Forbidden love

Janessa's pov

A bullet rips into the wall, inches from my head. My body trembles; a silent scream is trapped in my throat. Roy, Eric, and Xavier stand there, grim-faced, offering no comfort. There is nowhere to run. This isn't just bad luck; someone has deliberately set us up. But who? Which of these three men—the ones I trust most—has betrayed me? Who is responsible for this chaos?

It all started months ago, on March 2, 2022, at 8:00 AM.

I woke up, got ready, and headed downstairs for breakfast. My dad was already eating with Lucy and Cole. I exchanged quick greetings before taking my seat. I still remember how hot the soup was when I sipped it.

“Janessa Collins, daughter of Thomson Collins, head of the Bloodshed Mafia… ironic, isn’t it? You’ve certainly made a splash in the papers. Everyone’s rather curious about what you look like,” my father mumbled, lowering the newspaper.

“Isn’t it fascinating, Cole? My little stepdaughter’s already eclipsed my acting career. Such a shame I didn’t have her kind of publicity.” Her smile didn’t even reach her eyes.

“Mom, please,” Cole murmured, his voice low and urgent.

“Excuse me,” I said, rising from my chair. “I have some business appointments to attend to.”

“Are you seeing Eric today? It’s about time you two got married. It would be… beneficial for everyone involved.” Her tone was sugary sweet, but the underlying threat was palpable.

“Mom, Janessa is still young. They shouldn’t rush into marriage, especially one arranged by the families. Developing genuine feelings is so important.”

“Twenty-three and still unmarried? Honestly, Janessa, you’re wasting precious time.”

“Your mother’s right,” my father added, without looking up.

“Yes, Father,” I murmured, my voice barely audible, as I walked away.

Of course that witch is always right, when did I even win an argument with her as my opponent?!

As I walked outside, I could feel the cold wind and the falling leaves from the trees. A white sports car stopped in front of me before I reached the gate. The car window opened, and there was Xavier Lopez, Eric’s underboss, giving me a charming smile.

He got out and opened the door for me, ensuring I wouldn’t hit my head. As we sped off, I stared blankly out the window. He was always a gentleman.

“Are you alright?” Xavier asked, his voice tight with worry. He glanced at me briefly before focusing back on driving.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Just thinking about getting out of this life… eventually.”

“Love, you worry too much,” he said, squeezing my hand gently. “I’ll figure something out. We’ll find the right time. It’ll be alright.”

“Okay… I’m just afraid that sooner or later Eric will find out about our relationship.”

Even though Eric and I have known each other since childhood he rarely opens up to me. Maybe that's the reason why I didn't develop any feelings for him even though we got engaged.

I pulled out my phone, mindlessly scrolling through news headlines while Xavier talked. I couldn’t focus, his words washing over me, meaningless. I couldn’t bring myself to care.

Breaking News: Three Major mafia bosses arrested in a huge bust for crimes like extortion and drug dealing. A secret agent helped take them down, but his name is being kept confidential.

"Interesting," I said, turning off my phone and tossing it onto the backseat.

If this agent was as good as they said, the Bloodshed Mafia or the Riverblood Mafia were probably next. Maybe I could even use this to my advantage.

Suddenly, Xavier slammed on the brakes. The tires screeched, the car shook wildly before coming to a stop. Two men in black suits emerged from a car blocking our path. They looked professional, cold, and dangerous.

"What the..."

Xavier loaded his gun. When it comes to life related to the mafia, you always have to be prepared, because danger never leaves you.

“Janessa, stay down, okay?”

I nodded and calmly waited.

He unbuckled his seatbelt and stepped out of the car, closing the door with a solid thud. He raised his hands in a gesture of surrender.

I wanted to pull him back inside, to stop him from getting closer — but my body wouldn’t move, as if it had a life of its own.

Before Xavier could take another step, the two men opened fire. Bullets ripped into the car, the sound deafening. Xavier dove back inside, using the door as a shield. Thank god it was armored.

“Shit! I should have seen this coming…”

Xavier threw the car into reverse, slamming his foot on the accelerator. We lurched backward. They were right behind us, more cars joining the chase.

"I bet it's some enemy again," I said while helping Xavier buckle his seatbelt.

I just have to do something.

Before a moment of hesitation, I grabbed Xavier's gun, rolled down the window, and took aim. My hands were shaking, but my focus narrowed. I squeezed the trigger, the recoil jarring my arm. The bullet shattered the windshield of the lead car, and I fired again, hitting the driver. The car swerved, careening off the road and exploding in a ball of fire.

“You know how to use a gun?” he asked, his voice a mix of surprise and disbelief.

“Long story. Doesn’t matter now. Just drive,” I snapped.

Did I just…

We raced through the streets, the other cars still on our tail, until we reached a dead end, a narrow alley that offered no escape. They had us cornered. They stopped, surrounding us. Xavier cut the engine and raised his hands again as he slowly got out signaling me to stay and he closed the car door.

“How about we talk this out?” Xavier called, his voice deceptively calm. “Take me instead. Just let her go,” he said, tossing his gun onto the ground.

The man laughed, a harsh, ugly sound. "Nice try. You're no use to us. We're here for her. She's Janessa Collins, right?”

“She's not,” he denied.

“You can't fool us!”

How did they know? Only a few people knew my true identity.

I spoke to Xavier using the earpiece, "This guy must be involved with the mafia."

"You're right. Don't worry; I'll get you out of here safe," he responded, his voice low and assuring.

"Hey, you two, stop talking! And you, get out," the man barked, grabbing the earpiece from his ear.

I raised my hands while going out of the car.

"Okay, okay, easy there, tiger," Xavier replied, his tone laced with sarcasm and his hands up.

Then their boss came out. I can't recognize his face since he was wearing a mask, holding a picture frame of a man like he was going to a funeral.

He looks familiar somehow.

The arms I shouldn't craveJanessa's pov“Janessa! Calm down… it’s just me, okay.”I froze mid-step, my grip on the kitchen knife loosening.“Eric?”“Yes, that’s it. Lower your knife.”I exhaled shakily. “Thank God… I thought it was another intruder.”“It’s alright. I’m here now.”“Wait—aren’t you supposed to be in Europe? And why in the world did you come in through the window when there’s a perfectly good door?”He gave a small, tired smirk. “One question at a time. I came back early… Roy told me Gilbert’s niece tried to kidnap you.”“Roy? That idiot— I told him not to mention it.”“He’s loyal to me. No surprise there.”I frowned. “And the window?”“Your door was locked.”“Was it?”That’s when I noticed it—blood smeared just above his eyebrow, and beneath the damp smell of rain, there was the faint metallic tang of gunpowder. My stomach tightened. Did he… no that can't be, maybe I'm just being too sensitive.“Do you have men’s clothes here?” he asked, shrugging off his jacket.“Wh

Crossing lines…Eric's povThe helicopter touched down on Roy’s private estate, blades cutting the night air like sharpened knives.I stepped out, adjusting my tie—not because it was out of place, but because I needed my hands busy. If I didn’t, I might walk in there and end this too fast.Roy was leaning against the doorframe of the main house, arms crossed.“In the basement,” he said, with a serious tone. “They’re tied. No one touched them.”The basement smelled faintly of metal and fear.I adjusted my tie, more out of habit than necessity, and walked down the steps with the same pace I’d take to a dinner meeting. Violence, like business, is best handled without hurry.Liam was tied to a steel chair in the center of the room. His shirt clung to him, soaked from the bucket of water someone had already thrown over him. His lips were split, one eye already swelling.Reina sat a few feet away, her wrists bound behind her, ankles tied to the chair legs.Beside her stood Celine—one of

Italy… Eric's povAs we landed in Italy, the thought hit me before I could stop it—Janessa used to talk about this place back when we were in high school.I still remember that afternoon, sunlight pouring through the classroom windows, dust drifting lazily in the air. She leaned over her desk, resting her chin in her hand, her voice soft but excited while the teacher kept teaching us about the history of italy.“Eric… I want to go to Italy one day too. They say it’s the city of love like Paris.”She giggled, not knowing what that did to me. Her chuckles have always been my weakness and my biggest happiness.“Why don’t we go now?” I’d asked, pretending it was casual. She shook her head, still smiling. “No… even if we can go there, we have to have a reason. If you already have a girlfriend and I have a boyfriend, let’s go to Italy together.”You mean when the day comes we’ll be together? Because you’re the only one I’ll ever want, Janessa.“Okay,” I’d said, forcing my tone

Stick to disguise Janessa's povCole and I hurried downstairs. When we arrived, we saw a maid kneeling, tears streaming down her face as she sobbed in front of the shattered teacup."You filthy thing! You're just a maid, and you can't even do your job right!" Lucy slapped the maid. "Don't you know that teacup was worth more than your life, you bitch?""Madam... please... forgive me..." The maid plead. As Lucy was about to slap the maid again, Cole stepped between them. He ended up being the one slapped. "Mom! Stop! You're making a scene."Lucy touched Cole's swollen cheek. "Oh God, son... Why did you do that?" Cole signaled the maid to leave.“Mom, you can't just hit someone as you want." They sat on the couch, and I ordered the maids to bring an ice pack.Lucy put the ice pack on his face herself. "Next time, don't meddle in my business... See what happens? That slap wasn't supposed to be on your precious face."How dramatic."Cole... I'll get going now.""Okay, have a safe ride."

His not aroundJanessa's pov “Elaine,” I said, knocking another arrow. “I thought we were having coffee. Why are we suddenly engaging in a highly competitive archery duel?” My arrow found its mark, splitting the target just as Elaine’s arrow did the same.“I’m just in a mood,” she said, a mischievous glint in her eyes as she aimed for the target. “No particular reason. Just feeling… competitive.”My phone rang. I set down my bow and arrow. I saw it was Roy. “I’ll just take this,” I said.“Okay… but make it quick.”“I will,” I said, heading outside to answer it.“Cuz… listen… we have a problem. A big one. No, bigger than that.”“ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! He hung up! That absolute jerk! He couldn't even have the decency to tell me straight! Why?! Why do I even have a cousin like him?!”Heading back inside, I carefully placed my phone and other items in my bag, getting ready to depart.“Oh, you're leaving already?” she said softly, putting down her bow. “Something came up at the hospital, I

The MastermindJanessa's POV"It was Mr. Daniel... He asked me to do it. He was afraid that if his business went under, the mafia wouldn't help him, so he wanted to use Eric's fiance to threaten him.”Just as I expected. That old guy was behind it all.Xavier turned and then shot the man in the head, satisfied at the information. "I told you already, I'm not like Eric."Roy whispered to me, "Cuz, this Xavier guy is way more brutal than the boss himself. And I've been with Eric since he took over, but I'm still just a glorified errand boy."I shoved him. "Get away from me! And for the record, he became underboss based on his own merit. How long you've been around doesn't matter.”"Whatever.... I still think it's unfair."Xavier wiped the blood stain in his hands with a handkerchief and threw it away before approaching us. "Let's go now."Roy and I nodded, and we followed him outside. Xavier's phone rang once again, and he answered it as soon as he saw Eric's name."Boss... We already
