Kairos's POV

By the time we returned to the dorm, the sky had turned a quiet ink-blue over the campus. And my thoughts turned to Lake, who I knew was probably waiting to hear from me before glancing at Darian who walked beside me, hands stuffed into his pockets.

We were returning from seeing our father off. He never liked the surface; it was too dry, too exposed, and too unfamiliar. So, even though it was late and Reed's father, Micah, suggested he stay the night, he declined.

The sea was treacherous at night, but he had not trLakeed alone. The royal guards remained in the water, which provided some comfort. Now it was just me and Darian, and I unlocked the door and let us in. We had not talked much since leaving the ocean, and I didn't want to continue walking around with all of this between us.

So I turned towards him. “Why didn’t you expose me?” I asked, closing the door behind us, and Darian sank into the couch. He did not look at me right away, instead staring at the floor, as i

Alec's POV “I-I don’t know what to say,” I finally found my voice while attempting to sit up straighter, and Reed stood up and helped me before telling me that all I had to do was decide whether or not to accept his offer. But why? I mean, I knew what my answer would be. The answer was obviously yes. I was in love with Lux, but this was unexpected and unlike how I assumed he felt about her.If it were up to me, I would never share her with anyone, and I assumed he felt the same way. So why the sudden shift?Looking at him, I said that to him and asked why, to which he looked away briefly before returning to me. Before he could reply, I inquired once more if this resulted from what Lux and I had done, if it alarmed him and caused him to question whether it would ever happen again.I was curious if this was his strategy for getting ahead of the situation. And I wondered if he loved her less after what happened, but he assured me that was not the case. He claimed that nothing had change

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 127: Brothers

Reed's POV“What?” Lux whispered, her voice barely discernible. Her face was pale, and I did not blame her. Hell, I was still shocked. The words had barely left my mouth, and already they felt like someone else had said them. But they were mine, and I meant them as much as they tore me apart.I woke up this morning to find her curled up next to me, and as I looked at her, I thought about how much I loved her. And with that, I reflected on how I would eventually break her heart. I thought about how unfair it would be to ruin her chances of finding someone who could give her everything just so I could have her all to myself. It was selfish, and that was when I came to this decision. We were still young. Perhaps we were too young to consider eternity, but time did not stop for us. What if we stayed together, made it through the storms, and reached the point where she wanted more, wanted a family, a home, a child in her arms?I’d seen the way she lit up when she talked about those things,

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 126: Cheating

Lake's POVKairos was losing it on the phone, his voice becoming more panicked with each word, and all I could do was bring the phone closer to my ear, wishing I could hold him or do something. I could hear him pacing as he told me they had searched everywhere.I was not sure what to say. My mind was empty, except for the sick pit in my stomach caused by guilt clawing at my chest. I should not have kept him with me. I should not have distracted him; he was drunk, and I should have made him go back inside.Mira was a mermaid and knew no one around here. She had no other place to go.“Did you-” I paused, running my hand through my hair. I was about to utter nonsense. “Did you call Reed? Maybe he knows something?” It sounded ridiculous as I said it. Mira would not have gone to Reed without help. Furthermore, Reed was with Lux.But I didn't know what else to say, and perhaps he could help find her. “She wouldn’t go to him,” Kairos muttered eventually, frustration tightening his tone. “Rig

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 125: Gone

Lux's POV I swallowed hard, and there was a moment of silence as my stomach twisted violently. "You did?" I muttered, barely recognizing my own voice as the words slipped out of my mouth, and tears stung the back of my eyes, as if they had been waiting for an opportunity to fall.“Yes.” His gaze was fixed on mine, and he stood up and approached me, each step echoing like a crack in my chest. He stopped in front of me, and I raised my head to look him in the eyes once more. His expression was not one of smugness or gloating. All he appeared to be was exhausted. But still, I felt myself shatter, piece by piece, at the thought of him with someone else. The worst part was knowing I had no right to feel this way. I had slept with someone too. I made the first cut. And Reed hadn’t even found out from me. He found out in the worst way possible. I did not even have the decency to spare him that. But knowing that did not alleviate the pain. “I didn’t do it to hurt you,” he spoke again, hand c

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 124: The Calm Before The Storm

Third Party POVMira stood frozen, her breath trapped in her throat. Her lips parted to mouth Kairos's name, but nothing came out. The world shifted, and her feet stumbled backward. No…The pain was crushing, a betrayal so sharp it took the air out of her lungs. Her Kairos. She had loved him since she could remember. The mer with salt in his hair and wildness in his eyes; the mer who made her heart race before she even understood what a heart could feel. She used to follow him through the reefs, watching how the light caught in his hair when he surfaced. He was constantly just ahead of her, swimming faster and laughing louder. But Mira had never minded trailing behind. She thought maybe, one day, he’d look back and reach for her hand. And sometimes he did. In brief moments, he smiled just for her. He would sit with her on the rocks and listen to her talk about nothing. Sometimes it was perfect and she would even sing for him. But such moments were fleeting.Despite this, she continued

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 123: Reassurance

Lake's POV I came to a stop just outside the tree line in front of Kairos's house, not wanting to go any closer. The house was a little deeper in, tucked behind the trees.Leaning forward against the steering wheel, I sighed, hoping Kairos had listened and passed out inside the house. It was late, past 2 a.m., and my body felt like it had been through a washing machine and back.I was still eager to see him. But I was exhausted, and if he had already fallen asleep, I would simply turn the car around and leave him a message for the morning.I reached for my phone to call him, and it did not even ring. Kairos picked up almost instantly, and his voice slurred as he said, “Come inside…” to which I let out a short, dry laugh. Of course, he would say that. Clearly, the alcohol was still talking. He knew it would be a bad idea for me to come inside. Plus, I would never do that to his Luxncée.“I’m not coming in. You have to come out. I’m parked by the trees.”There was a pause, then he mumb
