MasukAs we walked out the door the once empty porch was crowded with teens shooting dice and kids surrounding a tv playing the game.
"Ki what you got on" I hear my brother Scoot say face confused looking me up and down. "She look good don't she?" Mae says once again adding lip gloss to her lips. " If you say so" Scoot says returning to the boys playing the game. “I got next.” He said excited. "Scoot I'll be right back, I'm going to the store for Ms. Marie" I say as Mae locks arms with me and starts to walk down the stairs. “Girl he ain’t paying you no mind he too busy in that game.” Mae said walking down the steps. "Hey who dis is Mae?" A boy standing watching the dice game says pointing towards me. "Oh this Ki my new best friend" she says walking through the dice game throwing her hips from side to side. "Aye let me talk to her.” He said looking at me smiling. " Talk I'm listening." I say tilting my head trying to hold the heavy bamboo earrings I let Mae put in my ears. "I'm Ace lil mama." He says licking his lips. "Nice to meet u Ace." I say smiling still walking. "Where you going?" he says looking me up and down. I can feel my cheeks turn red. "Why you wanna know?" Mae spat back while pulling me down the street. "Can I walk with you Ms. ki? " He says grabbing my hand. "Boy no.” Mae said prying his hand off me. “Gone on back with yo lil friends." Mae said pulling me away. " Girl he a opp and he try to talk to everybody don't pay him no mind.” She said turning the corner. “What’s an opp?” I ask confused. “I got a lot of work on my hands with you.” She said rolling her eyes. “He not from over here he just come this way to try and fit in.” She explained. Still I smiled. Never being seen before, never having boys try to talk to me it gave me a rush. "Ok so we gotta work on yo walk and here put some of this on." she said breaking the trance i was in and handing me her lip gloss. "What's wrong with how I walk?” I asked taking the lip gloss putting a dab on my finger then my lips. " Girl give it here that ain't enough ." she said snatching the strawberry scented gloss and placing it on my lips. “It feels sticky.” I said rubbing it in. “That’s how you know you got on enough.” She said looking over at me. “You gotta body you gotta walk and show it off girl stop being so scary.” She said swaying my hips in rhythm with hers. "Hey Mae,what's up? Aye tell Marie imma be down there when I get off." An older man says when we walk into the store. “Ok Mr. Mack, I'll let her know as soon as I take her this Pepsi." She said all sweet like as she slides a dollar across the counter and walks towards the door. "Ok and I ain't gone say nothing about that gum you just picked up." he says laughing putting the dollar in the register. " It's people everywhere around here." I say as we walk down the block. "Girl where is you from? Why you talk like that?" she says once again frowning her face. "This Chicago it's people everywhere. " She says looking around. "I’m from Hilcrest, and what's wrong with how I speak?" I say looking down as we walk. " Giiirrrlll stop talking so proper." She says annoyed. “I’m sorry.” I said rolling my eyes. As we walked Mae made me practice talking and walking. I could feel a change. One thing I can say if Mae did nothing else for me she boosted my confidence.“Ma, put the phone on speaker and put it closer to the tv so we can hear.” I said, wishing I was there to see. “OK, hold on.” She said. “Can you hear?” “Turn it up a little, Ma.” Ki said from behind me. “That’s good.” “You know, I’ve always treated Marty like family ever since his pops died. I’d rather he stay close to me so that I can give him the proper guidance Marty would’ve wanted.” Curko’s voice came through the phone. “What did he mean by that?” Ki whispered to me. “Yeah, I see what you mean.” Marie said to Ma. “What you mean?” I asked, confused. “I told her Curko planning something, but I couldn’t explain. She had to see how he was acting.” “You think he knows something is up?” Ki asked, leaning closer to the phone. “No, I just think he has something in store for Marty. I told him I was thinking about sending him to New York, and he kinda panicked. For a split second, it was like I was ruining his plans.” “Yeah, he thought he had control of the situatio
“So how is Marty?” Curko asked as he took a screwdriver from his toolbox. “ He staying out of trouble?” “Yeah, he’s okay, just being a teen, I guess.” I answered. “He’s a good kid. Maybe he should stay in the house more. You know, keep him out of trouble.” He said, looking out the corner of his eye, trying to see my reaction. “Yeah, he’s a good kid, so I let him have a little freedom. He checks in and ain’t never been in no real trouble, so he’s okay.” “Yeah, don’t want him out there like them other youngsters. Going to jail, or worse.” He said in an almost caring tone. “You might be right.” I said, watching the slight smile he let slip. “ I think I’m going to send him to New York for a while. Let him go stay with Ant and Bells for a little bit.” “Nah, you know they wild out there. It’s best to keep him close. Don’t want him too far out there getting into trouble. I remember the stories Mack and Marty use to tell me about when they was growing up out there.” He said qui
“Ki, you cool?” I asked, watching her stare at the wall. “Yeah, just thinking.” She said, shaking her head. “Anything I can help you with.” I asked, flipping through the channels. “Trying to see how all this gone play out.” She said, lying back on the bed. “OK, so talk to me. Tell me where yo head at.” I said, turning the tv off and climbing beside her. “If Tez really take over, does that put us all at a bigger risk or do that make us safer?” “I mean, to be honest, both. It’s not like we safe now for real.” I said, knowing that wasn’t what she wanted to hear. “What you mean?” She asked, trying to sit up. “We would have more niggas behind us, but we don’t know them, so it’s bound to be a couple who gone try to fight it.” I answered as Tez knocked as he opened the door. “Y’all gone eat in here or you wanna come out here to the table?” Tez asked, fully in the room. “Up to her.” I said, looking at Ki as she struggled to sit up. “I got you, ma.” He said, putti
“Hey Ma, you cool?” I asked as she answered the phone. “Hey Marty, yeah, I’m okay. Just watching my shows while Mr. Williams fix the dishwasher.” “How he seem?” I asked, surprised he was there instead of sending someone. “I been okay. Just a little off. I think I need to stop watching so much tv.” She replied with a laugh. “Do he seem like he know anything?” “I don’t know. I haven’t been out today. Maybe that’s my problem. I’ve been cooped up in this house since we left. I’m thinking about taking a walk to the store a little later.” She said, her voice low. “That’s Marty? Tell him I said hey.”Curko asked as Ma talked. “Mr. Williams said hey, Marty.” She said, repeating what he said. “Tell him I need to talk to him a little later this week.” “Marty said he needs to talk to you a little later this week.” Ma said, sounding a little shocked. “OK, anything for him.” Curko responded. “Ma, be cool.” I said quickly as I heard her breathing quicken. “OK, Mart
“Are you okay?” Tez asked me as I sat on the couch thinking. “I should be the one asking you that.” I said, turning my head towards him. “It’s a lot, but I can’t help but feel like it’s still a lot, Ma, not telling me.” He said, shaking his head as if he could shake the thoughts from his head. “You know what we didn’t ask them doctors before you left the hospital?” He asked, smiling changing the subject. “What?” I asked, confused. “If it’s okay for me to taste you.” He said as he leaned in to kiss me. “Y’all nasty.” Mae said from the kitchen. “I’m curious how y’all gone do anything with her shoulder in that cast.” She said, bringing a bowl of fruit to me. “I have my ways.” Tez said, smiling at me before he kissed my neck. “So what’s the plan?” Quincy said, looking at Tez. “We need to get him away from the store. And away from help, and we only got one chance because if he know we coming for him, we lose the element of surprise.” Tez said as he leaned forward.
“I think we need to tell them sooner rather than later.” Keys said pulling up to my building. “I know” I admitted looking out the window. “I just don’t know how to even start.” “From the beginning.” She said turning off the car. “ You’d be surprised at what he can handle and how he’d react.” “I just don’t want him to look at me, different.” I said taking a deep breath. “Listen Dia you did what you had to do to survive, life dealt you a shitty hand and you made due with what you had.” Keys said looking around at the people walking by. “You first need to tell him where you came from, so he’ll understand why you did what you did.” She said bringing memories to me that I locked away. “Please ma help me.” I yelled as my stepdad dragged me to the basement. “She can’t help you.” He said closing the door behind us. “Why do you keep doing this to me.” I cried trying to fight him off. “Because I can, now shut up and open your mouth. And you better not bite me or you will r
