LOGINKaelen
I stormed out of the pack house, Jayden hurried right behind me. My head was spinning. My stepsister was my fated mate.
But what made my blood boil was that she hadn’t reacted to me at all. There was no recognition in her eyes, no shock, nothing.
In my mind, Lou had gone completely silent. He had been so ecstatic the second he smelled her, but her total lack of reaction had broken his spirit. He felt rejected, like his own mate didn’t want him. I felt his heartbreak sharp in my chest.
How the hell did she not recognize us? The question pounded against my skull every time her beautiful face flashed in my mind. There had to be a reason. There had to be.
“Kaelen,” Jayden called out, snapping me out of my trance. “You okay, man?”
I cleared my throat and nodded stiffly. I wasn’t going to tell a soul about the bond until Elara knew first. “Yeah. I’m fine.”
“So,” Jayden smirked, jogged a step to keep pace. “What do you think of her?”
I stared at him blankly. “Who?”
Jayden frowned. “Elara. Your new stepsister.”
I shrugged, forcing my voice to stay completely flat. “She seems nice.”
It was a total lie. What I actually wanted to say was that she was the most intoxicating, breathtaking woman I had ever seen. In my head, Lou gave a sad whimper. He wanted to be near her, but we couldn’t do anything until we figured out why the bond was completely one-sided.
I looked ahead and saw the warriors waiting for me on the field. I turned to Jayden. “Get the equipment out. I’ll start the warriors on their warm-ups.”
Jayden nodded and ran off toward the shed.
I called the squad into formation, barking out commands for advanced combat drills. I needed to focus. I needed to get Elara out of my head, even if it was just for an hour.
Looking at the men and women before me, a surge of pride cut through my frustration. The Crescent Warriors were famous for a reason. This elite unit was my hand-picked squad. They were the ones I sent on the most dangerous stealth and intelligence missions. They knew how to track, how to fight, and how to kill without asking questions.
My father had formed this specific division when he was my age, and I was continuing the legacy. These were the people who would help me run this pack when I took over as Alpha.
Suddenly, a giggle from the sidelines caught my attention. I looked over and noticed a group of she-wolves lounging near the benches, watching us train.
My brow furrowed. “You need to leave,” I shouted across the field.
A few of the women started flirting, trying to catch the eyes of my fighters, while the female warriors in my squad just rolled their eyes. This was a daily distraction, and I wasn’t in the mood for it.
“You all have jobs to do,” I yelled, taking a sharp, dominant step toward them to show I wasn’t playing around. “Clear out. Now.”
They quickly scrambled away, and I went back to pushing the warriors to their limits. I joined in on the drills, using the brutal physical exhaustion to burn out the thoughts of Elara that kept trying to take over my mind.
By the time training ended an hour later, the sun was setting. The field cleared out, and Jayden walked over to help me lock up the gear.
“Good workout,” he noted, wiping sweat from his face. He paused, studying me closely. “Kaelen, where is your head today?”
I kept my eyes on the equipment chest. “What do you mean?”
“It felt like you weren’t even here,” Jayden said, his eyes drilling into mine. “Your body was doing the motions, but your mind was miles away.”
My gaze automatically drifted back toward the massive pack house. Right now, my family was sitting down for the welcome dinner. They were eating, laughing, and getting to know Elara. The mere thought made my heart beat double-time.
“I’m fine,” I muttered.
Jayden looked over his shoulder at the house and sighed. “You know, you still have time to make it to the dinner. Lou might actually enjoy meeting your new sister.”
Sister. The word tasted like ash in my mouth.
“No,” I said, making my refusal absolute. I couldn’t face her yet. Not until I understood why she couldn’t feel me. “I can’t go anyway. We have patrol tonight. West border.”
Jayden frowned. “Shaun and I can handle the west border. If you want to go to the dinner”
A dark growl ripped from my throat, cutting him off. I couldn’t take the pressure anymore. “I don’t want to go!” I snapped, way too loudly.
Jayden’s eyes widened in surprise.
“Come on,” I muttered, shaking my head. “Let’s move. Shaun is waiting for us at the clearing.”
ElaraKaelen’s shadow completely swallowed me.He was so close that his heat felt like a physical weight, pressing against my skin and making every nerve ending tingle. His hand was resting firmly against the glass right beside my ear, trapping me in the narrow space between his solid chest and the windowsill. The rich, suffocating scent of pine and winter rain swirled around us, dizzying my senses and sending my pulse into a frantic, chaotic race."I... I don't know what you're talking about," I stammered, my voice barely a whisper. I forced my hands to stay flat against my sides, refusing to let him see how badly my fingers were trembling. "Your political future has nothing to do with me, Kaelen. You're my stepbrother.""We aren't blood, Elara," Kaelen rumbled, his deep voice dropping into a rough, gravelly register that vibrated straight through my bones. He leaned down a fraction of an inch, his burning blue eyes boring directly into my soul. "And you didn't answer my question. Wh
KaelenI had spent the last five hours drowning in the pack’s deep digital archives, trying to pull the original intake reports from when Susan first arrived at our territory. But every single file attached to her name before her marriage to my father was encrypted under a high-level Alpha clearance code that even I couldn't bypass yet. Someone had intentionally scrubbed her digital trail, and it only made me more certain that she was running from something massive. But the moment I stepped into the foyer and saw Elara, all the frustration in my head evaporated, replaced by a fierce, driving possessiveness."Elara," I rasped, my voice sounding rough even to my own ears.I closed the distance between us in three long strides, stopping right in her personal space. Her sweet strawberry-and-cream scent hit me like a physical blow, wrapping around my senses and making Lou claw at the edges of my control. I looked down at her, tracking the frantic beat of the pulse fluttering against the de
ElaraMy fingers trembled as I unzipped my emerald sweater, throwing it onto the edge of the bed. I paced the length of my bedroom, the adrenaline from the creek still making my blood sing."Did you feel that, Elara?" Nyx whispered, her voice uncharacteristically soft, almost reverent. "When Lou touched our chest... it didn’t just feel like a random spark. It felt like finding a piece of ourselves we didn't even know we lost.""I felt it," I admitted silently, stopping by the balcony doors to look out at the dark tree line.My skin still tingled where Kaelen’s shoulder had brushed mine in front of my mother. The raw, heavy possessiveness he had displayed shielding me from her venom, threatening her with the pack elders was unlike anything I had ever experienced. It was thrilling, but it terrified me. Why was a man who barely knew me ready to burn down his own family dynamic just to protect my peace?"Because he’s a real Alpha," Nyx murmured, settling down in the shadows of my mind. "A
KaelenThe electric current of the mate bond was still buzzing violently under my skin. Having her midnight-black wolf lean her head against my shoulder by the creek had been absolute heaven. Lou was practically purring in the back of my mind, completely drunk on her strawberry-and-cream scent. But the heavy, rushed footsteps echoing down the eastern trail destroyed the moment.I stood firmly in front of Elara’s massive black wolf form, my silver-gray shoulders rigid, eyes locked onto the dark tree line. Through our forced, rough link, I kept my mental voice tight and urgent. “Move, Elara. Now.”Behind me, I heard the soft, rapid rustle of her shifting back into her human form. She scrambled into the bushes where she had hidden her clothes. I turned my back to give her privacy, walking a few dominant paces forward to meet the intruder before they could round the bend of the creek.I shifted back behind a thick oak tree, rapidly pulling on my gym shorts. By the time I stepped back into
ElaraThe lock on my bedroom door clicked into place with a definitive, heavy snap. I sank against the wood, my knees trembling as I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding since I entered the penthouse."Magnificent," I whispered to the empty room.Kaelen had called Nyx magnificent. He had looked at me with those burning, intense blue eyes and told me I shouldn't have to fight my battles alone. In my mind, Nyx rolled over on her back, her massive paws stretching out as she let out a deeply satisfied, rumbling purr. "I told you he was eye candy, but wow. An Alpha-blood male standing up to a Luna for us? My heart is doing backflips, Elara.""Stop it," I muttered, pacing across the plush rug toward the window. "He's our stepbrother, Nyx. This attraction is dangerous. It’s messy. And why is he pushing my mother so hard? He’s going to cause a massive rift in this house.""He's doing it because he cares," Nyx pointed out, her violet eyes turning serious as she sat up. "He saw the sil
KaelenThe grand dining hall became so quiet that the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like cracks of thunder.Susan’s teacup rattled violently against its saucer as she set it down. Her face drained of color, her eyes darting between her husband and me. "Kaelen, that is completely uncalled for," she whispered, her voice tight with a mixture of panic and boiling defensive rage. "My past with my daughter is a private family matter.""It stops being a private matter when it affects the security of this pack," I retorted, my voice steady, cold, and dripping with an authority that made my father look up from his papers.Inside my mind, Lou was snarling, his teeth bared right at Susan. He wanted to rip the truth out of her throat. I kept my eyes fixed on Elara. She was sitting perfectly rigid, her hands clenched into fists in her lap, her bright blue eyes wide with a mix of shock and quiet terror. She hadn't expected me to push her mother into a corner like thi
ElaraMy heart was beating so loud I was terrified Thomas and Shaun would hear it over the noise of the bustling pack grounds. My fingers tightly gripped the hem of my loose top, forcing the fabric down against my ribs.He saw it.Kaelen had seen the silver scar. The one thing I kept hidden from th
Elara The journey was long, but the music worked its magic and I managed to sleep for most of it. The taxi driver tapped on the glass partition to wake me when we were five minutes away. As we entered the territory, a vibrant pack town opened up before us. Rows of beautiful houses lined the street
Kaelen I watched the last of the pack members clear out of the training grounds. I ran these sessions twice a week. Mostly I trained the elite warriors, but lately, my father had me teaching the entire pack. It was just one of the many ways he was preparing me to take over as the next Alpha. I lo
Elara I stared out the window, watching my uncle pack the trunk of the car. I let out a slow sigh and looked around my empty bedroom. I had lived with my uncle for the last nine years, ever since I was eleven. Now, at twenty, I was leaving the safety of his pack to go visit my mother. As a werewo
