Chapter 13

The forest was too quiet.

Aria's paws barely touched the ground as she ran beside Kael. The night air was thick with unease. Every shadow looked like an enemy. Every sound made her wolf bristle.

"Stop," Kael said suddenly.

They halted on a ridge overlooking the valley below. Smoke curled into the sky from the remains of a ruined outpost.

"Is that... one of ours?" Aria asked.

Kael growled low. "It was."

The scent of blood drifted up. Fresh. Werewolf. Not rogues.

Aria stepped forward. "This was a message."

Kael nodded. "From the Sealed Alpha."

Back at the pack house, Lyra stood before the Councilstone. The runes pulsed with silver light.

"He's watching," she whispered.

A whisper returned from the wind. "He remembers."

Kael and Aria arrived at the ruins by dawn. Burned wood, ripped cloth, claw marks too clean, too precise. Not an attack. A warning.

Aria knelt beside the pack flag.

"They took no lives," she said. "Only burned our pride."
