Chapter 5

Cortland

I can't stop thinking about Austin. My mind keeps wandering to all sorts of indecent thoughts about her. It's been on my mind all day and night, and I can't seem to shake it off. I've even been walking around with a constant erection, which is embarrassing.

I've tried to distract myself with hobbies and activities, but even then, my thoughts drift back to her. It's starting to affect my daily life, as I'm struggling to concentrate on work and other responsibilities. I know I need to find a way to manage these feelings, but it's easier said than done. It's a delicate balance of acknowledging the attraction without letting it consume me completely. I hope with time, I'll be able to find some peace of mind and move on from these thoughts.

However, I got a reprieve when I received a call from our Attorney today, informing me that the Attorney representing AM Myers LLC wants to meet and discuss the lease of the water rights. This news interrupted my thoughts of Austin, and we agreed to meet at our Attorney's office. It's convenient that both attorneys work for the same firm. I informed our Attorney that the entire family will be attending the meeting. Hopefully, this is a good sign that we'll be able to repurchase.

I traveled to Casper for the conference meeting. Before that, I visited my company's CEO office, which I rarely do due to my preference for working from home. When I arrived at the Corporate Office, I walked inside and was greeted by two receptionists. They were friendly and helpful, assisting clients, providing directions, and answering phone calls.

As I walk past, some women adjust their tops and sit up straight, hoping to catch my attention. I can't help but feel a sense of annoyance at their behavior. While I am grateful for the privileges that come with my family's wealth, it can be challenging at times to deal with people who are only interested in what we can offer them. It seems as though many women we encounter are only interested in our money and status, hoping to benefit from it if they can land one of us. It's not uncommon for the same woman to try and seduce each of us at the same event, and it can be difficult to differentiate between genuine interest and ulterior motives.

However, my thoughts shift to Austin and her refusal of our help. Her independence and self-sufficiency were incredibly attractive to me. It was refreshing to meet someone who was not interested in our wealth or status, and who valued hard work and determination above all else. Her refusal to accept our assistance made me respect her even more, and I couldn't help but feel drawn to her. While our worlds may seem vastly different, I couldn't help but be disappointed that there was no way for us to bridge the gap and connect on a deeper level.

I walk onto my floor and am greeted by Abigail. She kindly brings me my coffee as I enter my office. I sat down in my chair and let out a sigh.

"Oh, hi! I didn't know you were coming to the office today," she says in a casual tone.

"We have a scheduled meeting with the new owner of the Mowery estate," I stated.

“"If you require my assistance, please feel free to contact me by paging me," Abigail states as she closes the door.

Fortunate enough, I have an Assistant who does not micromanage and values punctuality. Maintaining a cordial relationship with Abigail is crucial to securing a face-to-face meeting. Moreover, her maturity level is evident from her professional conduct, which eliminates any potential discomfort.  Plus, she is my mother’s age and happily married.

As I work, my thoughts unintentionally wander to Austin. I remember how she appeared in her small shorts and tank top, and I immediately felt myself getting hard. However, I know that Austin and I aren’t meant to be together, our family history preventing me from perusing a girl I can’t stop thinking about. I do hope that she has recovered well after her ankle injury. It was kind of her to go out of her way to assist Stacy, and I admire her for it.

It's normal to feel attracted to someone who's out of reach. Our brains are wired to crave what we can't have, and in a way, that's what makes the chase so thrilling. However, it's important to consider the potential consequences of pursuing this person. Going against your family's wishes could strain relationships and cause unnecessary stress.  However, Austin’s independence and selflessness is making it hard to not go against our family’s feud.

It can be difficult to find someone who truly pushes you to be your best self. That's why I'm looking for someone who shares my drive and ambition. I want a partner who can challenge me to grow and achieve more than I ever thought possible. It's not just about finding someone who can match my work ethic, but someone who can also support and encourage me along the way. Austin’s indifference to my rugged good looks shows she also is searching for more than a physical attraction.

I need to focus on other things and stop thinking about that girl. It wouldn't be good if Abigail caught me partaking in self-gratification. The thought of her disapproving look me made me chuckle. It’s time to get busy with work to take my mind off things. Time passed quickly, and soon enough, it was time to head to the lawyer's office. As I stepped out of my office, I bumped into my brothers who were walking down the hall.

Abigail expresses her well wishes as we prepare to negotiate the return of our mineral and water rights. The four of us enter the elevator and make our way to the lobby in silence, each of us contemplating the same question: is it possible to reach a satisfactory agreement?

My brothers and I arrived at the Attorney's office. The office comprises a team of attorneys, each with their own area of expertise. As we walked down the hallway, people made way for us. We were dressed in suits, two by two, with our sunglasses on. Though we may have come across as intimidating, we were just there to seek legal advice.

We were guided by an assistant to a conference room where we found my parents and Cadee waiting for us. We took our seats and shortly after, our attorney arrived to join us.

“I apologize, but Mr. Jones and Mrs. Myers may be running late. Mrs. Myers was recently involved in an accident and she's still experiencing some mobility issues. This has understandably slowed her down.” Our Attorney explains.

Carrington is clearly frustrated and expresses his annoyance. "We all made it here on time, so why is she running late?" He turns to me, the oldest one present, expecting me to offer a solution. I shake my head, indicating that I don't have an answer, and he lets the matter drop.

So, we were all hanging out, waiting for "her" to arrive. They were talking about her recent injury, and I couldn't help but pay close attention. I mean, I know who she is, but something didn't add up. Her last name should be Mowery, unless she went and changed it. I'm not sure why she would do that, but I'm definitely curious.

I'm not one to gossip or anything, but something just didn't feel right.  Why does she suddenly have a new last name? Did she get married?  But she didn’t have a wedding ring on when I met her.  Maybe I'm just being nosy, but I feel like there's more to the story. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what she tells us when she gets here.

After a brief wait, Mr. Jones enters the room with Austin trailing behind him. I observe her closely as she limps in with a cast on her left leg. I can't help but wonder why her last name is listed as Myer instead of Mowery. However, before I can ask, my sister beats me to the question.

"Austin?" she asks, sounding surprised. "Can you tell us what brings you here?" Her eyes are scanning the surroundings, and we're all curious about her reason for being here.

Mr. Jones decided to provide some clarification for his client. He explained that Ms. Myers was the rightful heir to the Mowery Estate and had come to discuss their mineral and water rights.

Austin gently touches Mr. Jones' arm to catch his attention. "Excuse me, sir, but I think there might be a misunderstanding. I know this family, or at least I used to know Cadee. We were friends back when I went to school here. They might be confused because they knew me as Austin Marie Mowery, not Austin Marie Myers."

Mr. Jones listens attentively as she speaks, without interruption. She explains that her mother changed their last name shortly after they left Wyoming and admits that she doesn't know the reason behind it. She was only ten years old at the time and was informed of her new last name without any explanation.

As I watch, my heart aches as I see my mother hugging Austin tightly, tears streaming down her face. Austin hesitates for a moment, but then returns moms embrace, offering comfort and support.

"I apologize that you have been dragged into this situation. I wish I could have done more to resolve it, but unfortunately, you are now dealing with the consequences of your grandfather's actions." Mom's voice cracks as tears fill her eyes.

"Mrs. Carter, please don't worry. My mother protected me from most of what happened," she reassures, gently rubbing my mother's back. "That's also why we're here now, to make things right."

My mother steps back, looking confused. "What is it that you're trying to tell me, dear?"

"I'm here today to return your water and mineral rights to you," Austin explains in a straightforward and honest manner.

"What is the reason?" my father asks, seeking an explanation.

Austin releases my mother and faces my father. "It's the right thing to do," she replies matter-of-factly.

As the discussion begins, several people speak up at the same time, all wanting to know more about the proposal. They ask practical questions like, "What's the deal?" and "What do we have to pay for this?" I observe the situation, paying close attention to Austin. Suddenly, she stands up and lets out a sharp whistle, commanding everyone's attention. They all fall silent, waiting for her to speak.

“I want to assure you that there is no deception behind my actions. I am simply correcting injustices, and I don't expect anything in return. You happen to be the sixth family I've assisted today, and I'm happy to help. However, I must admit that I'm feeling exhausted, and my ankle is causing me discomfort. Therefore, I'll try to wrap this up as quickly as possible. Mr. Jones, please continue.”  Austin clarifies.

As we take our seats, Mr. Jones clears his throat and distributes packets to everyone. I'm trying to pay attention to what he's saying, but my eyes keep drifting over to Austin, who's dressed in a tank top, a jean jacket, and a long skirt with a slit up the side. She's got a cast on her foot, so she's wearing these plain white sneakers, but somehow it all looks really put together. Her hair is in a high ponytail, and she's barely wearing any makeup, but she looks stunning. I don't know how she does it.

It's kind of ridiculous how Austin is the most beautiful person in this room, and she probably doesn't even realize it. If anyone were to compliment her, she'd probably brush it off like it was nothing. It's like she's not even trying to be pretty, but she just is. It's not fair, really. But I guess that's just how some people are - effortlessly gorgeous.

As I observe her, I can't help but wonder what's going through her mind. Perhaps she's nervous about being in a room full of strangers, or maybe she's self-conscious about her injury. As I continue to observe her, I notice the way she keeps glancing around the room, almost as if she’s gauging each person’s reactions to the packet they have been given.

As I review the bank statements, I can't help but feel a sense of curiosity and intrigue. Why did he keep this account open for so long without making any withdrawals? Was he saving up for something? Or perhaps he simply forgot about it? The mystery only deepens as I notice the steady stream of deposits from our leasing of the water rights. It's as if he didn’t need the rights or the money but continued to fight to return them to us.

Despite the frustration of having to write the check, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude towards Austin’s grandfather. It's clear that he was a smart and forward-thinking businessman, always looking ahead to the future. This small act of leaving this account open is a testament to his belief in the importance of investing in the future. I can't help but feel inspired by Austin's example and the legacy she is building.

Mr. Jones' presentation was a clear and concise summary of the situation at hand. He began by presenting the facts, citing evidence from bank statements that showed Mr. Mowery had not utilized the funds paid for leasing the water rights. This evidence led to the conclusion that Ms. Myers would be returning the water and mineral rights to the family, as well as all payments that were deposited into the account.

I quickly meet her gaze and notice that she's looking at me with some uncertainty, perhaps hoping to gauge my reaction. My father speaks up before I can respond, and I can't help but feel a bit frustrated that this woman's presence seems to be throwing me off my usual game. Normally, I'm quite vocal in meetings.

"Hey Austin, we appreciate your generosity, but we can't accept this from you. We were prepared to pay for the rights we sold, and we intend to do so. We understand that you are offering the same deal to other families. We don't want you to suffer because of us. How are you going to support yourself? We don't want to take away your livelihood." My dad states.

Austin stands up straight and meets my father's gaze. She speaks firmly but respectfully, saying, "I understand your perspective, Mr. Carter, but ultimately the decision to return this is mine. I made that choice as soon as I learned about my grandfather's actions. Besides, I have a successful custom saddle-making business that provides me with enough income. Accepting your offer to buy back ‘rights’ would feel like taking blood money, and I cannot do that." Austin says matter-of-factly.

As I continued to observe her, I couldn't help but admire her confidence and assertiveness. It was clear that she was someone who knew what she wanted and wasn't afraid to go after it. Even though I was drawn to her, I also couldn't help but feel a twinge of anxiety. My family was incredibly important to me, and I didn't want to do anything that would cause tension or drama. I knew that pursuing her could potentially cause a rift between us.

However, my attraction to her only continued to grow, and I found myself thinking of ways to approach her without causing any issues with my family. Perhaps I could subtly get to know her better and see if there was a mutual interest. Whatever I decided to do, I knew that I needed to tread carefully and prioritize my family's feelings while also acknowledging my own desires.

"Well, unfortunately, your grandfather has been unwilling to sell us back our water rights, even when we offered to pay above market value. It might be wise for us to consider accepting the deal and moving on from the Mowery’s," Carrington suggests with a hint of frustration in his voice.

As I watch the scene unfold before me, I can feel the tension mounting in the air. Austin is being targeted by my brother who seems to harbor deep-seated animosity towards her. I don't know the details of their history, but it's clear that this man is holding a grudge. It's uncomfortable to witness, and I wish I could do something to make it stop.

Despite my apprehension, I feel a sense of admiration for Austin. She's not backing down or giving in to the man's hostility. Instead, she's standing her ground and handling the situation with confidence and grace. It's clear that she's no pushover, and I'm impressed by her ability to take control of a difficult situation. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most admirable thing we can do is to stand up for ourselves and others, even when it's uncomfortable or scary.

Austin stood up and let out a deep breath. "You now have the water and mineral rights, along with the money. I have already signed all the necessary documents, and the notary has also sealed and signed them. So, unfortunately, the deal is final. However, I do have two more things to discuss," she said, turning her attention to me.

“Cortland, it's great to hear from you. I understand that you're interested in a custom saddle from 'Sitting Pretty Saddles.' Unfortunately, I have experienced a setback due to an injury, which has caused me to delay setting up my workspace. However, once I've completed the setup, I'll be happy to make the saddle for you. I noticed that your brothers have made some negative comments about my company on their social media pages. I would appreciate it if they could remove those comments. I recently had a family emergency, which forced me to move to Wyoming. If the negative comments are not removed, I may have to involve my attorney and file a cease-and-desist order.” Austin exudes a sense of assurance and composure.

Cadee asked with a tear-streaked face, "Do you happen to be the owner of the saddle company that Stacy is interested in?"

"Yes, Cadee, that's my company," she responds with confidence when asked about the "Sitting Pretty" saddle.

"Dad says, 'Austin, the social media posts will be down today.'"

"Thank you, Sir. Our business is now concluded, and you won't have to deal with any more Mowery’s," she said looking to Carrington in a polite tone. Then she turned towards my sister.

"Cadee, if Stacy needs a saddle, I'd be happy to make one for her. You can take her and her horse to the farm for the fitting. I don't want to impose or cause any discomfort, so I'll give you a call when everything is ready. She'll be my first client when I return to work." Austin tells Cadee and hugs her.

As Austin makes a move to leave, my mom reaches out to stop her by placing her hand on her arm. "Austin, do you live alone on the farm?" she asks in a concerned tone.

“As Austin prepares to leave, my mom grabs her arm and asks, "Austin, are you the only one living on that farm?" Austin replies, "Yes, ma'am, it's just me and four horses. I'm actually looking for a farmhand to help take care of things while I'm away at barrel races or traveling for work. Hopefully, I'll find someone soon so I can get back to my responsibilities." My mom nods and gives Austin a sympathetic smile.

“Lane Anderson,” I say.

“Excuse me,” Austin turns to me and questions.

“Lane Anderson used to work with your grandfather on the farm, but he left a year ago when your grandfather fell ill. After selling all the horses, Lane refused job offers to train horses elsewhere and decided to stay in Wyoming. He's currently doing odd jobs to make ends meet. I'll have Cadee give him your number so he can contact you, as I'm sure he'd be interested in returning to his old job. However, in the meantime, I'm more than willing to offer my assistance, Austin. It's the least I can do.” Even though I know she'll likely refuse, I won't take no for an answer. And as strange as it may sound, there's something compelling about her standing up to me and

"Ah, it seems like our brother is collaborating with the enemy," Camden stated in a serious tone.

“"Camden Carter, that's enough," Mom says sternly. My other brothers appear to have thoughts on the matter, but Mom's glare silences them immediately.

"Thanks, Cortland, but I can manage on my own. I don't want to cause any problems between you and your brothers," she says confidently. I'm impressed by her ability to handle a tense situation with grace and composure, even in the face of hostility from a room full of men.

She bids farewell to Mr. Jones and embraces Cadee once more before leaving with confidence, or as much as she can muster while limping. Mr. Jones departs shortly after Austin. When the door closes behind them, my father becomes visibly upset.

“I'm surprised by the men in this room. The girl involved in this matter is completely innocent. She inherited a fortune and decided to return it to its rightful owners. She's successfully running a multi-million-dollar business and managing a farm despite her injuries. I also admire her for not bowing down to anyone in this room. I've heard complaints from some of you about how all the women you meet are submissive and only after money and power. But this girl is different. She's not interested in any of that, and any one of you would be lucky to have someone like her in your life.” Father exclaimed.

"I find it inappropriate to suggest that any of us should pursue a relationship with the Mowery girl," Carrington responds with disdain.

My father's face contorts with anger and frustration. He paces around the room and mutters under his breath. I can tell he's trying to keep his voice down so as not to upset me, but I can still sense the tension radiating off of him. I try to avoid making eye contact, knowing that anything I say will likely only make things worse.

“Oh boys, let me tell you, that girl is a real badass! Not only did she put you all in your place, but she also saved your niece from danger. And let's not forget, she's beautiful! I bet you guys are already planning to sneak off and fantasize about her later.”  Dad states.

As Dad spoke, we shifted awkwardly and glanced at each other. We knew there was some truth to his words, but none of us were willing to admit it. Austin had stood up to us in a way we had never experienced before, and it was both arousing and impressive. In addition, the fact that she had saved our niece from danger had earned her even more respect, although we are too stubborn to admit it.

Mom tries to keep it together, but we all know she's thinking the same thing. Our family is known for being super chill about sex and stuff like that. It's not like we sit around the dinner table discussing our sex lives, but we don't shy away from the topic either. We all understand that sex is a natural part of life.

"Hey, don't judge me," I retort, laughing. "I can multitask like a boss."

Everyone laughs and nods in agreement. We all know that feeling of being so caught up in a daydream that we can barely focus on anything else. And let's be real, who hasn't practiced their one-handed typing skills while daydreaming about a crush?

“When Stacy needed help, she came to the rescue wearing these little shorts and a tank top. I couldn't help but notice how attractive she was while I was helping her. However, I also felt conflicted because of her relation to Old Man Mowery. It's a confusing situation that I'm still trying to navigate.” I explain to my family.

Coldwell harshly criticizes, "Well you’re a dumbass. If you wanted to pursue this girl, making a promise to have Lane, who is quite popular with the ladies, work for her at her farm was not a wise decision."

Oops, I realize I didn't think things through. It's important for me to speak with Lane before Cadee sends that message. Perhaps it's best if I take Lane to her farm so we can discuss things face-to-face. I have plans for this evening; I'll be heading to her farm to have a serious talk.

"Cortland, I know that girl's grandfather had some ulterior motives, and that's why her mom took her away to Ohio. If you feel a connection with Austin, don't let your family's opinions hold you back. She could be the missing piece that makes you feel whole and gives you a loving family. Follow your heart and make this decision for yourself, without worrying about anyone else," Mom advises in a realistic tone.

“Well, I must admit, when I saw her rescue my niece, I felt a strong connection with her. So, I guess it's time to act and try to build a relationship with her. It's not every day that you meet someone who impresses you like that.” I inform everyone.

Her bravery and quick thinking left a lasting impression on me. I mean, I've seen people do good deeds before, but there was something different about her. Maybe it was the way she handled the situation with such grace, or maybe it was her unwavering determination to help my niece. Either way, I knew I had to get to know her better.

"Hey, have you considered the possibility that she might not be interested in you?" Coldwell playfully suggests.

But deep down, his words hit a nerve. But then again, I have always been persistent, especially when it comes to something that I really want. Who knows? Maybe she just needs a little more time to see how awesome I am. I'll keep trying until I know for sure that she's not interested. Thanks for the advice, Coldwell, but I'm not giving up just yet.

"Well, I’m about to find out. I am going to head over to the farm and help her take care of the horses.  Also, she’s not the only one who doesn’t take “no” for an answer." I say calmly as I get up from my chair and walk towards the door.

As I head out the door, my siblings and parents can't resist teasing me about my latest romantic pursuit. I play along, laughing at their good-natured jokes. But deep down, I'm determined to win over the girl I've been thinking about nonstop.

She might seem like a long shot, but I can't help but feel hopeful as I imagine all the possibilities. Maybe we'll hit it off and start dating, or maybe we'll just become good friends. Either way, I'm excited to see where this goes. And who knows, maybe one day I'll look back and laugh at how nervous and giddy I was in this moment. But for now, I'll let myself enjoy the thrill of the chase.
