The culprit

Janessa's pov

"Long time no see... Miss Collins." He took off his mask, revealing himself.

Now I knew why his presence had seemed so familiar.

Two months before, Eric had eliminated a small, rising mafia family simply because they had betrayed him. He'd spared some of them, but killed their leader.

"Now do you remember me?"

"Oscar, Is this your way of thanking my fiancé for being so… generous? I'll be sure to mention it, tell him you appreciate his hospitality."

His face tightened, and he pulled out a gun, pointing it right at us.

"I remember how you all killed my brother! Xavier was the one who finished him, and Eric just stood there, watching like it was a show,” He then directed the gun at me. “I wonder if your boss would feel the same pain if I kill his precious fiance"

Xavier just glared. "You ungrateful idiot. You're digging your own grave, Oscar. Choosing to go down the same path as your brother."

Out of nowhere, Xavier pulled out a small explosive and tossed it. We scrambled back into the car as it blew up, flames shooting up high. We drove far away from the explosion, Xavier then stopped at the roadside and examined me.

"I'm taking you to the hospital," Xavier said, checking the scratch on my forehead and the blood on my elbow.

"It's fine, really. Just a scratch."

"Stop being stubborn and let me take care of it!"

"Okay, okay…"

We sped off, leaving the mess behind. He drove to Eric's private hospital—super discreet location.

When we got there, Xavier just picked me up. "Put me down! I can walk!"

"Just hold still," he said, holding me tight.

I hid my face, trying to ignore the stares from the nurses. It was embarrassing.

The nurses were gossiping. "Is that Xavier Lopez? He's even more handsome in person!"

Another nurse giggled. "Seriously! Any woman would melt… He could totally be the father of my kids."

Seriously? Can't these nurses just do their jobs instead of drooling over my man?

The doctor, this nervous guy, carefully cleaned and bandaged my cuts, shaking under Xavier's stare.

"Xavier, can you give us a minute? You're making the doctor uncomfortable."

He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Fine. Call me if you need anything, okay? I'll be right outside." He patted my head and left.

The doctor whispered as he worked. "Miss Collins… Why is he acting like your boyfriend? He needs to remember his place—he's just your fiancé's underboss."

I looked down. "You're reading too much into it. He's just worried Eric will get mad if something happens to me.”

"Makes sense…"

If only I could tell the world I'm yours.

As soon as the doctor left, Xavier was back. "Still hurting?”

I hugged him tight. "I told you, I'm tough!"

He chuckled, kissing my head. "Always so stubborn… If I could just tell the world you're mine, I would."

I noticed his knuckles were all bruised. I touched them, and he flinched. "Why didn't you get the doctor to look at these?"

"It's nothing. I just… I don't like people touching me." He pulled his hand away.

"Don't be ridiculous. Sit," I said, pushing him onto the bed.

I grabbed the stuff and cleaned his hands, then wrapped them up and brushed my hands against his and I could feel his heart racing.

Is it from the ambush earlier or is it because I'm too close to him?

“All done,” I kissed his cheeks.

"You're such a tease…”

His phone buzzed. "Gotta take this, okay?"

I nodded, and he stepped out, talking low. I got curious and eavesdropped.

The voice on the other end sounded like my cousin, Roy.

Xavier said, "Did you find the culprit yet?"

"Got him. I deserve a raise, man. I'll send you the address."

"Yeah, yeah, whatever…" He hung up.

The culprit? Were they talking about the one who attacked us earlier—so Oscar wasn't alone in this?

"Janessa, I know you're out there. Come on."

He turned, saw me, and I laughed nervously. "Just curious… Can I come with you?”

"No, you can't."

"I want to!"

We argued, and I won, like always. He finally gave in, and we headed to the hideout—some creepy, unmarked building outside the city. We went down to the basement, and it smelled bad that I can't explain. In the middle of the room, a guy was tied to a chair, covered in blood. A single light bulb barely lit up the place.

Roy approached us and looked at me from up to down. "Xavier... Why did you bring her here? What a burden."

"She insisted," Xavier replied.

Me, a burden?! This jerk... I would end him if it weren't for the fact that he's my cousin.

I forced a smile. “Sorry if I’m such a burden, Roy.”

I looked around at the makeshift prison. Cages lined the walls, filled with scared people. Hostages. Xavier made me wait near the entrance, but I could see through the bars. Xavier took off his jacket and pointed a gun at the guy's head.

"Who ordered you to kill us? I'm telling you, I'm not like Eric... I spare no life."

The guy laughed, a weak sound, his face bloody.

"Last chance," Xavier said, pulling a knife. He stabbed the guy in the chest.

"Ahhh! You'll get nothing from me!" he screamed.

Xavier nodded to Roy, who came back, shoving a woman into the room. She was blindfolded and tied up.

"You monsters! Let my sister go!" the guy yelled.

Roy laughed. "Let her go? Sure. You talk, she walks."

The guy didn't say anything. Xavier raised the knife, about to stab the woman, but the guy screamed, "STOP! I'll tell you everything, just… don't hurt her!”

Xavier and Roy looked at each other and told their guys to take the woman away.

"Now," Xavier said, his voice cold. "Who gave the order?" Roy turned on the recorder.

The arms I shouldn't craveJanessa's pov“Janessa! Calm down… it’s just me, okay.”I froze mid-step, my grip on the kitchen knife loosening.“Eric?”“Yes, that’s it. Lower your knife.”I exhaled shakily. “Thank God… I thought it was another intruder.”“It’s alright. I’m here now.”“Wait—aren’t you supposed to be in Europe? And why in the world did you come in through the window when there’s a perfectly good door?”He gave a small, tired smirk. “One question at a time. I came back early… Roy told me Gilbert’s niece tried to kidnap you.”“Roy? That idiot— I told him not to mention it.”“He’s loyal to me. No surprise there.”I frowned. “And the window?”“Your door was locked.”“Was it?”That’s when I noticed it—blood smeared just above his eyebrow, and beneath the damp smell of rain, there was the faint metallic tang of gunpowder. My stomach tightened. Did he… no that can't be, maybe I'm just being too sensitive.“Do you have men’s clothes here?” he asked, shrugging off his jacket.“Wh

Crossing lines…Eric's povThe helicopter touched down on Roy’s private estate, blades cutting the night air like sharpened knives.I stepped out, adjusting my tie—not because it was out of place, but because I needed my hands busy. If I didn’t, I might walk in there and end this too fast.Roy was leaning against the doorframe of the main house, arms crossed.“In the basement,” he said, with a serious tone. “They’re tied. No one touched them.”The basement smelled faintly of metal and fear.I adjusted my tie, more out of habit than necessity, and walked down the steps with the same pace I’d take to a dinner meeting. Violence, like business, is best handled without hurry.Liam was tied to a steel chair in the center of the room. His shirt clung to him, soaked from the bucket of water someone had already thrown over him. His lips were split, one eye already swelling.Reina sat a few feet away, her wrists bound behind her, ankles tied to the chair legs.Beside her stood Celine—one of

Italy… Eric's povAs we landed in Italy, the thought hit me before I could stop it—Janessa used to talk about this place back when we were in high school.I still remember that afternoon, sunlight pouring through the classroom windows, dust drifting lazily in the air. She leaned over her desk, resting her chin in her hand, her voice soft but excited while the teacher kept teaching us about the history of italy.“Eric… I want to go to Italy one day too. They say it’s the city of love like Paris.”She giggled, not knowing what that did to me. Her chuckles have always been my weakness and my biggest happiness.“Why don’t we go now?” I’d asked, pretending it was casual. She shook her head, still smiling. “No… even if we can go there, we have to have a reason. If you already have a girlfriend and I have a boyfriend, let’s go to Italy together.”You mean when the day comes we’ll be together? Because you’re the only one I’ll ever want, Janessa.“Okay,” I’d said, forcing my tone

Stick to disguise Janessa's povCole and I hurried downstairs. When we arrived, we saw a maid kneeling, tears streaming down her face as she sobbed in front of the shattered teacup."You filthy thing! You're just a maid, and you can't even do your job right!" Lucy slapped the maid. "Don't you know that teacup was worth more than your life, you bitch?""Madam... please... forgive me..." The maid plead. As Lucy was about to slap the maid again, Cole stepped between them. He ended up being the one slapped. "Mom! Stop! You're making a scene."Lucy touched Cole's swollen cheek. "Oh God, son... Why did you do that?" Cole signaled the maid to leave.“Mom, you can't just hit someone as you want." They sat on the couch, and I ordered the maids to bring an ice pack.Lucy put the ice pack on his face herself. "Next time, don't meddle in my business... See what happens? That slap wasn't supposed to be on your precious face."How dramatic."Cole... I'll get going now.""Okay, have a safe ride."

His not aroundJanessa's pov “Elaine,” I said, knocking another arrow. “I thought we were having coffee. Why are we suddenly engaging in a highly competitive archery duel?” My arrow found its mark, splitting the target just as Elaine’s arrow did the same.“I’m just in a mood,” she said, a mischievous glint in her eyes as she aimed for the target. “No particular reason. Just feeling… competitive.”My phone rang. I set down my bow and arrow. I saw it was Roy. “I’ll just take this,” I said.“Okay… but make it quick.”“I will,” I said, heading outside to answer it.“Cuz… listen… we have a problem. A big one. No, bigger than that.”“ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! He hung up! That absolute jerk! He couldn't even have the decency to tell me straight! Why?! Why do I even have a cousin like him?!”Heading back inside, I carefully placed my phone and other items in my bag, getting ready to depart.“Oh, you're leaving already?” she said softly, putting down her bow. “Something came up at the hospital, I

The MastermindJanessa's POV"It was Mr. Daniel... He asked me to do it. He was afraid that if his business went under, the mafia wouldn't help him, so he wanted to use Eric's fiance to threaten him.”Just as I expected. That old guy was behind it all.Xavier turned and then shot the man in the head, satisfied at the information. "I told you already, I'm not like Eric."Roy whispered to me, "Cuz, this Xavier guy is way more brutal than the boss himself. And I've been with Eric since he took over, but I'm still just a glorified errand boy."I shoved him. "Get away from me! And for the record, he became underboss based on his own merit. How long you've been around doesn't matter.”"Whatever.... I still think it's unfair."Xavier wiped the blood stain in his hands with a handkerchief and threw it away before approaching us. "Let's go now."Roy and I nodded, and we followed him outside. Xavier's phone rang once again, and he answered it as soon as he saw Eric's name."Boss... We already
