Laura pushed the door to Alex's bedroom open and stopped frozen in shock.
Alex, her boyfriend, was busy making out with cassie her best friend. They were in a compromising position. The image seared itself into her brain, and Laura felt like she had been punched in the gut. "Alex!!!" She yelled, her voice shaking as tears started welling up in her eyes. The both of them quickly slid under the sheets, and Alex faced her with cold eyes. "Surprised?" He raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean by surprised ?" She asked. "Isn't it obvious? You no longer have my time. You're always busy with your brother and work. Honestly, George is going to die anyway. So, stop trying, " Alex snapped. Aurora's anger boiled over. She felt a surge of adrenaline coursing through her veins. She was trying her best to be optimistic about George's health, but Alex's words cut deep. She stormed to the side of his bed. Before he could react, her hand flew out and slapped him across the cheeks, sending his head tilting sideways. "You can say all you want about me, but don't you ever dare open your filthy mouth and talk about my brother," she snarled. With that, she turned and ran out of the apartment. The tears she was holding back had started streaming down her cheeks freely. She was late for work and couldn't find a cab. She quickly wiped her tears and took off on foot. After about 30 minutes of running, she arrived at the restaurant, gasping for breath. She quickly wiped her tears and composed herself before pushing the door open. The restaurant was meant for elites only. And the atmosphere was calm as usual. She spotted John her colleague, coming out from the kitchen, and she ran to him. "Is Mrs Miller around?" She asked. "Ehm... she came about an hour ago," John replied. "Oh God, I'm doomed," She muttered. "Quickly get dressed in your uniform before she comes out," John said as he glanced at the door leading to Mrs Miller office to see if she was coming. "Ok," Laura nodded, running into the staff's changing room. She quickly changed and emerged only to find Mrs Miller waiting for her, a Stern expression on her face. "And what's your excuse for today ?" Mrs Miller asked. "I'm... I'm sorry, please. I couldn't find a ride here," Aurora quickly apologized. "Sorry? Be sorry for yourself. You're fired!" Mrs Miller half yelled. Laura's eyes widened in horror. She couldn't lose this job. George's medical bills are there, and her rent was almost due. She lost her other jobs last week, and this was the only one she had left. "Please don't do this, Ma'am. I really need the money for my brother's hospital bills, please, I'm begging you," Aurora fell on her knees pleading. "I don't care. I won't have you coming to my restaurant late every single time and always trying to cook up an excuse or an apology. That's it. Take off my uniform and leave these premises now!" Mrs Miller yelled. Aurora searched her face to see if it held a single remorse, but she saw none. All she saw was anger and hate. Right from the start, Mrs Miller didn't like her, but she tried her best to please the old witch but couldn't. Fresh tears start rolling down her cheeks as she grabs Mrs Miller's legs. "Please don't do this to me. Please ma'am. My brother's life is in your hands, I need this job, please," Aurora cried. "Get those filthy hands of me. Your freaking brother's life isn't in my hands," Mrs Miller snapped, shaking Aurora off her leg. "Leave for the last time, or I'll call the cops," She threatened. Laura knew that was it for her. She was officially jobless and heartbroken. She changed back into her casual clothes and left the restaurant reluctantly. Her mind was messed up as different thoughts ran through it. She didn't even know whether to go home or to the hospital to check on George. His cancer was surely eating him up. She was already owing the hospital, and his medication bills were the only thing she was able to clear. Her phone rang from her pocket, disrupting her thoughts. Without checking the caller's ID, she brought the phone out and answered the call before placing it on her ear. "Hello," she whispered. "Hello, Miss Jacobs, this is Doctor Connor speaking," the caller said. Her eyes widened as she regretted picking the call. She was trying to avoid any call from the hospital lately because of the bills. "Ehm...Doc... Doctor... Connor. How may I help you?"Aurora stuttered. "You have not been picking up my calls, but thank goodness you did today. George's condition has taken a turn for the worst, and we need to perform an urgent transplant. One of his organs is down," Doctor Connor informed. "How much will it cost," Aurora asked, knowing fully well they'll ask for money. "$7,000" Doctor Connor replied. Her eyes instantly widened. Where was she going to get that amount from, she bearly had $2,000 on her. She quickly ended the call and shoved her phone back into her pocket. This was it. She was finally hopeless. She couldn't watch George die, but on second thought, she couldn't do anything currently. A thought suddenly crossed her mind, and she stared at the story building ahead of her. "If I can't watch you die, I might as well die before you," she muttered, proceeding into the building. She cried as she ran up the stairs leading to the rooftop. All the memories she had with George came playing back in her head in vivid flashes. More tears fell from her eyes as she got to the rooftop. The night breeze was cold as it blew by, pushing her hair forward, making it cover her face. She quickly tucked her hair behind her ears, approaching the edge. "I'm sorry, George," she mumbled, closing her eyes. Just as was about to jump, a muscular hand encircled around her waist, pulling her back. "Ahhhhh!" She screamed as they both fell backward, with she landing on top of him.Laura couldn't sleep. The clock said two in the morning. Her eyes were wide open, staring at the ceiling. She kept seeing her face, that girl who looked just like her. It scared her so bad. Her heart wouldn't slow down. She tossed and turned in the sheets. They felt too hot and sticky against her skin. She sat up and hugged her knees to her chest. She tried to breathe slow, but it didn't help. The room was dark, except for the little light from the hallway slipping under the door. She heard footsteps, soft on the carpet, then a knock. Scott's voice came through, low and worried. He said, "Laura, you awake?" She said, "Yes." He opened the door and came in. He was in his boxers, his hair was messy from sleep. He looked at her with those eyes that always made her feel safe, but tonight they looked dark and intense. He closed the door behind him. He walked over to the bed and sat down next to her. He put his hand on her shoulder and asked, "What's wrong?" She said, "I can't stop thin
Scott stared at Laura for a while. “Yes, I can,” he said, and he walked over to his desk in the corner of the room and picked up his phone like he was already done with the conversation. “And I will. The bodyguards will be here soon, so I suggest you go upstairs and get ready to meet them.” “I’m not going anywhere.” Laura crossed her arms over her chest and stood there, trying to look defiant even though inside she felt like she wanted to scream. Scott looked up from his phone, and she could see he was getting really annoyed now because his jaw was tight and his eyes were hard. “Laura go upstairs now.” “No.” She said it louder this time because she was so angry at him for treating her like a child who couldn’t make her own decisions. Scott put his phone down and walked back over to her, and this time when he grabbed her, it was rougher. He pulled her right up against him so she could feel how tense he was. “I’m trying to keep you safe. Why can’t you understand that?” “I understa
After lunch, Scott told Laura to meet him in the living room because he had something important to tell her, but he wouldn’t say what it was over the phone when his assistant called her. So, she went downstairs wondering what was going on now, because everything felt like it was spinning out of control lately, with the woman who looked like her and the investigator coming tomorrow. When she got to the living room, Scott was already there, standing by the window and looking out at the gardens. He turned around when he heard her come in, so she walked over to the couch and sat down because she was tired from not sleeping well last night and from all the stress of the morning. “What did you want to talk about?” she asked him because he looked serious, and that made her nervous about what he was going to say. Scott didn’t sit down, though. Instead, he just stood there, looking at her with that cold expression on his face that he used when he was about to tell her something she wasn’t
Chapter 21: Morning QuestionsLaura opened her eyes. The first thing she noticed was that Scott was gone. The bed felt cold where he had been like he had left a while ago. She sat up slowly because her whole body hurt. She could feel soreness down there that reminded her of everything they did last night, her face got warm thinking about it.She looked around the huge bedroom. Everything was quiet except for some birds outside the window. She wondered what time it was, she wondered where Scott went without waking her up and the sheets were all messy. There were pillows on the floor, it made her remember how rough he had been with her. It also made her remember how much she liked it even though part of her thought she shouldn’t.Laura got out of bed. Her legs felt weak, she had to hold onto the nightstand for a moment before she could walk right. She saw his shirt lying on the floor near the bed, picked it up and put it on because she didn’t want to walk around naked looking for him. A
Laura's mouth fell open in surprise. She wasn't sure she had heard George right. She had been there today? But she knew she had been home all day and hadn't stepped out for a minute. Scott's head sprang up to look at her. He raised a brow in question. He knew she had been home all day, his guards had kept eyes on her but who knew? Maybe she had found a way out. “You're sure you saw me there George?" Laura asked again just to make sure. George nodded, his brows furrowed in confusion and she could see the worry slide into his eyes. “Of course I did. Don't you think I know what my only and favorite sister looks like?" Laura forced a laugh. She didn't exactly find it funny but she didn't want to freak George out. She knew she hadn't been there which meant someone like her had been there and it meant danger was close. She tried to shove the feeling of restlessness away. She asked him some questions about his health and how his treatment was going. "It's going really well sis. I was t
SCOTT'S MANSIONA few days had gone by of quiet days and Laura had observed a slight change. Scott hadn't left the house in days. He had either been in his office or room or the library. Never out for any meetings. She also noticed that apart from dinner, he hadn't requested her presence. She had wondered why but hadn't gotten any clues. Had something gone wrong with the deal? Or was someone after him? Molly had left home too after a while and Laura had been relieved for that. At least that was one less issue. She didn't want the woman around at all if she could help it and now she could move around freely. She had to talk to Scott. She needed to know how George was doing. If there was any progress or if it was just as static. Since the bills and seven thousand dollars had been cleared, the doctors would pay him attention. She sat up from the bed she had been laying in. She had just heard his office door shut. He would either be going into it or out of it and she wanted to talk to
