‎As Christie and I walked through the main double doors into the school hallway, I looked around completely confused. Students were huddled in small groups everywhere, staring frantically down at their phones, whispering and murmuring to one another in hushed, excited tones.

‎"What is even happening?" I asked, almost in a whisper, clutching my backpack straps.

‎"I'm just as confused as you are," Christie replied, her eyes darting across the crowded corridor.

‎"Maya! Christie!"

‎I was still furious with Charles for what he did, and what made it worse was that he wasn't even budging on making an attempt to apologize or coax me. He was acting completely unfazed, as if tearing down an entire family empire was just part of his morning routine. ‎We sat together at the breakfast table the next morning, and I completely ignored Charles, refusing to even look his way while Christie chatted animatedly with my dad. ‎"There has been literally zero popular celebrity gossip today... the entire internet is just flooded with news about Jayce's family firm collapsing. It's so boring," Christie whined, scrolling endlessly through her phone. ‎"Well, that's because it's one of the largest corporate conglomerates here in Country Q," my dad replied calmly, taking a sip of his coffee. ‎"Oh... that reminds me of something," Christie chimed, her eyes lighting up with a mischievous spark. "Since Arthur and my dad are both single... why don't they just remarry?" ‎My dad choked i

‎"Maya! Christie!" ‎Chloe and Harper suddenly came running toward us, looking wide-eyed and breathless. ‎"What's happening?" I asked immediately, eager to know what had everyone talking. ‎"It's Jayce," Harper said, her voice dropping lower. ‎"What about Jayce?" Christie asked, crossing her arms defensively. ‎"Jayce's family firm just suffered a catastrophic collapse," Harper replied, her eyes wide. ‎"How could that possibly happen?" Christie asked, her jaw dropping in surprise. ‎"Their credit lines were frozen overnight,

‎"Christie, you don't have to sulk in your room forever. Get dressed, I'm waiting downstairs!" I called out, pausing for a moment by Christie’s bedroom door before walking down the grand staircase. ‎Charles was already sitting at the end of the long dining lounge, scrolling through his phone without even raising his head as I approached. ‎"Hi," I said simply, hoping for some acknowledgment. ‎Charles completely ignored me, not even blinking in my direction. ‎"Where's my dad?" I asked, trying to read the room and knowing full well that Charles was still furious with me over last night's lies. "Have you seen him?" ‎"No, I haven't," Charles answered flatly, his voice cold and detached, refusing to look at me for even a single second. ‎"Hi, Dad..." Christie grumbled, walking downstairs with a heavily sulking face, still bitter over the strict rules Charles had laid down last night. She crossed her arms, glaring at the coffee table. "We're ready. Aren't you taking us to school today,

‎"What am I going to do? What am I going to do?!" I repeated frantically, my hands gripping the steering wheel as I drove our car as fast as I safely could down the dark highway. ‎"What if Charles and my dad find out...?" I panicked, glancing over at Christie. ‎"Calm down, Maya. Stop panicking and let me think of something," Christie said, trying to steady her own breathing in the passenger seat. "We won't have to tell them a single thing unless they ask. And if they ask how Jayce got injured, we'll just tell them the truth. well, a version of it. We'll say Jace got overly drunk, stumbled near the poolside bar, and accidentally fell headfirst into a glass display." ‎"Is that honestly all you could come up with?" I asked, my voice shaking. ‎"Do you have a better idea?!" Christie fired back defensively. ‎I let out a heavy, stressed sigh and kept my eyes glued to the dark road ahead. ‎"We are in massive trouble if your dad finds out that Jace laid his hands on you, Maya," Christie

‎Christie burst straight into my room without even bothering to knock. ‎"Christie... I knew it was you," I complained, rolling my eyes as she stood in the doorway with a mischievous grin. ‎"Get dressed, Maya! We're going out tonight," Christie chimed with infectious excitement, tossing a silk wrap onto my bed. ‎"Where are we even going?" I asked curiously. ‎"We're going to the pool party Damien is hosting at his mansion, and you are coming with me. I am not going to sit back and let you live a boring life sulking in your room all weekend!" ‎"Yeah... yeah..." I muttered, though a small smile tugged at my lips. "I wasn't really going to say no anyway," I added, rolling my eyes dramatically as I walked over to my closet. ‎It was already getting dark by the time our car pulled up to Damien’s sprawling estate. The night air was warm, and as we stepped inside, the entire backyard was transformed. The massive pool area was lit with soft, glowing dim lights. People were laughing, s

‎"Hey guys, I hope you slept well," I said with a warm smile, walking closer to the lounge area and taking a seat on the soft plush sofa right next to my father. ‎"Urghh... don't even ask me that. My head is still spinning with a terrible hangover," Christie said dramatically, pressing the palms of her hands against her forehead as she groaned. ‎My father let out a soft laugh, giving me a reassuring look. "I slept like a baby, Maya." ‎Christie set her tea mug down on the glass table and turned her sharp eyes toward me. "It's still not cool that Maya has completely refused to get a boyfriend. I mean, look at Jayce! He's such a good guy, he's gentle, he's incredibly cute, and he comes from a wealthy, respectable family. What else could you possibly be looking for in a man, Maya?" ‎"I'm sorry to say this, sweetheart, but Christie is actually right," my dad chimed in softly, backing Christie up. "You've been carrying so much stress lately... you need someone supportive in your life."
