At first, my heart sank. I took in a shaky breath. Thoughts ran through my mind. The demon Uncle had finally revealed his true nature and I could lose my life if I made the wrong move. I released another shaky breath as I felt my wolf stir with a feeling I could not understand. Was it excitement? I pushed it aside and locked my eyes with his. His crimson eyes glowed even brighter as if he could see that I was daring him. Then I smiled. I smiled the brightest I ever had. "My Prince. . ." I managed to say. "Is this how you treat your new bride?" He must have never expected this reply because he frowned immediately like I had thrown him off balance. The crimson glow in his eyes flickered before the original emerald color came back. The hostility was gone but that didn't mean I was safe. "Drop the act. I can see right through you," he whispered firmly. I stopped smiling. "What do you want?" I shrugged. "To survive." Then I lifted my palm slowly and placed it on the hand that was still closed around my neck. "And to be a good wife to you." I trailed the tip of my fingers on the arm. He scoffed and pulled away instantly. Then he stared at me in silence; probably trying to decide what to do with me . So I smiled again, as innocently as I could. He blinked and looked away as he straightened his shirt. "Most people are always trembling at the mere sight of me or thinking of how to run from me," he muttered. "Why aren't you trying to run?" "People run from monsters. . . Are you a monster?" I pushed off the wall and slowly came to a stop before him. He corked his brows at me before chuckling darkly. "Odette, was it?" "Yes, My Prince," I nodded obediently. Then he placed his fingers in my hair. "You are quite an interesting little thing. I hope you don't die like the others." My heart skipped. Others? How many women had walked through these halls and never come back? But he turned and left before giving me an explanation. I followed him out hoping to press on for answers but I was ambushed by the palace maids. "My Lady, we need to prepare you for the night as per customs. Come with us immediately!" The head maid from earlier announced. I looked at Rafael and saw him smirking at me before disappearing up the stairs. The sight caused an uneasy feeling to form at the pit of my stomach. I swallowed hard and followed the maid. When we were inside the room they had previously used to prepare me, I finally asked the question. "Has Rafael been married before?" The maids instantly went still. "M— my Lady, I am afraid we are not authorized to answer that question. Only Prince Rafael can tell you that himself," the head maid spoke up. I sighed heavily. "Is there anything else you can tell me about Rafael?" I probed. The maid looked conflicted but she stared at me with kind eyes. "It will be a shame to send you to face him unprepared," she finally whispered. "Whatever you do, do not draw blood. Blood forces the monster to the surface." A cold chill washed over my spine and I swallowed hard as I watched her. So, the rumors were true. He really was a monster. But I pushed the thoughts away. There was no reason for me to bleed tonight. I could survive this. She finished getting me out of the dress and put me into a black night dress. It was lacy at the upper part, leaving very little to the imagination. It stopped just over my thighs and the other maids helped me into the satin jacket that came with it. "Thank you," I whispered. "May I know your name?" "Clara," she answered. I picked up my mother's scroll which I had originally left in the room when I came to change the first time. Then I also grabbed another balm and began to apply it to my entire body. Clara watched me in confusion. "Why are you applying that?" I smiled. "It's plan B." Then I took in a deep breath before turning toward the door. "I am ready for him." As I walked out, Clara and the others followed me closely behind to direct me to his room. The fear in their hearts was evident on their faces. I exhaled heavily and faced my goal. Every step up the stairs got my legs feeling heavier but I had to trust in my abilities as well as follow Clara's instruction. If I could abstain from bleeding, he won't lose control. Or whatever that meant. When I arrived at the top of the stairs, all the maids stopped moving. "What's wrong? You aren't coming?" "His room is the last door at the end of the corridor," Clara said. I peered down the dimly lit hall. It felt like I was in a horror movie about to make the craziest mistake. I would be lying if I said I wasn't terrified yet I needed to act brave. "It's all for Mom," I whispered to myself before turning to the maids. "Thanks." "May the Moon goddess be with you," Clara whispered. I smiled and walked down the corridor like I had no ounce of fear in me. When I arrived at the last door, I knocked twice. "Come in.”~CAMILLEI ran until my lungs burned.Branches scratched my arms and face as I stumbled through the woods. The hunters surrounded me while the terrifying roars of the black feral bear echoed from somewhere behind us.My heart refused to calm down.I could still see Adrian riding away. The way he never once looked behind him."Your Highness, this way!" One of the hunters shouted as he grabbed my arm before I could trip over a fallen branch.I nodded and I forced my legs to keep moving.Luckily for us, the echoing roars of the black feral bear had begun to fade. I survived despite getting abandoned by Adrian.By the time we caught up to Adrian, the forest had already grown dark. We had seen a firelight ahead and that was what we followed. We ended up in Adrian's camp.Several tents had already been set up and some of the men were gathered around a fire. The moment Adrian saw me emerge from the darkness, his eyes widened."Camille!"He rushed toward me immediately. For a second, I almo
~CAMILLEI wrapped my arms around Adrian's waist as the horse carried us deeper into the woods.I was beaming with excitement. The hunt was taking place and I knew that Adrian would come up on top. He always did. Adrian turned slightly and smiled at me. "You look pleased.""I am enjoying myself," I replied.“That is exactly how it should be. With me by your side, you will always be happy,” Adrian replied and I couldn’t miss the pride in his voice. “I trust you completely, my love,” I whispered as my smile grew wider. That fool Odette didn’t realise what she easily gave up. Sadly, she wouldn't get to understand what she had missed because she’d die soon anyway. “Will we be able to get the best game?” I asked out of concern."Of course." He spread his arms confidently. "Look at the men I brought with me. Every one of them is a skilled hunter. There is no way anyone here can beat us."I looked around at the men riding with us.So far, they had already killed several black feral rabb
~ODETTEI landed hard on the ground. More pain exploded on my ankle and I groaned in pain. Rafael stopped and turned to face me. He looked surprised to see me on the ground. "So you are capable of feeling pain." I raised my brows at him. "What? When did I give you the impression that I do not?" I looked down at my ankle and tried to touch it but I winced the moment my fingers touched it. So I gave up. Rafael came closer and squatted before me. "Aren't you a healer? Shouldn't you be able to heal yourself?" "It doesn't work that way. There are rules I need to follow," I explained. He furrowed his brows at me and reached out to examine it himself. "Ah!" I cried. "Be gentle, it hurts." He stopped and looked at me. "This is new. I have gotten so used to seeing you act tough and unbreakable that it's strange for me to see this side of you." I blinked at him as I realised that I had indeed fallen out of character. My wolf stirred within me. When did I become so comfortable around
~ODETTE"People of the Wolf kingdom," Tiberius began as we all stood before the tall trees that made up the woods. "The time has come for us to send our children in to continue the age old traditions. The one who brings back the best game whether in quantity or in quality will be crowned winner and in the eyes of the goddess, seen as deserving of the Wolf throne." Rafael stood tall by my side, his aura alone enough to scare away anyone from coming to stand close to us. Everyone avoided being on our side. They were all too afraid of what would happen if the demon got unleashed. But Rafael didn't seem bothered by any of this. He seemed to be focused on me instead. It was as if I was the only thing in his world and I could swear I caught him inhaling my scent at one point. "Now listen attentively as I list the approved animals for the hunt," Tiberius continued. "Shouldn't you listen to what he has to say?" I asked Rafael who was watching me closely. "If we don't bring anything ba
~ODETTERafael kept his emerald green eyes on me. He was so close that it made my wolf dance at the depth of my core. He looked down at my lips and I believed he was going to kiss me. He started breathing heavily the next minute. And I saw him struggling to control himself. There was a sort of fear within him. He was scared of giving in. He did not want to surrender to me. Perhaps because he hated the feeling of surrendering— of being vulnerable to someone else besides himself. I saw the storm in his eyes. There was a battle going on in his head and I was the cause of it. So I did the one thing I could think of, the only way I knew that might end the storm. I leaned closer and eliminated the distance between us. I kissed him. For the second time since I met him. But this time, it was different from the last time or the first time he kissed me. I felt something, an urge. . . It surged to life from the depth of my core. And I could not explain what it was. What did it want me
~ODETTEThe hall went crazy. "The demon Prince wants to go too?" "That's dangerous!" "What if he loses control and goes on a killing spree?" Whispers of all the terrified people filled the hall. I could almost see the terror in them. Their faces had gone pale, as white as ghosts. Yet no one had the courage to rise and come forward to lay their complaints to the king directly. They were too afraid of him. "Father," Layla's voice suddenly cut from behind me. 'I do not think allowing Rafael to participate at the annual Hunt Festival is a good thing." As she spoke, Rafael rose from his feet unbothered by her opinion and came to kneel before me. "No offense but Rafael already carries a demon within him. Sending him out there where blood is inevitable is like feeding a monstrous flame," Layla explained her point. The hall seemed to agree with her because the murmurs seemed to quieten down. Rafael gently took my hand, almost as if no other person existed in the hall. "Will you com
~ODETTEMy heart skipped two beats at the news. My wolf froze. "What do you mean by that?" I asked in a voice way too calm for the situation that I was in. "Come see for yourself," Clara said as she began to lead the way. I followed her without any objections. "I was just beginning to serve th
~ODETTEI stared at the Alpha King in disbelief. Did he just stand up for me?Why would he do that? The entire hall fell silent and everyone waited for the Alpha King to give his verdict. "From the moment that host walked in and began to criticize everything Odette created today, up until the eld
~ODETTEThe hall suddenly exclaimed. Everyone scampered to their feet and my heart skipped. How was the Alpha King here? He barely ever showed up for things like this, only super important ones and this did not top any chart in terms of importance. Either way, I smirked at Adrian. "You were sayi
~ODETTEI made my way down the stairs and stopped at the kitchen once more."Is everything ready?" I asked.Clara and the rest of the maids bowed to me."They all are, my Lady," Clara announced."Remember, when the ceremony begins, have the maids come in with refreshments that will act as starters
