Lux's POV

Lake scrambled for his phone so fast he nearly knocked over his tray. I watched, frozen, as he angled the screen toward his face and flipped the camera, his expression changing in an instant.

His lips parted, his breath catching, and his shoulders tensed, while his eyes, still fixed on the screen, clouded with what I could only describe as fear.

“Lake—” I began to say that maybe it was nothing, but we should go to the infirmary to have his eyes checked out, but before I could finish, he shot up from the table.

“I need to go,” he said quickly, his voice barely above a whisper, and I tried to speak again, to ask if I could go with him. But he was already on his way to the cafeteria doors, moving too fast.

I stood, grabbing my phone, nearly knocking over my own tray in the process. “Lake!” He didn’t stop. “Stay there!” he called back without turning around. “I’ll be back.” And then he was gone.

I stood there for a moment, phone clutched to my chest, heart pounding so hard that

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 72: Entanglements

Lux's POV Sitting in my third class, I was barely holding it together as I stared at the professor, pretended to follow along, and nodded a few times as if I was processing everything he said. My mind was nowhere near the room, and I had completely lost control of it.It was still stuck replaying this morning with Alec. I’d never had something like this happen to me before; I had always been a one-guy girl. If I liked someone but they messed up, that was it. I would move on, and while I'd only seriously dated one boy in my life, I'd had many others who were interested, some of whom I liked a lot as well. However, once I decided that he was the one for me, I never liked the others again... even as some of them continued to pursue me even though I was already seeing someone else.“So what the hell is happening now?”I tried to concentrate for nearly three hours, doing everything from scribbling half-hearted notes to telling myself to get a grip. But every few minutes, my attention shif

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 71: Butterflies

Lake's POV The alarm buzzed beside me, dragging me out of sleep with its persistent sound. I groaned softly, eyes fluttering open to a new day, and the first thing I saw made me forget about the annoying sound entirely.Kairos was already awake, propped up on his elbow beside me and watching me. His eyes were soft, lit by something warm, and I blinked through the haze of sleep, a groggy smile tugging on my lips at the sight of my soulmate.“Good morning,” I rasped, my voice still thick with sleep, and he leaned in and kissed me gently, a soft press of lips that made my heart stir in my chest. His hand lingered on my cheek afterward, his thumb grazing against my skin as if he could not stop touching me.“Why’re you looking at me like that?” I asked, squinting up at him to divert his attention away from the blushing mess I had become.“Because you’re beautiful,” he whispered. “And you’re mine… and I love you.”Well, that definitely didn’t help, and my chest bloomed at that, a fresh wav

Lake's POV Kairos's words made my stomach turn. I didn’t know what I expected him to say, and I opened my mouth, ready to ask what that meant, but he wasn’t done. “I wanted to tell him,” he said, his voice urgent. “I wanted to tell him badly and I promise I’m not backing out. I just... I felt like it wasn’t the place.”He paused, then walked over to the sofa and sank down, leaning forward and burying his face in his hands.“I’ll make time,” he whispered. “I’ll trLake home and come out to them properly, the way I should. I meant what I said—I’m choosing you. I just thought… it would be easier somehow. I assumed Darian would have already told them everything and all I needed to do was not deny it. And when I realized he hadn’t… that it was up to me… I just…”He trailed off, his voice thinning as if it could not take the strain of his thoughts anymore, and I moved closer to him. Sitting beside him, I reached out and took his hand in mine, causing him to look up.“It’s okay,” I said soft

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 69: Faith

Kairos's POV By the time we returned to the dorm, the sky had turned a quiet ink-blue over the campus. And my thoughts turned to Lake, who I knew was probably waiting to hear from me before glancing at Darian who walked beside me, hands stuffed into his pockets. We were returning from seeing our father off. He never liked the surface; it was too dry, too exposed, and too unfamiliar. So, even though it was late and Reed's father, Micah, suggested he stay the night, he declined. The sea was treacherous at night, but he had not trLakeed alone. The royal guards remained in the water, which provided some comfort. Now it was just me and Darian, and I unlocked the door and let us in. We had not talked much since leaving the ocean, and I didn't want to continue walking around with all of this between us.So I turned towards him. “Why didn’t you expose me?” I asked, closing the door behind us, and Darian sank into the couch. He did not look at me right away, instead staring at the floor, as i

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 68: Afraid

Lux's POV "Thank you for the good time," I told Alec as he pulled up in front of my dorm, and he responded, "You are welcome."I added, "Enjoy the remainder of your day," and he reciprocated. Exiting the car, I went inside, where I was met with silence and wondered if Lake was still not home.As if he heard my thoughts, he called out, asking if that was me, to which I confirmed, a smile spreading across my face. I missed him, and it felt like we had not talked in a long time, even though we had seen each other. But the mental breakdown I had made everything feel weird."Knock, knock," I said softly, standing by his open door, and he told me to come in. "Hey," he said, and I responded by sitting next to him while he placed the box he had on the bed, which I saw was a phone."Did you buy a new phone?" He replied that it was for Kairos, which made me smile knowingly as I looked at the phone.I offered to help him wrap it after he mentioned that Kairos had misplaced his phone at the beac
