LOGINI sat frozen, my fingers tangled with Nathan’s. The wedding that was once organized had turned into a scene out of a movie.
What had gotten into Zac?
“Zac, what the fuck are you talking about?” Olivia asked, her beautiful makeup now ruined by tears.
“I’m sorry, I just can’t.”
“Have you lost your mind, Zac?” Olivia’s father demanded, his fists curled into a ball. The veins in his neck bulged as though he could explode at any moment.
“I’m in love with someone else, and we’ve been together for a while now,” Zac confessed.
More gasps erupted from the guest. My hands flew to my chest, hoping this was all a part of the wedding or some stupid joke.
“You know better not to humiliate my daughter.” Olivia’s father growled, his tone low and dangerous. “Have you forgotten what happened years ago?”
Olivia crumpled to her knees. Her chief bridesmaid and mother rushed forward to comfort her.
“How dare you?” She screamed, her voice raw with pain. “After all these years? After all I’ve done for you? What does she have that I don’t?”
Zac's face hardened. “I love her so much, Liv. I can’t let go. She is here.”
The audacity of men! I never thought of Zac as somehow who could bring the girl he was cheating with to his own wedding. How disgusting of him.
Gasps filled the air as some guests rose from their seats, others whispering into each other's ears furiously.
Guests twisted in their seats, eyes darting from face to face as though the guilty woman might confess.
“Who is she?” Someone hissed.
“Do you know her?” Another man asked, craning his neck.
Every young woman became a suspect.
“Can you believe this?” Nathan asked, shaking his head in disappointment. “What a mess!”
I sighed. The fact that Zac disrupted his wedding to confess his love for the mystery woman meant that he was really in love with her, and they had probably been together for years.
My eyes scanned the room, looking for whom the lady could be. Could it be a bridesmaid?
“Where the fuck is she?” Olivia screamed as she yanked off one of her glittering heels, using it as a weapon.
“I swear to God, I’ll kill her!” she spat.
Zac stepped down from the altar, Olivia following behind him. Everyone’s eyes were glued to his every step.
I swallowed hard as he walked to the back of the room. For a split second, our eyes met, and I wondered if he recognized me.
Around us, conversations died as Zac got closer to the back row where Nathan and I sat.
Nathan’s hand tightened around mine possessively. I looked around me, searching for anyone who might fit the role of Zac's lover. There was a young woman whose face was buried in her palm, surely, it had to be her.
But Zac didn’t glance in her direction.
His eyes were now fixed on mine and I could feel my heart slam violently against my ribs.
Zac stopped in front of me and I could feel hundreds of eyes boring jokes into me.
I turned to Nathan, who shared the same confused look as me.
For a moment, Zac said nothing. An angry Olivia was ready to pounce on me.
“It’s you, Jane,” he said. “It has always been you.”
The room erupted in shouts, gasps and curses but all I could hear was the pounding of my heart. Nathan slipped his hand from mine as if I was dirt.
A glittering heel flew at me but I ducked just in time. Olivia shrieked as the bridesmaids held her back from tearing me apart.
“Nathan,” I rasped as my eyes got teary. “He’s lying. I swear to you, Zac is lying!”
I turned to Zac. “Is this some stupid prank? I haven’t seen you since high school. What the hell are you doing?”
Zac sighed. “Baby, you can drop the act now. Everyone knows about us, we can finally be together just like we’ve always wanted.”
“Jane?” Olivia’s voice rang through the air. “Plain Jane? I didn’t recognize you, you finally got rid of the braces and fixed your ugly face. You stupid bitch! I’ve always known you wanted to be me, you’ve always wanted what I had, but I didn’t know you would go this far.”
Olivia’s words pierced through my heart and once again, I was a timid sixteen-year-old. I wanted to yell at her that it's Jane Ackerman, not plain Jane.
“He’s lying,” I told her, my voice shaky.
With a sudden cry, she lunged forward and slapped me hard across the face.
My cheeks burned instantly and the tears I'd been trying to hold back dropped. Nathan flinched but didn’t move to shield or comfort me. My sweet Nathan
“I can’t believe you brought me here to humiliate me,” Nathan’s voice was low, but it carried so much pain.
“Nathan, please..”
“Don’t,” he raised his hand. “Is this why you never stopped talking about Zac and Olivia? You mentioned how much they bullied you and I thought you had moved past it, not knowing you had an evil plan. Was this why you looked them up on I*******m?”
The crowd gasped. Shame burned hotter than the slap.
It was true that I searched for Zac and Olivia on I*******m, but that was ages ago, and they weren’t the only ones I searched for. Wasn’t it normal to look up old schoolmates?
I searched for mama in the crowd? She was the only person that would believe me, but I didn’t find her.
“Jane, you can stop pretending,” Zac said, his tone low and confident.
He pulled his phone from his suit pocket. “If you won’t admit it, then I’ll show them myself.”
Everyone circled the room as Zac held his phone high. “We’ve been together for months. Every call and message are right here.
He slid his thumb across the call icon and in a few seconds, the shrill buzz of my phone echoed. All eyes turned to me.
With trembling hands, I reached for my phone.
Incoming call: My Lover
“You lying bitch!” Olivia screamed.
Nathan’s face went pale, his jaw tightening.
“I didn’t save it like that! I didn’t have his number!” My voice shook violently, tears blurring my vision. “He must have changed it somehow!”
The crowd erupted, most of them shouting curses at me, the others struggling to see my phone.
I wanted to scream that I was being set up, but it seemed like the more I tried, the more I failed.
I shut my eyes and prayed that this was all a nightmare.
The next day, I decided to get newspapers from my parents house. Papa kept records of old newspapers at home, I was certain I was going to find something that would be of help. Mr Vincent helped me pick them up and I spent the afternoon going through each newspaper.According to the newspapers, Zac’s father and Mr Burke were best friends. They went to the same college and started up their business almost at the same time. Mr Burke's business was doing really well. He manufactured home appliances and in no time, he became a millionaire. Zac’s father on the other hand was struggling. His parents used all they had left to pay for his tuition fees in hopes that when he was done with college, he’d get a good job and he can support them financially. Mr Gonzales decided to borrow some money from Mr Burke to start up another business. No one believed in tech companies at that time but in less than a year, Mr Gonzales had done really well for himself. Bigger telecommunications companie
When Nate left, I was left alone with my thoughts. We spoke about what our plans for the future were. He suggested I grant a media outlet an interview and let them know the truth. Some people were going to believe me, some weren’t but according to Nate, it would help us move on. He didn’t care if Zac came to tell the truth or not. He promised to stick by me through it all. Now, I wasn’t bothered about clearing my name anymore though I didn't make it known to Nate. I was in danger, Olivia and her father were probably going to kill me because of Zac. It didn’t matter what my truth was, those people were ruthless. Zac speculated that Mr Burke could have killed his father. The late Mr Gonzales was a very healthy man, he was never in and out of the hospital. One day, he came home from a meeting, feeling really sick. Mrs Gonzales assumed he was just tired from the day's work. By midnight, it got worse, he was writhing in pain. By the time he was taken to the hospital, he was pronounced
I couldn’t get him out of my head. His breath, his smell, his eyes, everything. We avoided each other. I was scared of what was going to happen if we were left alone in a room. I had made so many mistakes in my life but giving into my desires with Zac was going to be one of the costliest and worst ones.I couldn’t cheat on Nate who was sitting across me now. Security around the house was really tight so Nate couldn’t come visit as often. He was searched before entering the house. Now, we were seated at the gazebo in the garden. We barely said anything to each other, we were just staring into space. My heart was laden with the guilt of wanting another man. Could I be upset with Nate, really? Maybe he could tell I was attracted to Zac and he just wanted to be sure I had done nothing. “Jane,” Nate looked at me finally. “I don’t know where to start. I just feel like I’ve been apologizing a lot lately. I promised you I’ll change but I haven’t. I should have stood up to my family, y
“Jane,” Zac started, his voice solemn. “I’m so sorry you’re caught up in all of this.”I was still riled up from what I had just seen and heard. My heart was about to jump out of my chest and my eyes were darting all over, looking for any sign of danger. “Zac, you have to give these people what they want.” I pleaded. “Your mom was right. They aren’t going to stop until they get what they want.” “I know,” he sighed. “The same thing happened to my father. If I don’t end it now, it’s going to be a cycle,” “What are you talking about?” I asked as I adjusted myself. We were now in the car, waiting for Mr Vincent. Zac didn’t know what to do with the man in black, he couldn’t hand him over to the police, at least not yet. If he did, Mr Burke would know we were onto him. “Many years ago, my father worked with Mr Burke. Things went south and the feud began. You see, Mr Burke was trying to get me to work with him but I refused. He’s trying to get back at me,”My face twisted in disgu
The intruder was a man in his mid thirties. Mr Vincent and some of the security guards were able to catch him before he ran away. Now, he was tied up in an empty warehouse. My heart raced as we walked into it. Zac didn’t want me to be involved in it but I was insistent. I was tired of being in the dark and being treated like a child. “You can wait here,” Zac said as soon as we were at the entrance “No,” I frowned. “Remember you promised to show me everything or else I’m going to run away.”Zac sighed. Ever since I started avoiding him, he had been trying to get my attention. He’d get me books but I won’t accept them. He'd play a movie he knew I’d like on the tv but I’d pretend to be busy. I liked how he was doting on me, he was giving me the attention I’ve always wanted. He took my hands into his as we walked in. I gasped at the sight of the man. His face was swollen and bloodied from all the beatings he had received. “Are you okay?” Zac turned to me, worriedly I nodded. I s
Nothing much had changed within the past forty eight hours except that Zac had made a million calls and we had quite a number of security around the house. In the past, I’ve been told about how dangerous rich people lived but I never imagined I'd be in that position. The security watched me like a hawk, scared someone might hurt me. It was all too much. No one was allowed to contact me, including Nate. “Zac what’s going on?” I asked, my brows furrowedEver since he told me I felt nothing for him, we had been avoiding each other. Our conversations were short and polite and even when he tried to engage me further, I simply cut it off. The best thing was to reduce the amount of time I spent with him. At first, I thought I could just be friends with him but that wasn’t an option. You can’t be just friends with someone who made your heart beat fast, someone who you wanted to kiss you. Asides that, I had to respect my relationship with Nate. Things were rocky between us but it didn’t
