Lux's POV

I took a step back and narrowed my eyes at the girl, trying to make sense of what was going on. "Excuse me?" I asked firmly, while the voice inside me snapped at the audacity. Whatever was or was not going on between me and Reed was none of this girl's damn business.

Who even was she?

The girl blinked like she’d only just realized how far she’d gone, and her expression softened slightly as she ran a hand through her tangled curls.

“I’m Charlotte,” she said, sticking out her hand like that would fix the weird vibe she’d just dropped into my lap. I didn’t take the hand; I didn’t know where that had been. Furthermore, I did not go around shaking strangers' hands.

Withdrawing her hand awkwardly, she sniffled, her eyes darting around as if she was trying to gather herself, and I watched her fingers tremble as they swept through her hair again, confirming what I had already suspected—she was on something.

“I didn’t mean to come off rude,” she went on. "I just—I saw you and Reed ou

Lake's POV“Yes. One day.” I responded as Kairos asked if I wanted him to meet my parents, but I did not dwell on it because I didn't want to think about the complications and ruin the moment, and he didn't press, which I appreciated."I would love to meet your family one day, and I would love for you to meet mine," he stated, and we returned our attention to the food.Kairos pulled out the ingredients: thinly sliced tuna, oysters on ice, strips of salmon, a tray of seaweed and kelp, scallops, octopus sashimi, and even a container with some sort of sea cucumber in it that looked… well, questionable. He did, however, have avocado, cucumber slices, pickled ginger, rice crackers, and mango, all of which he was likely aware humans enjoyed.“I’ve been around Reed,” he said with a sly grin, seeing me looking at them, and I grinned. “You really thought of everything.”I asked what he wanted me to do, and he said, "Maybe plate the food," before passing me a tray.We worked side by side, and h

Lake's POVWe floated there for what seemed like hours, weightless in the water, with Kairos still in his mer form and his golden tail gently swaying beneath us. His arms wrapped around me like a warm current, his chest pressing against mine as it rose and fell with every effortless breath.Above us, the sky stretched through the retracted roof, littered with stars that sparkled like the scales beneath my fingertips.I traced one absentmindedly, dragging a sluggish hand down his side. The texture was smooth, but with a hardness beneath it, delicate but strong, and I smiled to myself as I softly asked, "Do these ever fall off?"Kairos cocked his head toward me, eyes half-lidded. “Sometimes,” he said. “Not often. Only when I scrape against something hard or get hurt. Damaged scales fall away, allowing new ones to grow." I nodded in fascination.“That’s… incredible.” He gave me a small smile as I shifted slightly, still nestled against him. "What was it like for you and Darian when you f

Alec's POVExhaling, I slid into my car, but I could not bring myself to start the engine with all the noise in my head, so I paused. With my hands on the steering wheel, my fingers clenched and relaxed as I sat there, allowing whatever it was that I was feeling, rejection, perhaps to have its fill. The feeling was new to me and it stung. It didn’t sting because I thought Lux didn’t care; I knew she did, and I knew she didn’t mean to make me feel so… discarded. But still, I couldn’t help how I felt.I’d never been on this side before. I was always the one who stepped away clean and untouched, with no mess or strings. But with her, things were different, and I realised something else.I was afraid that, even though she said she loved me and I believed her, she would choose him out of obligation, because he was the one who was kind to her when I pushed her away. Otherwise, she could not love us both. That was not how it worked. So I had to get ahead of the situation before guilt and a s

Lake's POV I nearly choked on my breath. “Wait—what?” I turned to Kairos, who smiled and gave David, who did not blink, a small nod. "Kairos, that is too much. I can’t—”"I want you to have them," he said before I could finish. “And I’m not taking no for an answer.” Okay, that was the line, and I grabbed his hand and tugged him toward the doors. He had no concept of money; it was not normal to spend four million on someone as if it were four dollars."Excuse us," I told David. “We’ll be right back.” Outside, I turned to Kairos.“Do you even know how much those cars cost?” I asked, my tone somewhere between grateful and panicked. “It’s close to eight million dollars combined. Eight, Kairos—” But again, I didn’t even get to finish. He took a step forward and kissed me in an obvious attempt to silence me. When we pulled apart, my heart absolutely losing its mind, he looked me in the eye.“I will hear no more of how you can’t accept the cars,” he said. "Refusing or even questioning a gif

Lux's POV“What are you doing here?” I asked Alec, trying to keep my voice steady, and he looked at me with unreadable eyes. “I came to see Lake.” I opened my mouth to say Lake was not home, but Alec interrupted, "And you."My throat tightened and I swallowed hard, becoming acutely aware of everything. How close he was, how warm the hallway felt, and how my voice was not nearly as strong as I wanted it to be when I said, "Lake's not here. And I’m busy.”I didn’t even ask what he wanted to see me about. I couldn’t. A voice in my head snapped, ‘What are you doing? You wanted to talk to him.’ And I did. But how was I supposed to talk to him when I couldn’t even look at him without my eyes roaming? He smelled so good, fresh with hints of something earthy and fruity, and clean enough to make you want to lean in a little closer. His hair was also freshly cut, which I had not noticed earlier because he was wearing a cap. And that shirt he was wearing didn’t help anything. There was a glint i

Lake's POV The second coach announced the last name, and the locker room erupted. Cheers broke out, others banging on the locker in celebration as bottles burst like firecrackers. The air was filled with the sharp fizz of champagne and the echo of voices shouting over one another. It was a good kind of chaos. And as I stood there, still attempting to quiet the pounding heart that had been raging in my chest while I waited impatiently for my name before it finally rang out. Coach raised his hands to quiet the room. However, even he recognized its futility, so he shook his head and laughed. He called over the commotion, "All right, I will keep it brief. The first team meeting is scheduled for Thursday at precisely five o'clock. Congratulations to all of the team members. You earned this!” That was all he managed to get in before the noise engulfed him once more. Before I could react, Alec had me in a bear hug, damn near lifting me off the ground."Congratulations, man!" he shouted over
