Hailey's POV

I rub my eyes, making sure I'm not imagining things.

"Jake?" My voice comes out in a tremor I don't control in time.

'How did he find me? Why is he here?'

The reality of seeing him again slams into me, and a wave of dizziness washes over me. I grip the doorpost, knuckles turning white.

I'd thought that I had gotten over Jake's betrayal, that it didn't hurt as much anymore. I convinced myself that when I saw him again, he wouldn't have any effect on me. But looking at him right now - the athletic-built, blonde-haired man I'd once been in love with - the constructed wall around my heart cracks, bringing in a flood of memories and emotions I'd thought were buried.

"So it's true, you're actually married to him." Jake's tone drips with disbelief and scorn. "I always knew you were desperate, Hailey, but this? This is far more than that."

I inhale deeply, willing myself not to let the hurt and anger show on my face. He's looking for a reaction, but I won't give

"Ooh," I lean in. "What are you drawing?" "Daddy." She lifts her book to me, showing me her art.I tip my head, trying to decipher what exactly it is, because the figure definitely doesn't look like her Dad. If anything, it could make for a swamp monster or something close to it. But at least she got the huge body right, I'll give her that. "I want to give him a surprise." I bite my lip to keep from laughing. He'll definitely be surprised when he sees it. She drops down the book, looking at me expectantly, and I realize I haven't said anything. She probably wants a compliment. "It's" I swallow "...beautiful. Really brings out his eyes—" if the fact that the eyes are bulging out of their sockets has anything to say about it— "I wish I could draw as good as you." My words seem to satisfy her as she beams. "I can teach you. Daddy says I'm very talented." Of course he does. I chuckle. "You'd do that for me?" She nods. "I don't think I could ever be as good as you, though." She r

"I got it. Why don't you take this instead." I trade the bottle for two eggs. She collects them and walks over to the counter, seemingly relieved that she didn't have to do much work. I grab the remaining ingredients from the fridge and close the door before going to join her. Once everything’s on the counter, I mimic her stance, with my hands on my hips. "Now what?" She's so cute, standing like a little boss in the large kitchen. I decide to let her do her own thing so she feels comfortable around me. She seems like a quiet girl, and if being in charge here gets her out of her shell, then I'm willing to let her instruct me. "You have to put me on the counter first. I can't see anything from down here."Oh, right. I forgot. She'd probably been staring at the marble tiles all this time. I laugh and lift her up gently. Then, I repeat my question. She places her hand under her chin, tapping thoughtfully. "Uncle Lev always washes his hands first. Daddy says dirt makes us sick and

Hailey's POV A knock startles me, making my book slip from my hands and land with a soft thud on the floor.Today’s a rest day—I called in sick, blaming my aching back, even though I’m barely showing. Maybe it’s the pregnancy, or maybe I’m just lazy. Either way, I saw an excuse not to go to work, and I took it. Besides, I needed the peace and quiet to brainstorm strategies for the business. If I don’t get things moving soon, I’ll be too far along to start. And once the baby comes, I doubt I’ll have the time or energy. I feel like I'd get tired and give up if I wait that long. Plus, Levi might not still be around to support me once our deal ends. The knock sounds again, confirming I didn't just imagine it. I sigh, picking up the book and setting it on the table. With a frown, I move toward the door. My phone’s on airplane mode, so no one should be dropping by. That only leaves Levi. But why would he knock? "You really like—" The words die in my throat as I open the door and see E

Levi's POV One perk of being your own boss is that you get to take a day off without having to answer to anyone. That's not the case for me.My plan for today was to stay home and relax. But of course, things never go that smoothly.Just as I was starting to settle in and relax, Dad called, claiming he needed something from the office. He's always got the wrong timing. I’m convinced the man has some kind of radar for detecting when I’m finally in a good mood.I sigh as I pull into my designated parking spot. With a deep breath, I grab my phone and laptop off the passenger seat and step out of the car, heading inside.Halfway to the building, I notice someone approaching from the other side.Well, look who it is. Jake doesn't spot me, too buried in his phone. A smirk tugs at my lips. When he finally tucks his phone away, there's a deep frown on his face, which only deepens when he sees me. "Good morning," he grumbles, brushing past me. "Jake," I call, just before he slips throug

Jake's POV "You didn't have to lie to me, you know? " Charlotte says, her voice tight. "If you'd just been honest, I wouldn't have found out the way I did."It's been three weeks, and she's still fixated on the opinion that I lied to her about my position at work. But if anyone should be having an issue about this, it should be me. Like I said when she barged into my office uninvited—I never told her anything about my job in the first place. I thought we'd already established that. But clearly, she still isn't willing to let go."I still can't get over the embarrassment, Jake." She paces the room, her naked breasts bouncing with every angry step. She’d come on to me, and I thought maybe—finally—we were going to have sex again. But no. She was baiting me, waiting for the perfect moment to drag this damn conversation back up. A conversation that should've been over with weeks ago.We haven't had sex in almost a month, and I really thought she wanted to fix that. But no. It almost seem

Levi's POV I don't know what I was expecting when I left Hailey with the guys. But what I do know, is that I wasn't expecting to come back to her laughing, with a video game controller in hand. I'd heard her voice from the corridor and I just assumed I was hearing wrong or something, but seeing this? I don't know how to feel. Despite her nerves whenever she's introduced to new people, she still manages to blend into any group so easily. And that's one thing I lov—like, about her. I stay by the door, not stepping in fully, just watching as she mashes buttons like she’s trying to break the controller. Jonathan, one of the guys, is sitting close—too close. He’s guiding her hands on the controller and leans in to whisper something that makes her giggle. A flare of jealousy hits me hard. She can laugh and flirt with anyone she wants, and there’s nothing I can do to stop her. Resisting the urge to walk over there and throw him off the couch, I remain where I am, trying not to be tha

Hailey's POV As we start walking again, I ask, "How’d you two meet?" "Funny story." Levi smiles. "We met at therapy. He was there because he couldn't control his temper. I was there... well, you know why.." I nod. "He was already a gym instructor, and that seemed to make him more violent. He beat up someone, so court-ordered therapy instead of jail time." I gasp. "Why?" Levi chuckles. "In his words, he didn't want to sit in an office to talk about his feelings. But he had to do that because of his daughter. I'm sure he'd have taken the six months in jail over therapy. But he compromised for the little girl." We enter into a corridor flanked by transparent glass doors on each side. "That's the gym," Levi gestures at the door on the right. Though it's already obvious. "Pool's on the left." We move further. "Have you met his daughter?" I ask. "Yeah. She was three when we started," Levi answers. "Now she's six—almost seven. And she's the sweetest kid ever." "Tha

Hailey's POV We get into the car and Levi begins the drive back home. It goes on in comfortable silence until my stomach growls loud enough to make me wince. I sneak a glance at Levi, but he seems too focused on the road to notice. At least that is what I think. Without a word, he takes a detour from the usual route home. "This isn't the way home," I say, frowning. "Where are we going?" He doesn't answer. A few minutes later, we pull into a McDonald's drive-thru. "Why are we here?" I ask, confused. "Isn't it obvious?" he replies. A server leans out from the window. "Good afternoon. What would you like to order?" Levi looks at me. "What do you want?" "A double cheeseburger and fries," I reply. "And an iced latte too," I add as an afterthought. It might be late in the afternoon, but there's never a wrong time for coffee. Plus, I missed my usual morning cup of coffee. I was feeling quite nauseous, and the strong smell of coffee only seemed to make it grow worse. Hopeful

Hailey's POV "That's enough," Matt cuts in, clapping his hands. Finally. He turns away from the camera, his gaze narrowing when it lands on me. I'm starting to believe Levi pays people to favor him. First, the photographer. And now, Matt. I wasn't even the one starting up the argument! It's just not fair. "Yes," the cameraman agrees. "That was perfect. There was a lot of chemistry between you two—though I shouldn't be surprised, you're married," he smiles. The first time I've seen him smile at me today. Hallelujah. "You both did a good job. Hailey, if I knew being with your husband was all it took for you to get it right, we'd have done this first," he jokes... I think. Levi squeezes my shoulders. "You see? I'm your good luck charm." I snort. Hardly. "For the photos, we’re switching things up. Levi sits on the stool, and Hailey...you’ll sit on his lap.""What?!" I blurt before I can stop myself. I clamp my hands over my mouth, my eyes widening. "Sorry. That was... uncalled
