chapter 3

It was raining cats and dogs and I was pleased with the fact that I reached the hospital on time, or I would have been a drenched whale. I had a night shift at the hospital and couldn't be happier to get away from my house which was more like a mental asylum.

Marina, my stepmother never left a chance to make me feel like an outcast. She was the real bitch I ever came across. That evil features and hate dripping down her eyes for me, alone.

"Ms. Ambrose you are going to be in charge of all Dr. Frank's patients today as he is running late." Nat, the receptionist called out to me, handing me my schedule and I internally groaned at the list of names I had to attend to. Although I loved my job, it always worked like a coping mechanism for me but the tasks always used to get tiring.

"Okay, Nat. Thanks." With that said I took off for room 23 that had my first patient of the night.

I was done taking a round of the rooms I was in charge of when my phone buzzed in my pocket. I walked near the reception as it was a little quiet than the rest of the place before taking out my mobile which showed Marina's name on the screen and I almost groaned in exhaustion. She never lets me live in peace always breathing down my neck.

"Yes?" I snapped as soon as I picked up the call.

"Don't you have any manners how to greet someone?" I internally rolled my eyes at her pathetic excuse of humiliating me, I was sure my dad would also be sitting near her, or she never forgets to call me names.

"I am on duty. What do you want?" Dealing with her was the last thing I wanted to do at this time of the night. It was already pretty late and the hospital was also deserted, if lucky I would be able to catch an hour of sleep.

"I am also not very keen on talking to you!" She shrieked from the other end of the phone before continuing. "I was just reminding you of your date this Saturday with Mr. Gavin. Don't you forget Valerie or I won't be responsible for what I will do to you?" Although she tried sounding as uninterested as possible, only I knew the threat she possessed for my bright future.

That gold digger never stopped chasing after people's money. After looting my father now she was after Mr. Gavin or more like the old brute of our town who always had his perverted eyes for girl's asses. He was a repulsive man that even his late wife was never fond of him. His creepiness knew no bounds and was multiple times charged for assault. His reputation in the town was as dead as meat but he cared less and still carried on with his pervert ways.

"Okay, you don't need to remind me all the time, my memory works just fine." I snorted, looking at the injured man carrying a battered woman who was limp in his arms. God! Another accident. Poor lady.

"Valerie that is not how you talk to your mot-." I heard my father through the phone but I was already on a run for the medical supplies required to tend the injuries.

"Dad I have got an emergency I will talk to you later." With that said I cut the call and rushed after the couple.

Although I did tell dad that I will talk to him later but I didn't mean it. I did not want to cater to another fight with my dad, Marina fuels him just enough already.

The lady was wheeled to the operation theater I assumed with its red light on. Hurrying over to that man who sat with his head in his hands I cleared my throat.

"Sir you need to come with me. You're bleeding." I asked politely, but he just shook his head without sparing me a glance.

I knew this must be traumatic so I placed the supplies on the empty chair next to him, making him look at me, passing him an assuring smile I started wiping the blood on his hands before proceeding to clean the wound on his forehead.

As I placed a hand on his shoulder to clean the blood on his neck, he winced and I was quick to retreat my hand. "Sir? You need to come with me you're hurt!" I stated blatantly but he just shook his head and stood up.

Sighing, I ran back to the reception area to call for the male nurses when a man in his late twenties approached the desk. He was drenched in rain from top to bottom and was heaving, and his crystal blue eyes were cold and hard. He was in a hurry with the way he demanded the way to the operation theater. I dictated to him and without a thank you, he rushed inside.

I asked Paul and Ron to follow me as we too headed after that man picking up the clipboard on my way. Upon reaching there I was taken aback by the cruelty of that blue-eyed man who was punching the injured one to the ground.

"Sir what are you doing? Sir?" I asked cautiously yet he did not hear me call him out, too occupied to take notice of the surrounding.

"Sir this man was already injured and you made it worst. I am sorry if you don't stop I'll have to call the security." I spoke in a hard tone but squirmed at my place as he eyed me from top to bottom, his heated gaze awaking unfiltered desires deep within me. Ron and Paul rushed to put the injured man on the stretcher and wheeled him out of there to another room to tend to his wounds.

What happened to her?" He asked, almost demanded with a straight face and eyes as cold as ice.

"We cannot conclude at the moment, sir." I walked near him hesitantly by the way he had his eyes trained on me. "Here. Kindly fill these papers. Also do you by any chance happen to know the man that was just taken away?" I asked cautiously.

He filled in the form, without a word and nodded.

"Yes, he works for me." He spoke authoritatively, as if in command.

"Alright, so please fill this out as well." I handed him another set of papers, and he complied. He gave them back and stood up before walking away and I made my way back to my desk near Dr frank's office.

I took a deep breath in. I felt a headache forming and knew I will be needing a break. I still had to think about the date with Gavin. He was such a pig lusting after girls. These days I was his target. He already ruined many girls but I won't be on his to-ruin-list. I knew how to fight just fine. I was playing along just for the sake of my father. He was my only family left in this whole, cruel world. My birth mother left me too early.

The night was still young as rain drenched the whole city, yet I was already exhausted to my core. I didn't sleep well last night too. Way too scared to meet Gavin in my nightmares as well. He was hell-bent on ruining my life. Although I was a very kind-hearted woman still I always wished for his death to get rid of some of the negativity from the face of the earth.

I just hoped, Gavin dies before our so-called date and instead of going to the date, I get to attend his funeral.

That would be more fun. Gosh, I looked like a witch cursing someone like that. I sighed as I carried on with my work.
