KADE’S POV

I hadn’t planned on enjoying this as much as I did.

Flying six hours home after twelve years just to make my brother’s life miserable.

Watching him lose his good boy act, choke on his pride and still get beaten to a pulp in front of his teammate? Making everything he’d built in my absence crack underneath his feet?

That had kept me entertained the entire flight.

Noah Covey was the part I hadn’t accounted for.

I’d planned for Luca’s anger. His humiliation. His hatred.

Her throat bobbed, and her gaze flickered briefly to my mouth before returning to my eyes. I waited. But nothing came out of her yet. Her fingers tightened around the dresser, her knuckles paling against the polished wood. She held my gaze, but that stubborn little crease had returned between her brows. There it was. That familiar one. The fight between what she wanted and what she thought she should want. I almost smiled. “That’s what I thought.” I pushed away from the dresser. She looked momentarily caught off guard when I stepped back, as though she’d expected me to keep pressing. Instead, I turned towards the door. “Kade?” I didn’t look back immediately. “What?” “Where are you going?” I strolled towards the door, taking my fucking time. “Thought I’d leave you to your mourning.” My fingers closed around the handle. I gave it a slight turn, then paused. Behind me, I could practically feel her watching. I smi

I nodded slowly, keeping the satisfaction off my face. “Miami.” “Yeah.” She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “I got the job. They sent me the offer, and I have to start work almost immediately.” I studied her for a moment. The shadows beneath her eyes hadn’t passed me. Neither had the exhaustion she was doing a pretty good job of hiding. She looked like she hadn’t slept properly since the news. “Congratulations, Covey.” She glanced at me, seemingly surprised by my sincerity. “Thank you.” “When are you off?” “Tomorrow.” My fingers curled inside my pocket. Tomorrow. Fuck, yeah! I kept my expression neutral. “That’s soon.” “I know. I still have to sort through my things and find somewhere to stay.” She sighed. “There’s a lot to do.” She turned towards the dresser, her fingers brushing over the polished wood before reaching for the photograph tucked beside the mirror. Luca. Of fucking course. S

The first thing I noticed was her expression. Like she’d just walked in and found a body bag on the floor. “What the hell are you doing here?” I glanced at the photograph in my hand, then back at her. “Funny. I was about to ask you the same thing.” “I asked first.” “God, you're bossy, Covey. Not that I'm complaining.” She hadn’t closed the door. Her fingers tightened around the handle as her gaze moved from my face to the photograph, then to the dresser beside me. I slipped the photo strip behind my back. “Nothing to see here.” “Are you seriously going through Luca’s things?” I raised a brow. “I’m in his room, Covey. What exactly did you expect me to do? Admire the shitty wallpaper?” “That wasn’t what I asked.” “No, you asked what I was doing here.” I slipped my free hand into my pocket. “I came to apologise to my mother. About the morgue. I was out of line.” Something in her expression softened. The suspicion hadn’t quite left, but her grip on the door handl

In the first picture, Luca had an arm slung around her shoulders, grinning at the camera. Noah’s cheek was pressed against his, her smile was wide. The second had him pulling some stupid face. In the third, Noah was laughing so hard her eyes were squeezed shut, one hand planted against his chest. I lingered there. I’d seen Noah smile before. Usually when something caught her off guard, or when she was trying and failing to hide her amusement at something. But this was different. Then I looked at the last picture. Luca was facing the camera. Noah was looking at him. Not at the lens. Not at whoever was taking the picture. Him. Her expression had softened into something so open, so effortlessly affectionate, it made my jaw tighten. I knew that look. Six years. Six fucking years, and she’d spent them looking at my brother like he was the only man in the room. I turned the strip over, then back again. What the fuck had Luca done to deserve that? The bastar

Her gaze settled on mine. “Thank you.” She reached across the space between us, laying her hand over mine. I resisted the urge to pull away. “I know things weren’t easy between you and Luca,” she continued. “But I keep thinking I should’ve done more. I should’ve tried harder with both of you. Maybe if I had…” Her thumb brushed over my knuckles. I glanced down at her hand, then back at her face. “There’s no point digging through all that now.” The words came out almost gentle. Fucking hell. I was getting good at this. Her lips parted, trembling slightly. “Oh, Kade.” She shifted towards me, her hand slipping from mine as her arms began to open. Oh, for fuck’s sake. I knew exactly what was coming. I had a split second to consider getting up, but she’d already leaned across the space between us. Her arms closed around my shoulders. My entire body went rigid. The muscles along my back locked, my jaw clenched, and my hands hovered uselessly beside her. For

Her grip on the handkerchief loosened. “Luca?” I nodded, letting my gaze drop to the carpet. “Yeah.” I let the silence stretch before speaking again. “We weren’t exactly on good terms. I know that. There was a lot of shit between us, and I was too busy being angry to do anything about it.” I paused, then looked back at her. “I kept thinking we’d have time to sort it out. That we’d eventually get around to talking.” Catherine’s eyes shook slightly in their sockets. “But I never wanted him dead,” I added, keeping my voice low. “Whatever happened between us, I wouldn’t wish that on him.” Well. There were a few things I would’ve wished on him. A particularly unpleasant encounter with a woodchipper came to mind. Catherine lowered her gaze. She pressed the handkerchief beneath one eye, then looked at me again. “I know.” Her voice wavered. “I was angry yesterday,” she said. “I shouldn’t have lashed out like that.” “It’s fine.” “No, it isn’t.”
