Chapter 6

Morning came too soon.

A knock at my door had me jerking awake, my heart immediately racing. It was a servant bringing breakfast.

“The Alpha requests you present yourself to the pack this afternoon,” she said. “As is tradition after a Luna’s bonding.”

Right. The formal introduction to the pack. The part where I had to stand beside Zane and pretend we were a mated pair.

I picked at the food and tried not to think about last night. About what I’d seen. About the fact that my husband couldn’t even bear to touch me but apparently had no problem touching himself while thinking of… someone else.

Because that’s what it had to be, right? He was thinking of one of his beautiful she-wolves. Imagining someone slim and perfect beneath him instead of—

Stop it, I told myself firmly. Stop torturing yourself.

But the thoughts wouldn’t stop.

They plagued me through getting dressed in the formal Luna attire the servants laid out. Through having my hair styled in an elaborate updo that felt like it was pulling my scalp. Through the walk to the main courtyard where the pack had gathered.

Zane was already there, standing on the raised platform like the king he was. When I approached, he didn’t offer his hand. Didn’t acknowledge me at all until I stood beside him.

Then, for the benefit of the watching pack, he placed a hand on the small of my back.

The touch burned through the fabric of my dress. The mate bond, unwanted as it was, sang at the contact. It was the first time he’d voluntarily touched me since the forced marking.

“Pack members of Fangstain,” Beta Ezra announced, his voice carrying across the courtyard. “I present to you Alpha Zane and Luna Tiana, bonded under the full moon.”

The pack responded with the traditional howl of acceptance, though I noticed several wolves barely opened their mouths.

I tried to stand tall and look like I belonged at Zane’s side.

But I could feel their judgment. Could practically hear their thoughts:

That’s his Luna? The fat servant girl?

No wonder he looks miserable.

How long before he takes a chosen mate and discards her?

The ceremony was mercifully brief. Zane made a short speech about strength and unity. Then we were dismissed, and he removed his hand from my back so quickly.

“Return to your chambers,” he said quietly, not looking at me. “I have pack business to attend to.”

Always somewhere else to be because my presence irritated him.

I nodded and turned to go, my throat tight with unshed tears.

“Tiana.”

I stopped, my heart lurching stupidly at the sound of my name from his lips.

When I looked back, his expression was unreadable. “The healers will begin your treatments tomorrow. Be prepared.”

Treatments. Right.

He had mentioned it in the contract. The injections and potions designed to prepare my body to carry his heir.

Because that’s all I was. A womb with legs.

“Yes, Alpha,” I said quietly.

I spent the rest of the day alone in my chambers, staring at the glass wall and wondering how long I could survive this.

That evening, as the sun set and shadows filled my room, I heard raised voices from Zane’s chambers but I could not see the faces.

Zane’s voice was clear, sharp with anger. And another voice I recognized after a moment—

Kaius. His nephew.

I shouldn’t have eavesdropped. But the glass wall conducted sound better than I’d realized, and I couldn’t help but hear fragments:

“—not right, Uncle. It’s obvious the way you are treating her and there’s already gossip around the packs”

“Since when did my business become yours?”

“She’s your mate. Your Luna. Not some—”

“Exactly. My Luna, so I decide what to do with her and how to do it.”

“But uncle, she…”

“Enough.” Zane’s voice cracked like a whip. “I don’t care about your concern or what anybody is saying.

I only care about securing my legacy, and she is the unfortunate vessel the Moon Goddess saw fit to curse me with. End of discussion.”

Silence fell.

Then I heard footsteps, and a door slamming.

Wow!

He had made it clear to me, but he could not just hide his disgust at least?

Why the moon goddess had chosen to mock me this way, turning my little wishes to a curse, I was not sure.

I lay back against the pillows and stared at the glass until the room blurred.

I pressed a finger to the pulsing mark at my throat and felt the sudden, hot, smallness of panic. Then the panic narrowed into something else.

Two years. I would survive. I would learn where his power lived, and I would use it to my advantage.

I would redeem myself.

Zane I returned to the pack house three days after leaving for the northern territory dispute. The issue that had taken me out had been resolved, and I should have felt relieved to be back. Instead, I felt restless. I handed off my travel pack to a servant and made my way through the familiar corridors of the pack house. Something felt different about it. I couldn’t place what. Ezra found me in my office not long after, carrying reports that had accumulated during my absence. “Anyone urgent?” I asked, scanning the first document. “Nothing critical.” He set the stack on my desk. “Though there was an incident in the main hall two days ago.” I looked up. “What kind of incident?” “Margaret and the Luna had a confrontation in public. Margaret made some… disparaging comments about Luna Tiana’s position.” My hand tightened on the paper. “And?” “Kaius intervened, defending the Luna.” “Where’s the Luna now?” “In her chambers, last I saw,” Ezra replied. “She’s been

Kaius “So this is all that came in?” I questioned Gamma Rowan, who shook his head in response. “Okay, so you would note this…” I paused, hearing a scream. Loud enough and familiar. I dropped the inventory sheets and moved toward the sound. The commotion was coming from the main hall. I pushed through the doors to find a cluster of pack members gathered in a loose circle. At the center stood Margaret, her face flushed and her voice carrying across the entire space. “You were the careless one! Do you have any idea what this was worth?” And there was Tiana, standing perfectly still with something small and broken in her hands. A moon opal bracelet. The delicate silver links were snapped, the stones scattered across the floor like drops of captured moonlight. “But it was just on my wrist…” Tiana started, but Margaret cut her off. “That’s the problem! If you know the worth, you won’t just be wearing it recklessly. Now you hit it against me and it snapped. You don’

Kaius I stood at the edge of the practice yard, my arms crossed watching the training exercise I organized for the morning patrol teams. Twenty wolves worked through formation drills, moving as units, responding to commands, and learning to work as a team to cover each other’s weak points. It was a routine exercise. Except Tiana was here, which made it feel different. She stood on the opposite side of the yard, observing the omega warriors she requested be included in patrol training. She had brought the idea forward at our last meeting with the council. Her concern was that the omegas needed the combat skills necessary to defend themselves and contribute to pack security. Most of the elders had dismissed it but Uncle had approved it without discussion, and here we were. I watched her move between the wolves, offering corrections and encouragement. In all honesty, the way she carried herself was commendable, as if she had completely fit into the role. A smile cam

Tiana Zane’s shirt hit the floor, then his belt followed. His hands moved to his pants, pushing them down the same way he had pulled mine. I watched, unable to look away even though every instinct screamed that I should. Seeing his bare body again, I realized it was exactly what I had imagined all those years. “Second thoughts?” Zane’s voice cut through my spiraling thoughts. I looked up to find him watching me with that same dark intensity. “No.” He moved back to the bed, settling his weight over me. His hands braced on either side of my head, caging me in. “Tell me if you need me to stop,” he said quietly. I nodded, not trusting my voice. His hand moved between us, positioning himself. “It might be painful,” he mentioned, and somehow that made me stiffen. He was large and I feared how he would feel inside of me. My throat bobbed staring at him, and it was only when he murmured “breathe” that I realized how visible my anxiety had been. I did breat

Tiana Two hours after sunset, I stood outside Zane’s room with my hand raised to knock. I had changed three times, finally settling on a simple dress, and brushed my hair until it fell in waves past my shoulders. Then, I immediately pulled it back into a braid because what was I doing, trying to look pretty for him? My knuckles rapped against the wood before I could talk myself out of it. “Come in.” His voice was muffled through the door but clear enough. I pushed it open and stepped inside. Zane’s desk was covered in papers and maps that he had clearly been working on before I arrived. He stood beside it now, one hand braced on the wooden surface, watching me enter. “You asked me to come,” I said, hating how uncertain my voice sounded. Zane didn’t respond immediately. Just looked at me with his expression giving nothing away. I moved further into the room, my feet carrying me toward the bed without conscious thought. I sat on the edge, folding my hands in my l

Tiana I found myself in the library without remembering how I’d gotten there. Shelves of books stretched toward the ceiling, some filled with pack history, and others with adventures. I’d spent countless hours here as a servant, dusting and organizing while dreaming of someday having the freedom to actually read them. Now I had that freedom and all I could think about was a crying woman in Zane’s arms. If Zane already had a son, why make me go through all of this at all? Why force me into a contract to bear him an heir, and subject me to those brutal treatments? None of it added up. I pressed my fingers against my temples, hating that I was even thinking about this. My relationship with him in the first place was temporary. So what did it matter if he had a child with someone else? What did it matter if he held her while she cried or if that little boy had called him father the other day? I forced myself to take a breath, to push the thoughts away and focus on somet
