“What?! Me?” I flinched to my feet without a second notice, my heart flipping scarily in its rib.

He wants me to be his Luna? No way, it must have been a misheard from my end. But he proved me wrong when his response came and it was an affirmative nod.

“That’s the deal. Sparing two lives doesn't come cheap so the price had to be heavy. Or do you have a problem with that?” He arched a pale brow and I swallowed hard, saying nothing.

Of all the things I expected, this kind of proposal wasn’t one of them. And now, all I could think about was how I didn’t deserve a position that powerful, even if I was trading my life for it.

I could feel the tension in the room, as I nervously fiddled with my dress, looking anywhere else but in his direction. I knew my whole life was in my hands, and whatever I chose now could either mess everything up or change things for the better. And yet, the moment I found my voice, I picked the one option that could ruin me— refusing the offer. As tempting as it was.

“I—I’m sorry but I don’t think I am the right person for this. What you’re offering is a position too high for me to claim without being its rightful owner.” My heart beating out of my chest, I blurted out. Only for my breath caught as the temperature suddenly felt too hot.

My head shot up before I even realized it, and I found him standing too closely before me, his sharp eyes inserted into my skull as though he was already thinking of digging my grave.

“Alethea Maddox,” He started, his jaw flexing as he uttered my name. “You don’t get to decide for me who’s worthy of being my Luna. I make my own decision. Now, leave.” He rasped, turning away from me and striding toward his seat, or so I thought. Instead, he halted at the table, snatched the document, and I gasped out loud.

Realization smacked me in the face like a brick and it was all it took for me to snap back into my senses. I was supposed to understand I had to do this. This kind of chance comes only once in a lifetime, and I am in no place to care if I was deserving of the offer or not.

Moreover, the guilt of not signing the contract and getting my sister killed when I could have gotten to save her would forever hunt me.

“No, Alpha. Please, don’t.” I darted towards the entryway, blocking his path and his glare was horrific. “I take back my words. I’ll sign the paper now, please.” I said and tried to act as pitiful as I could. Although I wasn’t entirely sure he was going to give me another chance.

To be honest with myself, there’s nothing more I could ask for other than the Luna position as it was exactly all I needed to exact my revenge. Thinking of Karl and my ex-friend together makes my skin crawl and by every means, I want to give them a taste of their own medicine.

“You just refused it and it couldn’t have been more crystal clear you’re truly not cut for this. So now, I think I'd rather get someone else too.” He clenched his fist beside him as he casually strode to me. “Someone who’s not a fucking coward and at the same time dumb.” He swore, not sparing me a backward glance before he pushed me out of the way and walked past.

I almost stumbled but spun around just in time to balance myself on my feet and also glare at his disappearing figure. My jaw locked, and I swear I could hear my own heartbeat. That’s how mad I was.

Agreed, there possibly could be no one as dumb as me in this whole planet but did he just call me a coward? I have been a weakling all my life and I was tired of the title following me around all my life. Now finally when I thought it could use some break, he’s spelling it out to me?

Understood, he was an Alpha but shouldn’t that make him any less of an asshole?

“If I’m a coward, what the hell does that make you? Acting all high and mighty when you’re the one who crawled in here hoping I’d do you a favour!” I screamed at him, my rage boiling over, even though I knew too well I shouldn’t. He was just one step away from disappearing for good. And just like that, his men might as well finish me off.

I sighed in definite fear, slumping to my knees with tears clouding my eyes. A lot was going through my head and running wasn’t a part of them. His men would come in anytime soon… I can’t escape it.

“You have no idea what you’re signing up for. As soon as you sign this, there’s no getting out of it.” I heard the rough voice say and snapped my head upright to see whom I believed was long gone standing at the doorway like he never left.

“You…” I blinked, stunned. “Even after what I said, you’re still letting me sign it?” I looked at the document in his hand with dismay. For a second, I couldn’t move.

I waited for his response, and a simple nod from him was all it took for me to rise to my feet. I stepped forward and took the document from him, offering a quick smile as I stepped back.

But he was looking at me strangely, like there was something else I didn’t know yet.

That look alone made my heart skip. I lowered my eyes and flipped the pages, suddenly needing to read through it faster.

The moment my eyes caught the contents, my shoulders dropped. I couldn’t stop my fingers from shaking, and before I knew it, the paper slipped from my hands and hit the floor.

Wait—what?

As if being a fake Luna wasn’t insane enough… Now I was supposed to carry his child and be his surrogate too?

I stared at the words, my brain refusing to believe what my eyes were seeing.

TWENTY SEVENALETHEA“Hey!” He didn’t back off and followed me. I could swear I was almost forced to whip back around, and tell him off, but I knew it was of no use because he would have if he wanted to. I was hoping to have some alone time here, where I believed no one could find me, only for him to appear out of nowhere and ruin it. Without a doubt, he must have been trailing after me on my way here. Was he doing this to frustrate me even more? Don’t tell me like his wife taking the most precious thing to me wasn’t enough, he’s trying to convince me otherwise that he’s nothing like her? Yeah, good try. “Can we talk for a moment?” He voiced again and I resisted the urge to roll my eyes. He’d already caught up with me. “No.” I threw back at him, not even a second in between. I shouldn’t be conversing with him. Since he wouldn’t leave me to have my breathing space here, I’d rather head back home. “I repeat, I want to have a word with you. I’m not ordering this as Zelda’s mate,

TWENTY SIXDAMON “You heard all she said, didn’t you? She has to be punished accordingly.” Zelda fumed, grabbing my hand but I jerked her off, throwing her off. She hesitated for a second as if to come to terms with what just happened, then her eyes widened. She couldn’t believe I had just disregarded her. What she didn’t know was that I was pissed to the core, and could do so much more than that if she didn't stop whining like some toddler. “Do not follow me.” I couldn’t take it anymore and gave her a clear warning. I could imagine her heart palpitating in horror as I then strode in, the door slamming behind me while she’s left standing outside. As I sat behind my desk, the silence that descended in the room was oppressive. Jaw clenched, I rubbed the back of my neck as though to ease the tension but nothing was working. Nothing could ease the anger bubbling deep inside me. Now I realize, Zelda isn’t always bluffing. She infact, means whatever comes out of her mouth and I hated

TWENTY FIVE My sister’s mouth hung open, stunned by Zelda’s guts but my chest rose in anger and I found myself seething. Done taking her nonsense, I was prepared to retort when a voice came suddenly from behind us. “Did I hear you right? You aborted who, Zelda?” Alpha Damon’s voice boomed through the room, and my sister and I jolted at the same time in shock. Zelda’s face paled as she looked over at the door and found him there. “I promise you, it’s… not what you think.” She muttered in a very low voice, walking towards him with cautious steps and my face twisted into that of disgust. I didn’t think I could bear watching her all act lovey dovey towards him like she hadn’t just committed a murder. No one told me before I held my sister’s hand, and we turned around. We have nothing more to do here. “Then explain to me. You’ll clear things up, won’t you?” As much as he was glaring at her, his voice tight with frustration, I couldn’t bring myself to believe it wasn’t all just pretens

TWENTY FOUR I stayed in the bathtub for longer than I cared to know. I continued to stare blankly at the ceiling, my eyes dry and face void of any sort of emotions. I knew it was just for now, and I’d be back to crying my eyes out after I’m out of here and still, I wanted this moment. Lena hasn’t shown up since I left her in the hallway. I don’t know why, all I know is nothing could be wrong. For now, it’s best to believe the task of cleaning up the blood was what’s taking her so much time. “Luna Alethea!” The pounding on my room’s door was so loud it kicked me back to reality and out of my head. “What do you want?” I didn’t bother to stand up, and rather just mind-linked her. Her response came in almost immediately and her voice was fidgety. “Your sister is creating a scene with Luna Zelda. I…I think it’s best you come and see for yourself.” She broke the bombshell and before she could have her next blink, I wrapped a towel around myself and was out of the bathroom. I stepped i

TWENTY THREEDamn, that sly wolf in sheep clothing. How dare she cause me a miscarriage?! Does she have no conscience? How dare she? I could spend hours here at the same spot raging but I needed to call for help first. They night still be able to save my baby. It was tough but one step at a time and I reached the door. Opening it, I stepped out and the first thing I did was to look in every direction of the hallway. To my absolute shock, I sighted no one, not even the guards; even though it was early in the morning. I grounded my teeth as something dawned on me. This was also Zelda’s handiwork. Gosh, that evil witch. I thought she was only cruel, but evidently, she’s the worst to ever exist in the werewolf world. A person like her doesn’t deserve to live in this world, talk more of being blessed with a high position, and a powerful mate. Evidence that the moon goddess is really unfair. I fisted my hands, and began to move. I can’t just wait for a helper to drop from the sky and

TWENTY TWOThere was horror on my face as I saw her standing at the door. She’d opened the door and had probably been there for a while without me noticing. I scrambled down from the bed to hide behind the bed’s headrest, my heart racing. My ears are perked up for when she lifts a foot, and the instant I heard her footsteps, my face was filled with shock. I could swear, I would have peed my pants if I didn’t hold it back just in time before it could drop. “Get out of there.” Zelda said, and I was surprised at how calm her voice sounded. However, I wasn’t convinced. It was probably just a camouflage. “N—No.” I answered firmly, my voice cracking. My gaze remained on her approaching red heels, fear filling me. What if she drags me out of here? I actually wouldn’t put it above her to use some force. “I’m some ghost you have to hide away from?” She chuckled, more to herself than me, and if I wasn’t mistaken, she stopped walking. It was just a few feet from me but still, I exhaled a sh
