It was a busy night at the club, the colorful lights flashing and the music vibrating in the air. I was about to leave, but I spotted Lídia and decided to go say goodbye. I approached and whispered in her ear:

—I’m heading home. Need a ride?

Lídia smiled and shook her head.

—No, girl. He’s taking me.

She gestured to the guy beside her. I looked at him, and he nodded slightly. I responded with a cold smile, which he didn’t seem to notice, and murmured to Lídia:

—If you need anything, call me, okay?

She nodded, so I grabbed my bag and walked away. I made my way out of the club toward my car. I unlocked the doors, got in, and turned on the radio to break the silence of the night. I took one last look at my phone, and seeing no messages, I sighed in relief. Finally, it was time to go home.

After parking, I walked straight inside and went to the office where my father was meeting with some guests. As soon as I entered and closed the door, all the men in the room—including my father—stood up and watched me.

—Good evening, gentlemen, I greeted, maintaining my composure.

I sat in a chair beside my father, and they followed suit, resuming their seats. The visitors included Mr. Smith, a middle-aged, very elegant man; Mr. Philips, who always looked at me with an uncomfortable intensity; and finally, Félix Brown, who was accompanied by his son, Dylan.

To Beck, Dylan was the classic “playboy” type—with his relentless charm and confident demeanor, which she wasn’t sure if she loved or hated. Tall and athletic, he carried himself like someone always ready for a conquest, which only made his personality more irritating to her. His perfectly styled brown hair only reinforced that image, and his brown eyes, which always seemed to sparkle with mischief, made it clear he knew exactly the effect he had.

Dylan had a striking presence, but his carefree and somewhat annoying attitude put Beck on edge.

I knew my father had always encouraged the idea of Dylan and me having something more serious. He’s a good man, responsible, but the truth is, I’ve never seen him as anything more than a friend. Our relationship is easy, light, with no demands. We understand each other and respect boundaries. I looked at him and smiled, and he returned the gesture.

My father then stood up, drawing everyone’s attention.

—I’ve received reliable information that someone is talking about taking down our family, the Riveras, he announced, his voice firm but with a note of concern.

There was a moment of tension in the room, and Mr. Félix was the first to react.

—Let them come. Our unity won’t be shaken by any threat. And if I find out who’s behind this, that person will regret it.

Mr. Philips, who always remained silent, agreed with a stern nod. My father then picked up a sheet with some names written on it and began distributing them among those present.

—Here are the possible suspects, he said, handing a paper to each of us. —The Thomas, Collins, Gonzalez, Simmons, and finally, the Sanchez families.

I looked at the names and realized I didn’t recognize any of them. They were new and enigmatic figures to me, which only deepened the mystery. My father continued:

—I want everyone to investigate these families. Each of you will take a name and investigate however you can. I won’t accept mistakes.

After the command, everyone took a paper and began to leave. As I stood up to go, my father called me back.

—Beck, I also need your help to investigate. Use your contacts, he said, handing me an envelope.

He gave me a kiss on the cheek before returning to his serious demeanor. I left the office and went straight to my room, exhausted. As soon as I entered, the darkness was welcoming. I turned on the light and nearly jumped when I saw Dylan sitting on my bed.

—What are you doing in my room, Dylan? I asked, surprised.

He smiled, standing up and approaching me.

—I came to ease the longing.

He kissed me on the cheek, and I smiled as I stepped away to put my bag and the envelope on the table beside me. I kicked off my heels and left them on the floor, walking barefoot to the bathroom.

—Shouldn’t you be going home with your father? I asked from the bathroom as I turned on the shower.

Dylan approached the door, smiling.

—I told him I needed to talk to you about what your father asked of us. He didn’t mind.

I laughed as he watched me through the steam that was beginning to form.

—You lied to your father?

—Not exactly… We have urgent matters to discuss, don’t we?

I got out of the shower, wrapped in a towel, and approached him.

—What matters, Dylan? I asked, raising an eyebrow.

He pressed his lips to mine, picked me up, and carried me to the bed. We kissed intensely for a few moments until I pulled away and sat beside him.

—It was good to ease the longing, I commented, smiling.

Our relationship had always been like this—based on affection and respect, with no labels. He always knew the boundaries were the ones I set, and that was something that preserved our friendship.

He wrapped me in a tight hug.

—This is all crazy, isn’t it? These threats to your family…

—Threats are just words, Dylan. I’ll always be ready to defend what’s ours, I replied, determined.

—And so will I, Beck.

I slowly open my eyes and look around. I'm in a dark place, sitting on a chair, my arms tied up. I tense my muscles, trying to free myself, but it's useless. The silent environment only intensifies my fear.Suddenly, the lights come on. A man with brown hair, dark eyes, and a cold expression approaches, holding a switchblade.—So, Sleeping Beauty has woken up. Forgive us for not having a more comfortable place for you.He approaches, lightly running the switchblade along my arm. His fingers grip my chin, forcing my face up, his dark gaze fixed on me.—You have the same eyes as your mother.—I... I don’t understand. He looks at me with a cruel smile.—Let me refresh your memory. One day, we raided your house because of a debt your father and brother owed. Your mother... well, she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. She got in the way, and... we did what we had to do. The shot that hit her went through her body and hit your little brother. My body trembles with rage and pain at hi

It was a day filled with emotions and expectations. After three months of pregnancy, I felt the happiness of finally building a family with Bryan. We were excited to visit Benjamin, his father. Since we got married, I hadn’t had the opportunity to get to know him more deeply, and Bryan, always protective, thought it best to wait until the pregnancy progressed a bit more.I put on a fitted dress that accentuated my three-month baby bump and slipped into low-heeled sandals. As I finished getting ready, Bryan entered the room and hugged me from behind, caressing my belly with a tender smile.—So, are we ready to go? he asked softly.—Yes, let’s go. I replied, smiling, and he took my hand, guiding me to the car.Like a true gentleman, he opened the door for me, and soon we were on our way to Benjamin’s house. When we arrived, Benjamin was waiting for us outside, with a reserved but welcoming demeanor.—How are you, Rebeca? he asked, shaking my hand.—A bit tired because of the pregnancy,

The wedding reception was in full swing. Friends and family came to congratulate us, while I exchanged hugs and grateful smiles. At one point, I see Lidia coming toward me, and before I can say anything, she hugs me tightly.—Friend, I’m so happy for you! And this baby on the way... She speaks with a mix of emotion and joy.Soon after, Dylan approaches and hugs me with a calm smile. He leans in, speaking softly.—I’m so happy for you and for this little angel on the way.He gives me a kiss on the cheek and goes to greet Bryan. Shortly after, I see Igor approaching alone, and he gives me a friendly smile.—It was a beautiful ceremony, Beck. I wish you all the happiness... and to your baby too.He touches my belly gently and pulls me into a hug.—Thank you for coming, Igor. And Jade? Couldn’t she make it?—She had to work today, but she sent lots of good wishes for you.At that moment, my father appears beside us, looking at Igor with a cordial expression.—May I?Igor waves goodbye and

I was exhausted. The pregnancy hormones were making me sensitive, and the fatigue made me want to stay in bed all day. My mother, always attentive, insisted that I rest during the last few days while she and Lidia finished the wedding preparations. But now, finally, the big day had arrived, and a mix of emotions overwhelmed me.I put on the dress I had dreamed of and looked at myself in the mirror, trying to absorb every detail of this moment. My eyes filled with tears; I had never imagined that a day like this would be so intense. My father entered the room with a proud smile.—You look beautiful, daughter.I ran to hug him. He looked around, observing every corner of my room, as if he wanted to keep a memory.—And now this room will be empty...—Dad, I promise I’ll visit. I won’t live far away.He laughed, but with a sad tone.—Bryan managed to take you away from me.—Dad, I grew up. No one is taking me away from you. I love you.He wiped away a stubborn tear that fell.—Are you rea

In the late afternoon, the sun was already setting, painting the sky with shades of pink and gold while the guests said their goodbyes with hugs and laughter, satisfied with the celebration that had been a true success. Beck felt happy and tired after the long night, enjoying the silence that began to fill the house as everyone left. Her mother called her softly, "Beck, your father wants to talk to you both in the office."Beck exchanged a quick glance with Bryan, and he nodded, indicating they were ready for any conversation. As they entered the office, they found Beck’s father sitting with a serious expression."Have a seat."Beck and Bryan sat down in front of him, while Bryan kept a steady gaze on her father."So, young man... you caught all of us by surprise.""And I have that effect on people."Bryan replied with a slight hint of mockery, but Beck gave him a discreet nudge to control his tone."If it were up to me, I would never accept this marriage, but... I love my daughter, a

Beck arrived at the hospital feeling exhausted, even though her day had been relatively calm. In her office, she adjusted some papers, trying to stay focused, until she heard a knock on the door. It was Lidia, who entered with a wide smile and sat down in front of her.—Lidia, I wanted to invite you to my birthday celebration at my house.Lidia let out an excited squeal.—I’m finally going to see your house! I can’t wait! Is Dylan coming?—Of course! My dad loves him, and he’ll definitely invite him.—And Igor, are you going to invite him?—I am. You’re my friends, I want all of you there to celebrate with me.—If you can invite him for me, I’d appreciate it. I’m a bit tired and want to go straight home.—Don’t worry, relax! I’ll let him know.Lidia said goodbye, and Beck took advantage of the quiet to call Bryan.—Hi... I missed you. I called to see if you’re coming to my birthday party.—Of course, I’ll be there, baby.—Good. I just wanted to let you know that you don’t need to pick
