Third Party POV

“You son of a-" Reno growled, wiping the blood off with the back of his sleeve before charging back at Lake.

But before either could land another blow, several guys from the class jumped in, grabbing both of them, trying to keep them apart. Lake thrashed wildly in their hold, his chest heaving, teeth bared.

“Come on!” he shouted, eyes locked on Reno, who was still struggling against the hands restraining him. “COME ON!”

In one powerful jerk, Lake tore free, lunging forward, managing to grab a fistful of Reno’s shirt as chaos reigned around them. Desks scraped, chairs were knocked over, and Lux's voice could be heard amid the commotion. “Lake! Stop! Lake, please!”

But he didn’t hear her. Or if he did, it didn’t register. His fury had taken over, blinding and deafening him to everything else.

After what seemed like an eternity to some and a blink of an eye to others, security stormed into the room and yanked the two boys apart with force. Lake was still thrashing when th

Kairos's POVThe city blurred past the windows as Darian sat behind the wheel, one hand on it even though he was not driving. Watching him reminded me of my lessons with my mate, and I couldn't wait to get back at it. This driving thing was fun.Leaning against the window, I watched the sun high in the sky, and it felt so close from up here. It should have been a happy ride, with Darian's excitement to see our mother rubbing off on me, but my thoughts were still on my mate, whom I had left behind, and how hurt he was by the entire situation with Mira, even as we made up."Are you okay?" my brother asked, causing me to realize my expression was showing, and I quickly fixed my face as I looked at him. “Mom said she’s only staying for three days.”I paused and added quietly, "But Mira's not going back with her." Darian raised his brow while tapping the steering wheel. “She’s staying?”“Yeah.” I laughed bitterly and rubbed the back of my neck. “I don’t know what I’m going to do, brother.

Lux's POV The second Alec jogged off toward his coach, who had called him, sounding as if he had something urgent to discuss, I turned to Alec.Alec was the baseball team's captain, and just before leaving, he finally revealed the news that he had come to our dorm to share yesterday evening. A scout from The Diamond Kings, the national baseball team, had contacted Alec's coach to schedule tryouts with Alec for the national team in a month, and Alec and I were both thrilled for him.He also got a call from his father before the coach called. His father had called to let him know how it went with the person he had gone to meet with about being Alec's agent, as Alec did not yet have one.Alec was his father's heir, and he was supposed to take over the business one day, but his father was still going strong, and he told Alec he could pursue baseball for a few years before taking over anything. And that was exactly what Alec wanted: to start out on his own, doing something he enjoyed. "Wa

Lux's POV“Hey, man,” Lake greeted Alec and Kairos echoed the same a second later before he started toward the cafeteria doors. But he paused halfway and returned his gaze to Lake.“I’ll call you, okay?” Lake nodded, and as Kairos began to walk away again, he paused, pulled something from his pocket, and handed it to Lake. From where I sat, it looked like car keys. Lake smiled as he took them, softly muttering, "Thanks," but it was not a best-friend smile. It was not even close, and I looked at Alec, whose expression made me pause when our gazes met.His eyes were knowing, and I was taken aback as I wondered if he knew about Lake and Kairos, if Lake had told him, or he caught on to what was happening. My eyes darted back to Lake, but he seemed completely unaware. He returned Alec's gaze without missing a beat, telling him that he had no idea he would be here, or he would have brought something for him as well.Alec, however, waved him off. “Nah, I’m good. Reed and I were free during t

Lux's POVI sat on the bench, letting my gaze wander across the courtyard, half watching the breeze push leaves across the pavement and the other half trying not to worry about Lake taking too long. The eatery across the street was always packed at this time, so I figured he’d probably be stuck behind five people trying to customize their sandwiches down to the grain of salt.I noticed someone approaching me out of the corner of my eye, and Olivia smiled as I turned my head. “What are you doing sitting here all by yourself?” she asked, brushing her hair out of her face as she came to stand before me."I'm not," I replied, sitting up straighter. “I’m with Lake; he went to the eatery across the street.”"Oh," she said, settling down beside me. "I should probably go inside and eat, but I am waiting for Becca." I nodded too, sneaking a glance at her. She looked better than she had throughout the day. She looked less pale, and her shoulders were not drawn up as if she were about to cry or

Lake's POVKairos called my name, but I continued walking. I didn’t even flinch. How did he even see me? I didn’t want him to see me.He was the reason I suggested to Lux that we avoid the cafeteria, and I was grateful Lux did not insist on going inside because I did not feel like explaining myself. I didn’t have the strength to deal with Kairos or our situation. But just then I felt his hand grabbing mine, and that finally made me turn around.“What are you doing?” I snapped, trying to pull back, but he didn’t answer. Instead, he pulled me forward, crossing the street and dragging me with him, his grip firm and unyielding."Kairos! What the-” I looked around, panicked, my feet stumbling over themselves as I tried to slow him down, but he was too strong. “Let go of me!” I hissed, trying to wrench my arm free, but I didn’t get the chance. He shoved me behind the building, pressing me hard against the cold brick wall, his body boxing me in. My breath hitched as my back connected with th

Lux's POV The bell finally rang, and I couldn’t have been more relieved. I didn't even wait to pack my books before pulling my phone out of my pocket and dialing Lake, who answered on the second ring.“Are you back at the dorm? Or are you still around?”I didn't think he would stick around after all that chaos, but I needed to confirm before heading to my car. I had promised myself I would attend every single period, but that went out the window the moment Reno did what he did.Lake needed me unless Kairos was with him, and if that was the case, I would return to attend the rest of my classes. However, Lake's next words took me by surprise.“I’m still around,” he said in a voice that was a little rough. “I’m coming out of my class now.” Wow, I was impressed because I knew I would have been sprawled out on my bed; I can not handle emotional distress.“Do you want to meet at the cafeteria?” I asked but Lake had other ideas.“I was thinking of sitting by the benches,” he said. “Do you m
