I stared at that last sentence for a very long time.

The black ink looked ordinary, yet it felt like handcuffs already locked around both of my wrists.

Non-cancelable.

I closed the folder slowly. My chest felt tight. My hand almost reached for the pen that had been placed on the bedside table, but I stopped.

No.

I could not sign this tonight because I was not foolish. If I signed it, my life would truly be over.

I put the folder back on the table. I took a deep breath and hugged my knees on the large bed. This room was far too luxurious for me.

That night, I did not sleep.

I only stared at the high ceiling of the room while thinking about one thing. I had to ask again.

The next morning, sunlight streamed in through the large window. I was still wearing last night’s clothes because I had not truly slept.

At exactly eight o’clock, a servant knocked on the door.

“Miss Lucia, Mr. Alexandro is waiting for you for breakfast.”

I swallowed.

All right. This was my chance.

I walked down to the dining room with slow steps. The room was long, with a large wooden table and tall chairs neatly arranged. At the end of the table, he was already seated.

Alexandro De Luca.

He was wearing a dark gray casual suit. His hair was neatly styled. His face was just as cold as it had been last night.

In his hand was a cup of black coffee.

He drank it calmly without even glancing at me.

I stood there for a few seconds before finally sitting in a chair quite far from him. A servant placed breakfast in front of me, but I did not touch it.

He still did not look at me.

As if I were merely part of the room’s decoration.

Annoyance began to creep into my chest.

I might have no power in this house, but I was not a statue.

“I haven’t signed the contract,” I finally said.

There was no reaction. He lifted his cup again and took a slow sip of coffee.

I clenched my fist under the table.

“I want to ask again.”

Silence.

At last, he spoke without turning his head.

“Asking will not change anything.”

His voice was flat and calm.

“I don’t care. This concerns my life.”

He set his cup down slowly on the table. The sound echoed clearly in the silent room, and then he lifted his face.

His gaze pierced straight into me.

“What do you want to know?”

I swallowed, but this time I did not lower my eyes.

“Why me?”

He stared at me for a long moment without blinking.

“I’m not the most beautiful, and you don’t even know me,” I said.

He leaned back in his chair.

“You think this is about beauty?”

“I know this is about my uncle’s debt. Then why not Elena? She could also be forced to become your wife,” I said.

“I don’t like women who are too confident,” Alexandro said.

“And I’m not?”

“You?” He looked at me from head to toe. “You’re trembling just standing there.”

I took a deep breath. “What if I refuse to sign?”

He picked up his napkin and wiped the corner of his lips with a casual movement.

“The wedding will still happen.”

He stood up slowly. His height made his shadow fall over part of my body.

I stood as well without realizing it.

“The contract says you’re free to be with any woman, but I’m not allowed to speak to another man. That’s very unfair,” I said.

He stared at me for a long time.

“This marriage is not about fairness.”

“Then what is it about?”

“Control.”

One word.

Simple.

Cruel.

I felt something inside me shift, no longer just fear. A small anger began to grow.

“I’m not a doll,” I said softly but clearly.

He stepped closer. The distance between us was now too close. I could smell the faint masculine scent from his body.

“You’d better stay quiet and follow my orders,” Alexandro said.

I lifted my chin, forcing myself to look at him without stepping back.

“My position is not beneath your feet.”

“You’re getting bold,” he said.

“I just don’t want to be treated like this,” I replied.

He was silent for a few seconds, then said, “Sign the contract.”

“Answer one more question.”

He did not respond immediately.

“What?”

“If this is only about control and debt, why don’t you look satisfied? Why do you keep watching me as if there’s something you’re searching for?” I asked.

The room seemed to tighten. For a fraction of a second, his expression changed. Very slight. Almost invisible. Then he returned to being cold.

“You think too much.”

“That’s not an answer.”

He stepped back.

“You will sign that contract today.”

“I won’t,” I answered.

He looked at me sharply.

“Don’t test my patience, Lucia.”

His voice was not raised, but it was enough to send a chill down my spine.

He turned around and walked out of the dining room without looking back.

I stood there alone, my hands trembling, no longer from fear but from frustration.

He did not look at me while drinking his coffee, but every time I fought back, his eyes changed.

I looked at his cup, still half full at the end of the table.

His words echoed in my mind.

All right.

If that was what he thought of me, perhaps it was time for him to learn that he was wrong.

I turned and walked back to my room.

The black folder was still lying on the table. I stared at it for a long time before sitting down.

My hand touched the pen.

My eyes fell on the clause that had made my chest tighten last night.

Feelings were not included in the agreement.

A faint smile curved my lips.

In that case...

He would never be ready to face what he could not control about me, and I began to arrange my own little plan.

Alexandro's Pov.After hours of wrestling with endless piles of documents and reports, I finally decided to go home. Not to the mansion, but to the hospital. I had been away from Lucia and my children for too long. Work could wait, but my family couldn't.I showered at the office, changed into a clean suit that I always kept in the spare closet. I combed my hair, trimmed my beard that had started to grow thick, and put on Lucia's favorite perfume. I wanted to look fresh for her and knew she didn't like it when I looked tired and disheveled. On the way to the hospital, I bought a box of her favorite chocolates and a bouquet of red roses. I also brought small toys for our babies. Colorful star-shaped toys. I didn't know if they could see them yet, but I wanted to give them something. When I arrived at the hospital, I walked quickly to Lucia's room. I opened the door slowly, afraid of disturbing her if she was sleeping. But she wasn't sleeping. She was sitting up in bed, holding one of o

Alexandro's Pov.After Lucia was moved to the recovery room and her condition began to stabilize, I could finally breathe a sigh of relief. The doctor said she had passed the critical period. Her heart was back to normal. Her blood pressure was stable. She just needed complete rest and plenty of nutrition.I spent two full days by her side, never leaving the hospital. But work was piling up. Business couldn't stop. There were reports to sign, decisions to make, and meetings that couldn't be postponed."I have to go to the office," I told Lucia that morning.I had already showered and changed clothes, even though the sun hadn't fully risen yet. I sat beside her bed, holding her hand, which had started to grow warm again. Earlier, I had hugged her tightly and kissed her forehead."I'll be back as soon as I can.""I understand. Go, Ale. I'm fine. Gianna and Davina are here. My mother is also coming.""I'll call every hour.""You don't have to...""I'll call. No one can stop me."I kissed

Alexandro's Pov.I was still sitting beside Lucia's bed, holding her hand, which was starting to grow warm again. Her eyes were still closed, but her breathing was steady. The doctor said she would wake up in a few hours. I waited. I would wait as long as it took. The door opened without a knock. Two uniformed police officers entered with firm steps. Their faces were serious, without smiles. One of them pulled out a badge and showed it to me."Mr. Alexandro De Luca?"I looked at them. "Yes.""We're from the police. We need you to come with us."I blinked. "What's this about?""There are some matters we need to clarify. We ask for your cooperation."I looked at Lucia. I didn't want to leave her, but I also didn't want to cause a commotion in front of her."Can't this be done here?""I'm sorry, sir. It's procedure. We have to take you to the police station."I sighed. I stood up, carefully releasing Lucia's hand."I'll go, but I need to inform my guard.""Of course."I walked to the doo

Alexandro's Pov. The next day, the ICU door opened. I was still sitting in the chair beside Lucia's bed, my hand still holding hers. I hadn't slept all night. My eyes were red, my face was haggard, but I didn't care. All I cared about was Lucia, still lying unconscious in front of me. Two people entered. Abraham and Mona. I turned my head. Their faces were tense. Abraham walked quickly toward me, his eyes immediately fixed on Lucia, pale and covered in tubes. Mona followed behind, her expression unreadable. "Alexandro, how is she?" Abraham asked. I sighed. "Still unconscious. The doctor said there were post operative complications. Her blood pressure dropped drastically. Her heart stopped beating." Abraham fell silent. His face turned pale. "Her heart stopped?" "For a moment. But they managed to restart it." Abraham shook his head. "I can't believe this is happening. She's so strong." "She is strong, but her body was too exhausted." Mona approached Lucia's bed. She

Alexandro's Pov.I stood outside the operating room. My hands and face were still wet with tears. I couldn't stop the tears that kept streaming down my cheeks.Inside that room, Lucia lay on the operating table. Her thin body, which had carried two babies for eight months, now looked so small on the cold white table. The doctors and nurses moved quickly around her, whispering to each other with tense faces."Sir, we need to move your wife to the ICU. Her condition is still unstable," a doctor said.I didn't hear clearly. I only saw how they pushed Lucia's bed out of the operating room. I wanted to follow, but my feet felt heavy. I wanted to scream, but my voice was gone. I could only stand there, staring at my pale wife lying there, with tubes attached to her body."Sir, you need to wait outside the ICU. The doctor will examine your wife further."I nodded. I couldn't speak. I could only sit on the hard plastic chair in front of the ICU room, staring at the closed door. Behind that do

Lucia's Pov.The car sped through the night. Street lights flickered quickly behind the window glass. I was still holding Alexandro's hand, feeling the cold sweat on his palm. The contractions grew stronger, more frequent. I bit my lip, trying to hold back the moans that wanted to escape."Hold on a little longer. We're almost there," Alexandro said in a voice that tried to sound calm, but I could feel the panic behind his words.I just nodded. I couldn't speak. The pain spread from my stomach to my back, to my hips, to my entire body. I closed my eyes, trying to focus on my breathing. Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in. Breathe out.The car stopped in front of the hospital emergency entrance. Alexandro got out quickly, opening the door on my side. He carried me out of the car, even though my body was heavy, even though my belly was huge, he still carried me like I weighed nothing."Help! My wife is going into labor!" Alexandro shouted. The nurses ran toward us with a wheelchair. The
