It took some time to get through Thomas’s schoolwork, but we finally finished it. Afterward, we sat together and talked about his life in the pack and what he liked to do. I completely forgot about my suitcases. The unpacking could wait until tomorrow. Nyx looked through my eyes as Thomas rambled on. “Does this kid ever stop talking?” she grumbled. “He’s just excited,” I thought back, suppressing a laugh. “You know how kids are. The ones I work with back home talk even faster than he does.” Nyx let out a dramatic groan. “Don’t remind me.” She plopped back down in my mind. I focused back on Thomas, who was staring at me with a curious smile. “You were just talking to your wolf, wasn’t you?” he asked. “What’s her name?” “Her name is Nyx,” I said. “What color is her fur?” I went still. Only four people in the world knew the truth about Nyx, and I wasn’t comfortable sharing that details with a kid I just met, let alone anyone else in this pack. “You know, buddy, most wolves don’t like it when you ask them that,” I said, leaning back in my chair. Thomas tilted his head. “Why?” “Because your wolf is your ultimate weapon and your closest secret,” I explained, using the same gentle tone I used with the kids back home. “When I train the youth in human form, I always remind them that they won’t get their wolves until they are teenagers. But they still need to learn how to fight and protect themselves before that day comes.” Thomas’s eyes went wide. “You train the youth wolves? How old are they?” “I’ve trained kids from age six and up,” I replied. “Younger than me,” he whispered, looking amazed. “Yeah. In my uncle’s pack, some of the kids lost their families to rogue attacks or were abandoned. I teach them the basics. That way, if a rogue ever breaches the borders and they are completely alone, they know how to defend themselves or find a safe place to hide.” Thomas went quiet, the wheels turning in his little brain. Then, he looked up at me with a serious expression. “I wish I could train. I hate feeling helpless whenever the borders get attacked.” “You’re the future second-in-command,” I smiled. “You’ll learn when you’re older. Your dad will train you.” Thomas pouted, looking out the window. “Dad won’t train me. He only focuses on Kaelen. He thinks I’m just the baby of the family. He’d never let me on the field.” My heart ached for him. It was clear he wanted to be strong like his older brother, but Alpha Silas was keeping him sheltered. Probably to protect him. Still, every werewolf child needed to know how to fight. “Tell you what,” I said, leaning closer. “I have plenty of free time while I’m here. I can show you a few self-defense moves. You definitely need them.” Thomas turned back to me, his face lighting up. “You would really do that? Seriously?” “Yeah. But it has to be our secret. We do it when no one else is around.” “Deal!” Thomas grinned. “Mum hates it whenever I try to do anything physical anyway.” A cold prickle of resentment washed over me at the word Mum, but I forced myself to stay calm. Thomas noticed the sudden shift in my mood. His eyes softened, studying my face. “Is it weird to you that I call her Mum?” I cleared my throat, feeling Nyx edge closer in my mind. I didn’t want to lie to the kid. “A little bit,” I admitted honestly. “I haven’t seen her in so long. Even when I hear the word, it sounds foreign to me.” I truly didn’t know if the title meant anything to her anymore, especially coming from me. “When was the last time you saw her?” Thomas pressed. “Nosy little wolf,” Nyx muttered. “About two weeks ago,” I told him. “But before that? It had been years.” Thomas stared at me, trying to process what that meant. He opened his mouth to say something else, but suddenly his eyes glazed over as a mind-link cut him off. A moment later, he focused back on me and slid out of his chair. “Dad just linked me,” Thomas said. “It’s time to get ready for dinner.” I stood up, my stomach instantly knotting. Thomas walked to the door and looked back over his shoulder. “Dinner is in a few minutes. I’m going to go change into a clean shirt, and then I’ll come back to knock for you so we can go up together.” “See you in a bit,” I said. Once the door clicked shut, I stood rooted to the spot. Having dinner with my mother was stressful enough, but doing it alongside her new Alpha husband and his family felt entirely overwhelming. A sharp chime sounded from my phone. I walked over to the desk and picked it up. Three text messages were waiting for me. One from Wes, one from Carmen, and one from Uncle Victor. They all wanted to know if I had arrived safely and how things were going with my mother. I typed out a quick, identical reply to all three: Arrived safely. The pack house is huge. Heading up to a family dinner now with my mom, Alpha Silas, and his kids. Wish me luck. I put the phone face down, knowing they would reply immediately, but I didn’t have time to text. I needed to get ready, and my anxiety was through the roof. Even Nyx was pacing nervously in my head. I rushed into the private bathroom, stripped out of my clothes, and took the fastest shower of my life. Part of me desperately wanted to pull the bedcovers over my head and hide there for the next month. I absolutely did not want to be the center of attention tonight. I wrapped a towel around myself, walked back into the bedroom, and unzipped my first suitcase. I opted for something simple: a casual t-shirt, dark jeans, and flat shoes. There was no reason to dress up. This wasn’t a formal gala. I quickly pulled my red hair into a neat ponytail just as a knock sounded on the door. Thomas walked in, wearing a fresh shirt and clean jeans. “Ready?” he asked. I forced a smile and nodded. “Yeah. Let’s go.” “It’s just going to be you, me, Mum, and Dad,” Thomas explained as we walked out into the hall. “Kaelen has border patrol tonight. He never skips his shifts, but I have a feeling Dad is going to be furious anyway. He specifically ordered Kaelen to be at this dinner.” I blinked. So the brooding older brother had skipped out on my welcome dinner just to avoid me. Great. He clearly despised my presence here. “I don’t think he hates us,” Nyx chimed in thoughtfully. “He’s the future Alpha. He has duties to maintain.” I ignored her, but she just chuckled. “Look on the bright side. Do you really want to be staring at that gorgeous face through an entire meal while I try not to rip our mother’s throat out?” A small frown tugged at my lips. I shook my head to clear the thought and looked back down at Thomas. “Come on,” Thomas urged, tugging my hand. “I’m starving.” My own appetite was completely gone. The thought of sitting across from my mother made my stomach drop. I had a bad feeling about this dinner. Something felt off, and I knew it was going to center around me. Taking a deep, steadying breath, I stepped out of the room and closed the door behind me. Here goes nothing. “I’m right here,” Nyx whispered supportively. “If she starts acting like a bitch, I’ve got your back.” Knowing my wolf was standing with me was the only thing keeping me moving down the hall.ElaraKaelen’s shadow completely swallowed me.He was so close that his heat felt like a physical weight, pressing against my skin and making every nerve ending tingle. His hand was resting firmly against the glass right beside my ear, trapping me in the narrow space between his solid chest and the windowsill. The rich, suffocating scent of pine and winter rain swirled around us, dizzying my senses and sending my pulse into a frantic, chaotic race."I... I don't know what you're talking about," I stammered, my voice barely a whisper. I forced my hands to stay flat against my sides, refusing to let him see how badly my fingers were trembling. "Your political future has nothing to do with me, Kaelen. You're my stepbrother.""We aren't blood, Elara," Kaelen rumbled, his deep voice dropping into a rough, gravelly register that vibrated straight through my bones. He leaned down a fraction of an inch, his burning blue eyes boring directly into my soul. "And you didn't answer my question. Wh
KaelenI had spent the last five hours drowning in the pack’s deep digital archives, trying to pull the original intake reports from when Susan first arrived at our territory. But every single file attached to her name before her marriage to my father was encrypted under a high-level Alpha clearance code that even I couldn't bypass yet. Someone had intentionally scrubbed her digital trail, and it only made me more certain that she was running from something massive. But the moment I stepped into the foyer and saw Elara, all the frustration in my head evaporated, replaced by a fierce, driving possessiveness."Elara," I rasped, my voice sounding rough even to my own ears.I closed the distance between us in three long strides, stopping right in her personal space. Her sweet strawberry-and-cream scent hit me like a physical blow, wrapping around my senses and making Lou claw at the edges of my control. I looked down at her, tracking the frantic beat of the pulse fluttering against the de
ElaraMy fingers trembled as I unzipped my emerald sweater, throwing it onto the edge of the bed. I paced the length of my bedroom, the adrenaline from the creek still making my blood sing."Did you feel that, Elara?" Nyx whispered, her voice uncharacteristically soft, almost reverent. "When Lou touched our chest... it didn’t just feel like a random spark. It felt like finding a piece of ourselves we didn't even know we lost.""I felt it," I admitted silently, stopping by the balcony doors to look out at the dark tree line.My skin still tingled where Kaelen’s shoulder had brushed mine in front of my mother. The raw, heavy possessiveness he had displayed shielding me from her venom, threatening her with the pack elders was unlike anything I had ever experienced. It was thrilling, but it terrified me. Why was a man who barely knew me ready to burn down his own family dynamic just to protect my peace?"Because he’s a real Alpha," Nyx murmured, settling down in the shadows of my mind. "A
KaelenThe electric current of the mate bond was still buzzing violently under my skin. Having her midnight-black wolf lean her head against my shoulder by the creek had been absolute heaven. Lou was practically purring in the back of my mind, completely drunk on her strawberry-and-cream scent. But the heavy, rushed footsteps echoing down the eastern trail destroyed the moment.I stood firmly in front of Elara’s massive black wolf form, my silver-gray shoulders rigid, eyes locked onto the dark tree line. Through our forced, rough link, I kept my mental voice tight and urgent. “Move, Elara. Now.”Behind me, I heard the soft, rapid rustle of her shifting back into her human form. She scrambled into the bushes where she had hidden her clothes. I turned my back to give her privacy, walking a few dominant paces forward to meet the intruder before they could round the bend of the creek.I shifted back behind a thick oak tree, rapidly pulling on my gym shorts. By the time I stepped back into
ElaraThe lock on my bedroom door clicked into place with a definitive, heavy snap. I sank against the wood, my knees trembling as I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding since I entered the penthouse."Magnificent," I whispered to the empty room.Kaelen had called Nyx magnificent. He had looked at me with those burning, intense blue eyes and told me I shouldn't have to fight my battles alone. In my mind, Nyx rolled over on her back, her massive paws stretching out as she let out a deeply satisfied, rumbling purr. "I told you he was eye candy, but wow. An Alpha-blood male standing up to a Luna for us? My heart is doing backflips, Elara.""Stop it," I muttered, pacing across the plush rug toward the window. "He's our stepbrother, Nyx. This attraction is dangerous. It’s messy. And why is he pushing my mother so hard? He’s going to cause a massive rift in this house.""He's doing it because he cares," Nyx pointed out, her violet eyes turning serious as she sat up. "He saw the sil
KaelenThe grand dining hall became so quiet that the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like cracks of thunder.Susan’s teacup rattled violently against its saucer as she set it down. Her face drained of color, her eyes darting between her husband and me. "Kaelen, that is completely uncalled for," she whispered, her voice tight with a mixture of panic and boiling defensive rage. "My past with my daughter is a private family matter.""It stops being a private matter when it affects the security of this pack," I retorted, my voice steady, cold, and dripping with an authority that made my father look up from his papers.Inside my mind, Lou was snarling, his teeth bared right at Susan. He wanted to rip the truth out of her throat. I kept my eyes fixed on Elara. She was sitting perfectly rigid, her hands clenched into fists in her lap, her bright blue eyes wide with a mix of shock and quiet terror. She hadn't expected me to push her mother into a corner like thi
Elara I stared out the window, watching my uncle pack the trunk of the car. I let out a slow sigh and looked around my empty bedroom. I had lived with my uncle for the last nine years, ever since I was eleven. Now, at twenty, I was leaving the safety of his pack to go visit my mother. As a werewo
KaelenI stormed out of the pack house, Jayden hurried right behind me. My head was spinning. My stepsister was my fated mate. But what made my blood boil was that she hadn’t reacted to me at all. There was no recognition in her eyes, no shock, nothing. In my mind, Lou had gone completely silent. H
Elara The journey was long, but the music worked its magic and I managed to sleep for most of it. The taxi driver tapped on the glass partition to wake me when we were five minutes away. As we entered the territory, a vibrant pack town opened up before us. Rows of beautiful houses lined the street
Kaelen I watched the last of the pack members clear out of the training grounds. I ran these sessions twice a week. Mostly I trained the elite warriors, but lately, my father had me teaching the entire pack. It was just one of the many ways he was preparing me to take over as the next Alpha. I lo
