Chapter 2

Author: Chirpy Seven
Skyler's POV

The next morning, the team broke camp and started climbing higher. At 19 thousand feet, the air was painfully thin. Every step felt like I was dragging a mountain behind me.

We split into three groups. I was in the second group, and Amber was originally supposed to be with us. But right before we set out, she switched groups.

"Theo's not doing well. I'm going to the third group to keep an eye on him," she told me. "Stay close to Mike. Don't fall behind."

I nodded.

All morning, all I could see of her was a distant figure behind us. She stayed beside Theo, steadying him now and then.

When we crossed a stretch of loose scree, Theo suddenly slipped and stumbled sideways. Amber grabbed his arm and pulled him back to safety.

Shaken, he breathed heavily and turned to her with a nervous smile. "If you hadn't been here, I would've gone straight down, Amber."

She smiled back, her voice patient and gentle. "Shorter steps. Make sure your footing is solid before you move. There's no need to rush."

Mike glanced back and frowned when he saw me. "Your girlfriend sure is something. Always looking out for everyone, huh?"

I didn't answer.

At noon, we stopped to rest beneath a rocky outcrop sheltered from the wind. I sat on a rock, chewing on a rock-hard ration bar.

Amber came over and handed me a cup of hot water. I took it and wrapped my hands around it.

"Theo was feeling the altitude a little earlier. He threw up twice."

She sat down beside me, frowning. "At this rate, going for the summit tomorrow could be dangerous for him."

"Then tell him to stay at camp and wait for us," I said.

She hesitated. "He came all this way just to reach the summit. It wouldn't be safe to leave him alone at camp, either."

"We can have a guide stay with him."

"We don't have enough guides," she said, then paused and looked at me tentatively. "How about… You wait for me at Camp Three? I'll take Theo back down to Camp Two, then come back up and summit with you."

I stopped chewing. "You want me to wait at Camp Three by myself?"

"It'll only be half a day," she said, patting the back of my hand. "There are tents and supplies at Camp Three. You'll be fine."

After a few seconds, I folded the wrapper from my ration bar and tucked it into my pocket. "No. I don't want to propose at camp. I want to do it at the summit."

Amber froze, then smiled. "Okay. We'll do it your way."

We kept climbing that afternoon. The sky grew darker by the minute. Clouds rolled in from the west. Heavy, gray clouds clamped over the mountain like a devouring monster.

Mike looked up for a long time, his expression grim.

"Captain Garcia, the clouds don't look right today. Based on what we've seen in previous years, there's a high chance a blizzard will follow. I suggest we make camp here and reassess tomorrow."

Amber nodded and was ready to order the team to set up camp.

Out of nowhere, Theo ran up from behind, panting. "Amber!"

His face was pale, and his lips had turned blue, but his eyes gleamed with excitement. "I just checked the weather forecast. It's supposed to be overcast the day after tomorrow and the day after that.

"Tomorrow morning is the only window we have, and it's only six hours! If we stop climbing today, we might miss it!"

Mike frowned. Amber hesitated.

"Amber." I tugged at her sleeve and reminded her, "Mike said the weather is unstable today."

"It's fine, Skyler!"

Theo suddenly turned to me, looking so earnestly hopeful yet desperate. "I've been reading a lot of climbing forums. Clouds like these don't always mean snow. And we're already at 19 thousand feet.

"Camp Three is only another 1300 feet up. It'll take two hours at most. If we miss this window, the whole trip could be for nothing!"

His words hit directly at Amber's hesitation. She looked at Theo, then up at the clouds overhead. "Keep going. We push on to Camp Three today."

Mike gave her a long look, but said nothing. I stayed in the middle of the group as we continued upward.

Those gray clouds slowly swallowed the last traces of sunlight.

Skyler's POVAmber never appeared in my life again. Charlie told me she had quit her job at the research institute and left the city. No one knew where she went. Some said the desert. Others said the mountains. Wherever it was, it was somewhere remote and desolate.Theo also left. He went back to his hometown and got married. He probably still didn't know the full story of what happened. Maybe he did, but chose not to face it.It didn't matter anymore. Those people and those memories came and went like an avalanche. They came into my life with a force that shook everything, then disappeared beneath layers of ice so deep no one could ever reach them.I stayed in the city. I took photographs, retouched them, picked up the occasional commercial project, and sometimes held solo exhibitions.I moved my studio once, from downtown to an industrial park on the outskirts. It was three times the size, and the rent was half as much. There was a grove outside the window. During fall, the l

Skyler's POVThree months later, my outdoor photography collection was chosen for a citywide photography exhibition. The gallery was in the heart of downtown, busy with visitors coming and going.Charlie arrived early to help me set everything up. He was running back and forth, more nervous than I was. "Skyler, that photo of the snow mountain is hanging too far to the side!""It's fine, Charlie.""No! I'm getting the staff to reposition it!"I stopped him, laughing as I pressed a hand to his shoulder. "That's enough. Stop fussing."Tracy came, too. She stood quietly in a corner of the gallery, looking at the photographs on the walls. The one in front of her was the northern lights I had photographed in Nordvik.Bands of emerald light stretched across the night sky, while an endless white snowfield lay beneath them. She stared at it for a long time.By 3:00 pm, the gallery was getting crowded. I was talking to one of the curators when a figure at the entrance caught my eye.Amb

Skyler's POVA month later, I returned home from Nordvik. The frostbite on my fingers had mostly healed, and a new layer of skin had grown over the one on my left foot. The biggest change wasn't physical. It was the crevasse in my heart. It had finally closed.I did three things after coming back.First, I changed my phone number. Second, I moved. I left the apartment in the same part of the city where Amber and I had lived and moved to the other side of town.Third, I went back to work and buried myself in it.The first time Charlie saw me, he looked me up and down for a long while before sighing in relief. "Good. There's light in your eyes again."I landed a commercial photography project for a major outdoor brand. Our team worked overtime for two straight months.Every day, I stayed in the studio retouching photos until the early hours. When I got too tired, I would put my head down on the desk and sleep for a while.I was so busy I didn't have time to think about anything

Third-Person POVIt had been 20 days since Amber last heard from Skyler. Whenever she called, she got the same automated message. "The number you have dialed has been barred by the recipient."Her messages only ever came back with a red exclamation mark.Amber sat on the living room couch, staring at her phone screen, her finger hovering over it for a long time. Then, irritated, she tossed the phone aside. She stood up, only to pace back and forth across the room. She was upset that Skyler wouldn't answer her calls or give her a chance to explain. He had left without saying anything to her.She knew she was wrong. She shouldn't have taken his bivy blanket and climbing rope and given them to Theo. But everything had happened so fast. She had to make a choice.Skyler just happened to be the fittest man she had ever known. He had climbed three mountains above 13 thousand feet, and every time they did a fitness test, he left her far behind. She genuinely believed he could make it.

Skyler's POV186 miles north of the Arctic Circle was Tromgen, Nordvik. When the plane landed, infinite stretches of snow spread out beyond the window. But the snow here was different from the snow on that mountain. Here, it blanketed the roofs of little cabins like a thick, warm thick blanket.Tracy rented two small cabins facing the fjord, with a little path between them. She didn't stay in my cabin or make any effort to get closer.Every morning, she left breakfast outside my door, knocked twice, and left."Don't you need to work?" I asked her."I'm on a break. Every winter, I take a month off.""Do you come here every year?""Mm-hm. It's peaceful here."That was just the kind of person Tracy was. She didn't say much or do much. She simply stayed there in silence, like a rock that never moved. For the first few days, I didn't want to do anything. I curled up on the cabin rug under a blanket, watching the snow fall outside layer by layer. My body was still recovering. Fro

  • Climbing for Love, Watching Her Stray   Chapter 5

Skyler's POVI spent four days in the hospital. Amber never left my side. She sat in the chair beside my bed. Her eyes were swollen and red, her hair a mess. She looked as though she had aged ten years overnight. She held my hand and wouldn't stop apologizing. "I'm sorry, Skyler. I'm so sorry. I really thought you could make it. I thought the rescue team would arrive within two hours."I made the wrong call. It was my fault. I shouldn't have left you behind…"I never looked at her, not since the moment I woke up. It wasn't that I was deliberately giving her the cold shoulder. I just didn't know how to face her anymore.Should I smile or frown?Amber almost got me killed, yet she was also crying her eyes out for me.The next day, Charlie came to see me. When he pushed open the hospital room door, I saw that his eyes were red. His fingers were trembling, and so did his voice."Skyler…"I smiled at him. "I'm fine."He walked over to my bed and finally let the tears gather in hi
