Alec's POV

I stopped as well, even though I clearly heard her ask Reed to stay. However, my feet seemed to lock in place on their own.

Both of them turned to look at me as if I were stuck in the wrong scene, and Lux's brows lifted slightly, her eyes squinting in confusion. It was the most intense minute of my life. "Um, Reed. "I am talking to Reed," she said, visibly perplexed despite her efforts not to show it. And I cleared my throat as a reflex to relieve the tension.

"Yeah. Of course," I muttered, swallowing hard as I stepped back out, the door closing slower than intended. I just stood there, hand still on the handle, heart racing as I stared at the white paint of the door like it would crack open and show me what was happening on the other side. What did she need him for?

I was grateful Lake did not look back as he walked toward the front. I stayed there for maybe ten seconds—maybe thirty, I don’t even know. Then I moved. I told myself I was being ridiculous… weird, but before

Lux's POVMy heart sank the moment I said the words that Alec knew. "Wait, Reed. I did not mean it that way-" I reached for him, panic rising. "I was just trying to express how much I love you. I didn’t mean to say that... I shouldn’t have said that.” But he was not listening. He turned away from me, taking long, heavy strides towards the door."Reed, wait!" My hand grasped the back of his shirt as I chased after him. But he shrugged me off without saying anything, and I scrambled before him, attempting to block the exit. “Please,” I breathed, my arms out. “Just listen to me.” He paused, and for a brief moment, I thought he would listen. But then he just looked at me and I froze because this time I was sure his eyes gleamed with something that seemed unreal. A chill ran through my veins as I stumbled back, and he brushed past me."Reed…" I whispered before pursuing him again. He did not take the elevator. Instead, he turned to the stairs. "Reed!" I called out louder, hurrying after hi

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 118: A Complete Mess

Lake's POV Entering the hospital room, I found my cousin still sitting on the bed with his face buried in his hands. He looked up as I entered and tried to appear less wrecked than he was, and I never expected to see this look on his face. The look of finally letting someone in.My cousin was notorious with the girls, and he always said commitments were not his thing, but here we are, and he may have screwed it up.“I screwed up, didn’t I?” he said, and I placed the food on the table and walked up to him, sitting beside him. “Yes, you did. What you just pulled was a jerk move and you hurt her.”I loved him but I wasn’t going to lie to him. He let out a sigh, and I continued speaking. “But maybe it’s not too late. If you slept with her and ignored her, but her feelings for you didn’t go away.... maybe they will remain this time too, and you may have another chance.”I continued. "If that is the case, you better be greatful and show that shit. You have better make it up to her. She’s a

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 117: Shame

Lake's POV The sound of Lux's palm striking Alec's cheek echoed throughout the room, jerking me upright in bed. I stared, perplexed, attempting to catch up with what was happening. Alec stood there, face flushed and equally as shocked.Lux trembled in front of him, her eyes filled with betrayal before she spoke, accusing Alec of trying to hurt her by telling Reed about them. My eyes widened, not only from what he did, but also from Lux's genuine surprise. Didn’t she realize how this looked? Alec was Reed’s friend.Sleeping with him behind Reed's back was not only wrong but also reckless. And now it was unravelling. Alec spoke, stating that he was not sorry. "I told Reed because I wanted him to break up with you."A sob ripped from Lux, and she staggered back, like his words were physical blows. “Why?” she cried, voice trembling. “What did I ever do to you? Why would you do this to me?” Alec stepped toward her. "Don't!" she exclaimed, backing away, her arm jerking up like a shield. “D

Kairos's POV“What? What are you talking about?” Mom asked, looking at me like she didn’t know me and I repeated what I said, that I didn’t love Mira. She asked me when I realized this before asking who I loved, land maidens. “I don’t understand. Help me understand where this is coming from."I explained to her where it was coming from. I never pursued Mira; they chose her for me and expected me to love her. She cut me off, saying they never expected me to simply love her.She explained that they knew it would take some time to get to know each other, but that love would eventually come, as it had for them and my grandparents and great-grandparents before them.Mom reminded me that this had always been the case; the next king's queen was chosen by his parents to ensure suitability. She let out a long, quiet breath before taking my hand again, this time more firmly.“Kairos, you have the heart of a king and I know it’s not easy,” she continued. “I know what it means to carry the burden

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 115: Drifting

Lake's POV The door flew open, and Lux and Alec rushed in first, their faces filled with relief and concern. Reed followed behind them, but he lingered at the doorway, keeping his distance as Lux and Alec approached the bed. Lux was the first to reach me; she climbed onto the bed and wrapped her arms around me. I hugged her back."How are you feeling?" she asked, drawing back to look at me, but spoke again before I could respond, brushing hair away from my face. "Why are all these awful things happening to you?""I'm fine now," I said with a small smile, unable to respond to her second question and tell her that this time I had done this to myself.Alec took the next step forward, sitting on the bed and pulling me in for a brief, strong hug. "What did the doctors say?" he asked, and I informed them of their findings, which are consistent with Reed's. I also mentioned that they were running some blood tests to confirm.Reed spoke up from the doorway right at that moment. "I'm heading

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 114: A Coincidence

Lake's POV Kairos finally settled down beside me, still buzzing with excitement about my new abilities, and I must admit that he made me somewhat enthusiastic as well. I’d be even more so if I weren’t worried about whether I’d be able to act normal in front of people and not have any slip ups. That made me think of Reed and wonder what his strengths were. But Kairos needed to ask him before telling me. My mate noticed my thoughtful expression and inquired as to what I was thinking.I told him I was thinking about Reed and his strengths, and that I was still waiting for him to ask Reed about telling me. I also mentioned that I had strengths now, something to lose, so perhaps he would be okay with Kairos telling me.I didn’t even finish. Kairos sat next to me and told me Reed possessed the same strengths as I did. He had super hearing, probably the same speed as I did, and could breathe underwater. My eyes widened.“Is he mer?” I asked before stopping myself and telling him I understoo
