Serena Vale
~•~ “I promise you, Rena. Everything is going to be fine,” my best friend, Lila assured me. “We’ve checked, double-checked, triple-checked, and even quadri-checked. Everything is perfect.” “Are you sure?” I couldn't help but question. It was my big day. I’d been imagining it forever. If anything were to go wrong that day, I wouldn't be able to enjoy the rest of the day. “I'm sure,” she said, taking my hands in hers to stop them from fidgeting. “You'll be fine. Your wedding will be the best one anyone in attendance has ever been to.” “Thank you, Lila. I know you've been barely putting up with me in the past few weeks.” Lila chuckled, sitting down on the couch. “It'll all pay off soon. By the night after tomorrow, you'll be the wife of one of the most eligible bachelors in New York. Well, he wouldn't be a bachelor anymore.” I laughed, joining her on the couch. I'd heard a lot of people describe Douglas as charming, successful, and confident. But to me, he was the man who brought me coffee when I worked late. He was the man who fell asleep reading on the couch next to me. He was the man who assisted me in applying for a new job even though he could take care of all the bills. He was the man who made me believe that love wasn't so complicated. I checked my phone. There was no text from him yet. He was likely having a meeting that ran late. But that was okay. This was his last day at work before I would have him all to myself for the next few days. Our rehearsal dinner was tomorrow. The wedding, the day after, and we'd be leaving for our honeymoon right after that. I couldn't wait. “Still at work?” Lila asked when she saw me peering into my phone. I nodded. “That's love for you. You plan a wedding and he's still busy thinking about spreadsheets.” I laughed, pretending I wasn't just a little bit affected by it. “At least one of us has the brain cells to pay the bills.” “You're saying that like you don't have a job waiting for you when you come back from your honeymoon.” “I can't rely on him for everything.” “True.” Lila, standing tall at 5 '9, was a well-known model. There wasn't a runway she hadn't walked on. She was well sought after yet she had been sparing most of her time on me these past weeks, helping me prepare everything for the wedding even if Douglas had hired a wedding planner. She was an angel sent from above. She claimed she was helping me because she was free but I doubted anyone like Lila would be free for three weeks straight. She most likely had to cancel a lot of things to come through for me. The only way to repay this favor was to be there for her too when she wanted to get married. I doubted that would be anytime soon though. She had a new man every month and was unapologetic about it. By the time Lila left, the sun had gone down and by the time the front door opened again, it was past midnight. Still in the living room, I stood up automatically, a smile on my face. I was just about to doze off. Thankfully, I met him before I slept. Douglas stepped in, his suit hanging on one arm. His blonde hair was tousled as though he had run his hand through his hair too many times. His eyes were tired and he looked surprised to see me. “Still up, baby?” “I keep thinking about our big day,” I said honestly with a grin, taking his suit from him as he took off his shoes. “Couldn't sleep so I decided to wait for you.” He kissed me briefly, then set his suitcase on the counter. I watched him undo his tie and his cufflinks. As he rolled his sleeves up, I poured him a glass of water, handing it over to him. “Are you excited?” “About marrying you?” He grinned. “Of course, I am.” *Your mom called me earlier,” I told him as we discussed the schedule for the next day. “She wanted to confirm the suite at the hotel.” “I told her to relax. She's treating it like a royal wedding.” I laughed. Douglas’ mother adored him. He was the only son out of five kids. By extension, she adored me too. She was the second-happiest person about my wedding. I was the first. “Well, you're her only son. Let her have her moment.” He walked forward and wrapped his hand around me. “You're the moment.” He squeezed my shoulders reassuringly, dropping a kiss on my forehead. “You're my moment.” “And you're my moment.” I rested my head on his chest, listening to the sound of his heartbeat against my ear. After being together for two and a half years, his words still managed to make butterflies erupt in my stomach. We stood together in silence for a while before Douglas finally spoke. “Let’s get to bed. We have a long day ahead of us.” He was right. The next two days were going to be more stressful than the past weeks but it would be worth it. It would be worth it to walk down the aisle straight to the man I loved and wanted to spend the rest of my life with. He kissed me goodnight, mumbling something about early meetings and seeing me at dinner tomorrow, before he eventually drifted to sleep. He must have had a long day with how easily he crashed, not bothering to even take a shower or completely take off his work clothes. I turned off the lights and lay awake a little longer, my heart full with happiness. Everything was ready. The dress. The flowers. The vows. I couldn't wait for the next day to come. If only I knew that was the beginning of something very new. A warning would have been nice at least.Serena Vale~•~Rafael had told me to focus on spending time with my family but I could barely concentrate anymore. Not just me, but everyone else was worried, especially when we hadn’t heard from Nikolai and Rafael in five hours.I finally texted the group chat around eight at night.[Me: Everything okay?]There was no response so the next time I texted, it was around ten.[Me: just let me know if you guys are fine]Nikolai responded then.[Nikolai: Rafael’s father is stable. Rafael’s exhausted. Let’s talk tomorrow?]I frowned. I doubted I’d be able to sleep properly but I was sure they were already stressed and I didn’t want to add to it.[Me: Okay, goodnight.]The next morning, I couldn’t sit still anymore. I grabbed my things, called a cab, and set out. I usually spent the entirety of the holiday at home, only leaving on the second day of the new year, but my parents understood this time so they didn’t even try to stop me.The drive to Rafael’s house felt endless. The snow definit
Nikolai Vetrov~•~Rafael didn’t say much on the drive. He was rarely on good terms with his father but I could see how much the news of his father's hospitalization affected him.His father wasn’t like my grandfather who went to the hospital for attention. Rafael’s father was straight to the point and didn’t beat around the bush, which was why he easily disowned Rafael when it started to affect his company. I actually preferred that to my grandfather’s quiet manipulation. He hadn’t called or texted me since the day I left his house. Elena and her father stopped calling a few days ago when they realized my decision was final. I still wasn’t sure what the consequence was, but I wasn’t scared of it.Rafael stared straight ahead, drumming his fingers on his thigh, his jaw tight. He didn’t glance at me once. I kept my eyes on the road but every few minutes, I’d spare him a glance. He didn’t ask me to come. He didn’t ask me not to come either. Rafael was out of the car before I could pro
Rafael Moretti~•~Christmas morning was odd.The youngest Vale was seventeen yet there were presents under the Christmas tree in the morning. At the Moretti household, you stopped receiving presents as soon as you turned eleven. Even before then, presents were never under the tree. They were just handed to you at the end of the night and it was always something expensive and random. I hated it, which is why I made it necessary to get my siblings well-thought-out presents as soon as I began earning.Unfortunately, we couldn’t spend Christmas together this time.As I watched Serena walk down the stairs in a horrendous Christmas sweater, I felt oddly satisfied. Everyone had one except Nikolai and me but that was because her mother didn’t know we were coming until like two days ago. She didn’t have enough time to knit two more. We’d survived a kidnapping, the media circus, a public disownment, walking out on a public engagement, and many more just for Nikolai and me to end up in Serena’s
Serena Vale~•~Going home for Christmas was always comforting. This year was… different.I usually went back home alone. Douglas spent Christmas with his family and I did the same with mine. We had only planned to have a joint Christmas this year, but obviously that didn’t work out.Who would have thought I’d be going home with two men this year?Rafael drove, singing along to his playlist that no one else liked. Nikolai sat in the backseat, his posture stiff. The sight made me chuckle. “You don’t have to look like you’re going into war,” I said, twisting in the front seat to stare at him. “I’m not.”Rafael snorted. “You absolutely are.”Nikolai shot him a glare, his gaze softening when he looked back at me. “I just want them to like me.”That made my lips tug in a smile. “They will,” I said gently. “My parents are really kind. And they already like Rafael so you’re not walking in alone.”Rafael’s smile was smug. “I set the standards high.”“All he did was bring my mom flowers.”“Yo
Nikolai Vetrov~•~The headlines exploded the next morning. As expected, there were articles about me walking out on the Solokovs, but somehow, someone had caught wind of Serena’s kidnapping and the news was making waves.‘THE TWO BILLIONAIRE HEIRS RISK IT ALL FOR THEIR SHARED GIRLFRIEND: This might be true love after all.’Some people called me a rebel heir. My pictures were all over the internet. Women posted that they wanted a man like me. Men couldn’t decide whether I was brave or an idiot.I didn’t care about any of those. All that mattered was that Serena was safe.Rafael and I had spent the night at her place, but we just watched her sleep, then crashed on the couch in the living room.Lila left in the middle of the night. She had left work just to be sure Serena was okay. Now that she was certain she was safe, she could return to work. The next morning, I tried to order takeout, but my card declined. “Cutting me off from money I worked for is crazy,” I muttered to myself as I
Serena Vale~•~Rafael and Nikolai refused to leave.Well, it wasn’t like anyone chased them away but they weren’t making any effort to leave. Night eventually came. Tessa left. But Rafael and Nikolai followed me into my room.I sat on the bed. They sat on the couch opposite the bed. I chuckled at the sight. “Are both of you going to stay here all night?”They shared a glance, then nodded. I bit my bottom lip. It wasn’t like I minded that, but this was the first time the three of us were alone after we left the island. It was… for lack of a better word, awkward. We stayed in silence for a while. Then Nikolai suddenly stood up and walked toward me. I strained my neck to look up at him. He squatted in front of me instead. “Can we talk?”I bit the inside of my cheek, not replying.“Are you mad at me?”“You didn’t reach out for two weeks.” I pointed out.He lowered his gaze guiltily. “I know, baby. I’m sorry. I just… I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t think you’d want to hear from me.”
