent together like they were conspiring. By third period, it was no longer whispers; it was straight-up stares, wide eyes tracking me like I had grown a second head.“Marked.” That was the word being thrown around like wildfire. I caught it drifting from a locker corner, murmured in the cafeteria line, and spat out with some kind of smug glee from the cheerleaders at their table. She’s already marked. Someone claimed her. That's what they are saying everywhere. The thing about rumors is they don’t care about truth. They don’t even care who they hurt. It wasn’t like any of them actually knew what the hell had happened the other night, but apparently the world had decided I was no longer just Audrey Dauval, new girl. Nope. I was property now, stamped and tagged. I'm off the market, you know what I mean?“Don’t

Derek’s POVIn the commotion and chaos, there was a call for attention from the school public address system.“Attention all students, the principal wants to see everyone at the gym ground.” The voice came from the address system.“Gather immediately, and please ignore any form of threatening situation you may notice. It is a decor” the voice continued.“A decor?” Audrey whispered behind me as we started moving towards the gym through the hallway. We got to the gym ground to meet other students already gathered, some in groups talking in a low voice, others just looking at Audrey. The door at the back opened. And there she was: the envoy from the Alpha Council walked in dressed in black while the principal followed behind.“Enough of talking” she said, voice smooth but carrying a weight that made everyone still. Even Caleb and Adrian, stood still listening.Everywhere was quiet even though the hall outside was chaos, and echo of snarls and distant growls that is still lingering, but

Derek’s POVThere were screaming in the halls, the sound of terrified kids running past, and lockers slamming, while chairs were toppling. It was like someone had set the entire school on fire and we were all trapped in it.Everywhere was in total chaos and I could smell fear and confusion in the air. Something was terribly wrong, and it felt terrifying.Audrey was pressed to me, and her hands clinging very tight like life rafts, “Derek… what the hell is happening?” she yelled over the chaos.“I don’t know,” I shouted back, dragging her around the corner. “Something’s hunting, and I don’t know if it’s human or wolves.”It’s like the teachers are gone and Security? I wouldn’t tell in the center of this chaos. Every exit was blocked by wolves, enforcers of the packs, and eyes were scanning like predators. They were supposed to protect us, but it seems that is not happening right now, they just made it feel like a cage.“Why aren’t they letting us leave?” Audrey asked, her voice crackin
