I spent extra time applying my makeup. I wished I didn’t care about my looks but I did. Most people from my high school were going to be there and even though years had passed, I didn’t want to be the same person they used to know.
I picked out a green dress with a low neckline.
“Honey, you look perfect,” Nathan gasped as he walked into the room
“You seem nervous, you don’t have to be. It’s just a wedding.”
I sighed and offered him a small smile. Nathan was supportive, he knew I was bullied in school and reuniting with my bullies was something I didn’t want to do.
Mama made me promise to attend. With papa being sick, she needed my help in catering for Zac’s and Olivia’s wedding. Our family’s restaurant was being paid handsomely to handle the event and it was going to open more opportunities for us in the future, it was too important to pass up.
My plan was simple, make sure everything ran smoothly and leave as quickly as possible. I had no intention of lingering in a place where old memories and faces could find me.
This wasn’t just any wedding, it was a grand affair, one of the biggest weddings in town.
Zac and Olivia’s wedding was so beautiful, the garden was transformed into something out of a fairytale. Nathan and I were going to get married next year in the local church where my parents had wed. I couldn’t help but feel a little jealous that my wedding wasn’t going to be anything like Zac and Olivia’s. I swallowed hard, trying not to compare.
As expected, mama's catering was flawless and everything was going smoothly. What could go wrong?
The music swelled as Olivia and her father walked down the aisle. Everyone gasped at how beautiful she looked, from her dress with beaded pearls to her veil that floated around her.
Guests leaned closer, some whispering in admiration, others dabbing their teary eyes. Even though Olivia was the person that made others bully me in highschool, I couldn’t help but marvel at how much of a beautiful bride she made.
Zac stood at the alter, his black tuxedo, a perfect fit
I haven't seen him in years but he was way more handsome than the last time I saw him. He had grown a beard and his once boyish features were now carved into the kind of handsomeness that made girls drool.
My stomach twisted.
Back in highschool, I had the biggest crush on him and I used to write his name with little hearts on the margin of my book, dreaming of the day he’d notice me. Olivia found out about my crush and in true Olivia fashion, she made sure the entire school knew. The teasing that followed was merciless. They called me to plain Jane. I wore thick glasses that slid down my nose and a mouth full of shiny braces. To make it all worse, I was still in a training bra when most of the other girls were blossoming into womanhood.
The school was filled with rich kids who wore designer clothes and had European summers. I didn’t belong there. I was only there on a scholarship, a reminder to everyone that I wasn’t one of them. I was the awkward nerdy girl who never fit in.
Over the years, life had been good to me. I met Nathan, the love of my life in college, I landed a job with a big shot tech company, one that gave me stability and assurance that my future children would live a better life than I did.
Standing there in my green dress with Nathan’s presence by my side, I knew I had built a life I could be proud of and nothing was ever going to jeopardize it.
The pastor lifted his bible.
“Dear beloved, we are gathered here today to witness the Union of Zac and Olivia in holy matrimony”
Every pair of eyes were fixed on the altar.
Olivia stood radiant beside Zac, the perfect couple.
As the pastor's words filled the air, I noticed the subtle change in Zac’s expression. His jaw tightened. It was small, barely noticeable but I knew Zac. From all those years of watching him from across my seat in class, I could tell when something was wrong.
Nathan squeezed my hand and gave me a small smile. In a couple of months, we’d be the ones exchanging vows. My heart softened at the thought but my attention was dragged back to the altar where Zac’s Adam's apple bobbed.
The pastor turned to Zac, his voice solemn now.
“Zac, do you take Olivia to be your lawfully wedded wife? To have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, for as long as you both shall live?”
Everyone went silent as they waited for the inevitable yes. Olivia’s smile didn’t waver as she waited for his answer.
Seconds stretched into minutes. A few awkward coughs scattered through the crowd and Olivia’s smile quickly morphed into panic.
“I can’t marry you,”
Zac's words sliced through the garden like a sharp knife. The whispers turned into a low murmur, everyone sharing their disbelief. The cameras that had been recording the fairytale wedding quietly, zoomed in, ensuring they captured the moment from every angle.
The pastor froze, his bible still open, the wedding rings glistening.
“Zac, what do you mean?” Olivia asked, her voice trembling
Never in a million guesses would I have thought this was how the wedding was going to go. Even though Olivia was one of my least favorite people, my heart broke for her. No one deserved to be humiliated like this in front of the whole world on her wedding day.
“I can’t marry you, Olivia. I’m in love with someone else.”
The next day, I decided to get newspapers from my parents house. Papa kept records of old newspapers at home, I was certain I was going to find something that would be of help. Mr Vincent helped me pick them up and I spent the afternoon going through each newspaper.According to the newspapers, Zac’s father and Mr Burke were best friends. They went to the same college and started up their business almost at the same time. Mr Burke's business was doing really well. He manufactured home appliances and in no time, he became a millionaire. Zac’s father on the other hand was struggling. His parents used all they had left to pay for his tuition fees in hopes that when he was done with college, he’d get a good job and he can support them financially. Mr Gonzales decided to borrow some money from Mr Burke to start up another business. No one believed in tech companies at that time but in less than a year, Mr Gonzales had done really well for himself. Bigger telecommunications companie
When Nate left, I was left alone with my thoughts. We spoke about what our plans for the future were. He suggested I grant a media outlet an interview and let them know the truth. Some people were going to believe me, some weren’t but according to Nate, it would help us move on. He didn’t care if Zac came to tell the truth or not. He promised to stick by me through it all. Now, I wasn’t bothered about clearing my name anymore though I didn't make it known to Nate. I was in danger, Olivia and her father were probably going to kill me because of Zac. It didn’t matter what my truth was, those people were ruthless. Zac speculated that Mr Burke could have killed his father. The late Mr Gonzales was a very healthy man, he was never in and out of the hospital. One day, he came home from a meeting, feeling really sick. Mrs Gonzales assumed he was just tired from the day's work. By midnight, it got worse, he was writhing in pain. By the time he was taken to the hospital, he was pronounced
I couldn’t get him out of my head. His breath, his smell, his eyes, everything. We avoided each other. I was scared of what was going to happen if we were left alone in a room. I had made so many mistakes in my life but giving into my desires with Zac was going to be one of the costliest and worst ones.I couldn’t cheat on Nate who was sitting across me now. Security around the house was really tight so Nate couldn’t come visit as often. He was searched before entering the house. Now, we were seated at the gazebo in the garden. We barely said anything to each other, we were just staring into space. My heart was laden with the guilt of wanting another man. Could I be upset with Nate, really? Maybe he could tell I was attracted to Zac and he just wanted to be sure I had done nothing. “Jane,” Nate looked at me finally. “I don’t know where to start. I just feel like I’ve been apologizing a lot lately. I promised you I’ll change but I haven’t. I should have stood up to my family, y
“Jane,” Zac started, his voice solemn. “I’m so sorry you’re caught up in all of this.”I was still riled up from what I had just seen and heard. My heart was about to jump out of my chest and my eyes were darting all over, looking for any sign of danger. “Zac, you have to give these people what they want.” I pleaded. “Your mom was right. They aren’t going to stop until they get what they want.” “I know,” he sighed. “The same thing happened to my father. If I don’t end it now, it’s going to be a cycle,” “What are you talking about?” I asked as I adjusted myself. We were now in the car, waiting for Mr Vincent. Zac didn’t know what to do with the man in black, he couldn’t hand him over to the police, at least not yet. If he did, Mr Burke would know we were onto him. “Many years ago, my father worked with Mr Burke. Things went south and the feud began. You see, Mr Burke was trying to get me to work with him but I refused. He’s trying to get back at me,”My face twisted in disgu
The intruder was a man in his mid thirties. Mr Vincent and some of the security guards were able to catch him before he ran away. Now, he was tied up in an empty warehouse. My heart raced as we walked into it. Zac didn’t want me to be involved in it but I was insistent. I was tired of being in the dark and being treated like a child. “You can wait here,” Zac said as soon as we were at the entrance “No,” I frowned. “Remember you promised to show me everything or else I’m going to run away.”Zac sighed. Ever since I started avoiding him, he had been trying to get my attention. He’d get me books but I won’t accept them. He'd play a movie he knew I’d like on the tv but I’d pretend to be busy. I liked how he was doting on me, he was giving me the attention I’ve always wanted. He took my hands into his as we walked in. I gasped at the sight of the man. His face was swollen and bloodied from all the beatings he had received. “Are you okay?” Zac turned to me, worriedly I nodded. I s
Nothing much had changed within the past forty eight hours except that Zac had made a million calls and we had quite a number of security around the house. In the past, I’ve been told about how dangerous rich people lived but I never imagined I'd be in that position. The security watched me like a hawk, scared someone might hurt me. It was all too much. No one was allowed to contact me, including Nate. “Zac what’s going on?” I asked, my brows furrowedEver since he told me I felt nothing for him, we had been avoiding each other. Our conversations were short and polite and even when he tried to engage me further, I simply cut it off. The best thing was to reduce the amount of time I spent with him. At first, I thought I could just be friends with him but that wasn’t an option. You can’t be just friends with someone who made your heart beat fast, someone who you wanted to kiss you. Asides that, I had to respect my relationship with Nate. Things were rocky between us but it didn’t
