Chapter 3

Author: Chirpy Seven
Skyler's POV

We never made it to Camp Three.

The blizzard hit far sooner than anyone had expected. A deep rumble came from somewhere inside the mountain, like the growl of some enormous beast.

Mike's face went pale. "Avalanche! Everyone, down!"

The world seemed to turn upside down. A massive wall of snow crashed down from the ridge, roaring as it swept everything in its path away.

The blast knocked me off my feet. My ears rang violently as chunks of snow slammed into me, ice pouring down the collar of my jacket. My whole body convulsed from the cold.

It went on for some time before the first wave finally passed. I lay face-down in the snow, too stunned to move. It took me a few seconds to register that I was still alive.

"Amber!" I screamed.

Through the blowing snow, a figure staggered to her feet. It was her.

She was covered in snow, a thin streak of blood running down her face. She didn't run toward me. She ran toward Theo.

He was sprawled on the slope about 50 feet away, shivering violently. "Amber… Amber, my leg is cramping… I can't stand up…"

Amber ran to his side and dragged him into a sheltered spot out of the wind. "You're okay. You're okay."

She quickly examined him. "Are you hurt anywhere?"

"I can't feel anything…" he stuttered, his teeth chattering uncontrollably. "I'm freezing, Amber…"

Amber looked up and swept her gaze across the area. Then she spotted me—more precisely, the emergency bivy blanket wrapped around my body.

It was the last one the team had. All the others had been buried by the avalanche.

She strode toward me. I thought she was coming to pull me to safety, but she reached out and yanked the blanket from my shoulders.

My fingers tightened around it instinctively.

"Skyler, let go," she urged me, leaving no room for argument. "Theo's going hypothermic. He won't make it without it."

"What about me?"

My voice sounded hoarse and unfamiliar, even to my ears.

She paused. "You're in better shape. You can handle the cold better than he can."

She tore the blanket away from me, and a bone-deep cold immediately rushed in from every direction, as if I had been thrown alive into a freezer.

Amber wrapped the blanket around Theo, then crouched down and began unclipping the climbing rope from around my waist.

"What are you doing?" I questioned, actually panicking this time.

"I can only get one person out at a time."

She didn't even look at me as she swiftly unfastened the buckle. "This is the only rope we have left. Mike says there are crevasses below, and we have to stay roped up to cross them.

"Theo isn't strong enough. He won't make it across without the rope."

"And what about me?"

I seized her arm, my nails digging into the fabric of her jacket.

Amber finally looked at me. In it, I saw hesitation, guilt, and an unquestioning trust—the kind that said, "You're so capable. You'll be fine."

"Wait for rescue, Skyler."

She stood up and secured the climbing rope around Theo's waist. "Mike has already sent out a distress signal. The rescue team will be here within two hours, tops. You can make it. You always have."

She took hold of Theo's arm and turned toward the route down. The blowing snow soon swallowed her figure. I parted my lips, wanting to call her name, but the wind tore my voice to pieces.

Amber never looked back.

When the second avalanche hit, the snow beneath my feet collapsed with a deafening roar. Darkness swallowed me whole.

In the last moments I was conscious, I heard the dull thud of my body slamming into the ice wall. Once, twice, and thrice. Then, silence.

It was 22 degrees Fahrenheit below zero down there.

Amber said help would arrive in two hours. She said I could make it. Perhaps she had forgotten that I was an ordinary human capable of experiencing fear, cold, and death.

Skyler's POVAmber never appeared in my life again. Charlie told me she had quit her job at the research institute and left the city. No one knew where she went. Some said the desert. Others said the mountains. Wherever it was, it was somewhere remote and desolate.Theo also left. He went back to his hometown and got married. He probably still didn't know the full story of what happened. Maybe he did, but chose not to face it.It didn't matter anymore. Those people and those memories came and went like an avalanche. They came into my life with a force that shook everything, then disappeared beneath layers of ice so deep no one could ever reach them.I stayed in the city. I took photographs, retouched them, picked up the occasional commercial project, and sometimes held solo exhibitions.I moved my studio once, from downtown to an industrial park on the outskirts. It was three times the size, and the rent was half as much. There was a grove outside the window. During fall, the l

Skyler's POVThree months later, my outdoor photography collection was chosen for a citywide photography exhibition. The gallery was in the heart of downtown, busy with visitors coming and going.Charlie arrived early to help me set everything up. He was running back and forth, more nervous than I was. "Skyler, that photo of the snow mountain is hanging too far to the side!""It's fine, Charlie.""No! I'm getting the staff to reposition it!"I stopped him, laughing as I pressed a hand to his shoulder. "That's enough. Stop fussing."Tracy came, too. She stood quietly in a corner of the gallery, looking at the photographs on the walls. The one in front of her was the northern lights I had photographed in Nordvik.Bands of emerald light stretched across the night sky, while an endless white snowfield lay beneath them. She stared at it for a long time.By 3:00 pm, the gallery was getting crowded. I was talking to one of the curators when a figure at the entrance caught my eye.Amb

Skyler's POVA month later, I returned home from Nordvik. The frostbite on my fingers had mostly healed, and a new layer of skin had grown over the one on my left foot. The biggest change wasn't physical. It was the crevasse in my heart. It had finally closed.I did three things after coming back.First, I changed my phone number. Second, I moved. I left the apartment in the same part of the city where Amber and I had lived and moved to the other side of town.Third, I went back to work and buried myself in it.The first time Charlie saw me, he looked me up and down for a long while before sighing in relief. "Good. There's light in your eyes again."I landed a commercial photography project for a major outdoor brand. Our team worked overtime for two straight months.Every day, I stayed in the studio retouching photos until the early hours. When I got too tired, I would put my head down on the desk and sleep for a while.I was so busy I didn't have time to think about anything

Third-Person POVIt had been 20 days since Amber last heard from Skyler. Whenever she called, she got the same automated message. "The number you have dialed has been barred by the recipient."Her messages only ever came back with a red exclamation mark.Amber sat on the living room couch, staring at her phone screen, her finger hovering over it for a long time. Then, irritated, she tossed the phone aside. She stood up, only to pace back and forth across the room. She was upset that Skyler wouldn't answer her calls or give her a chance to explain. He had left without saying anything to her.She knew she was wrong. She shouldn't have taken his bivy blanket and climbing rope and given them to Theo. But everything had happened so fast. She had to make a choice.Skyler just happened to be the fittest man she had ever known. He had climbed three mountains above 13 thousand feet, and every time they did a fitness test, he left her far behind. She genuinely believed he could make it.

Skyler's POV186 miles north of the Arctic Circle was Tromgen, Nordvik. When the plane landed, infinite stretches of snow spread out beyond the window. But the snow here was different from the snow on that mountain. Here, it blanketed the roofs of little cabins like a thick, warm thick blanket.Tracy rented two small cabins facing the fjord, with a little path between them. She didn't stay in my cabin or make any effort to get closer.Every morning, she left breakfast outside my door, knocked twice, and left."Don't you need to work?" I asked her."I'm on a break. Every winter, I take a month off.""Do you come here every year?""Mm-hm. It's peaceful here."That was just the kind of person Tracy was. She didn't say much or do much. She simply stayed there in silence, like a rock that never moved. For the first few days, I didn't want to do anything. I curled up on the cabin rug under a blanket, watching the snow fall outside layer by layer. My body was still recovering. Fro

Skyler's POVI spent four days in the hospital. Amber never left my side. She sat in the chair beside my bed. Her eyes were swollen and red, her hair a mess. She looked as though she had aged ten years overnight. She held my hand and wouldn't stop apologizing. "I'm sorry, Skyler. I'm so sorry. I really thought you could make it. I thought the rescue team would arrive within two hours."I made the wrong call. It was my fault. I shouldn't have left you behind…"I never looked at her, not since the moment I woke up. It wasn't that I was deliberately giving her the cold shoulder. I just didn't know how to face her anymore.Should I smile or frown?Amber almost got me killed, yet she was also crying her eyes out for me.The next day, Charlie came to see me. When he pushed open the hospital room door, I saw that his eyes were red. His fingers were trembling, and so did his voice."Skyler…"I smiled at him. "I'm fine."He walked over to my bed and finally let the tears gather in hi
