Chapter 1

“Vixen! Thought you could hide from us?”

They dragged me out of the basement as easily as if they were hauling away a discarded rag. Then, they hit me with a metal pipe, and I heard the sickening thud of metal striking my bone.

“This woman sure is stubborn. We bent the pipe from hitting her, and she still hasn't made a sound!”

They laughed, their eyes gleaming with excitement. Following that, a burst of agony shot through my left hand. The pain was so unbearable that a muffled groan finally escaped my lips.

One of the thugs raised a bloodstained knife and tossed aside the finger he had just severed.

He said excitedly, “Heh. She finally cried out in pain. Now this is satisfying.”

I squeezed my eyes shut and bit down hard on my lip. My face was deathly pale, and I no longer had the strength to make a sound.

“Hah, it looks like she's challenging us.”

One of them pulled out a red-hot iron rod and waved it in front of me.

“I’d like to see how you stay quiet after this.”

When the glowing metal slammed into my chest, a scream tore from my throat, and the men looked thoroughly pleased.

“Oh my God, listen to that scream! Get over here and look at this!”

“I can't watch…” Lucien's voice sounded from the connection. There was pain in his tone, yet it was mixed with something cruel. “It'll be over soon. As soon as they throw her into the chemical pool, I'll enter the storyline and save her.”

“That's a toxic chemical tank! She could die in there, Lucien! I think this has gone far enough. The story’s mission doesn't necessarily require her to suffer through every single torture scene–”

“No!” Lucien cut his friend off immediately. “I have to make sure the entire storyline plays out exactly as written. If the mission doesn’t go as planned, then Emily will be the one forced to suffer all of this instead, and she'll die. Olivia is the protagonist. The story will protect her. As long as I show up in time, she'll be fine.”

His friend sounded confused. “If you care so much about Emily, why did you marry Olivia in the first place? Why didn’t you be with Emily and protect her instead?”

“I love Olivia. She's the only woman I've ever loved. As for Emily, I’ve failed her once, and I can't let her die because of me.”

Lucien let out a sigh. He sounded so guilty and helpless.

Lying in a pool of my own blood, I laughed until tears spilled from my eyes. He said he felt guilty, so he forced a fate that was never mine onto me. He said he loved me, yet he was the one who sent me to hell. He said he couldn't bear to fail Emily again, so was that why he chose to fail me instead?

Splash.

The stench of chemicals flooded my nose. The corrosive liquid burned my skin and every open wound. However, I didn't struggle. I floated in the dark, foul-smelling pool like a dead fish.

“Just two more minutes.” Lucien's voice trembled, as though he were trying to convince himself. “As soon as the storyline is complete, I'll pull Olivia out.”

A warm stream flowed from my body, and the water around me slowly turned red. With my consciousness fading, I could no longer tell whether the voices I heard belonged to the other world or the thugs surrounding me.

“Oh my God! Why is she bleeding like that? Wait… is she pregnant?”

“Lucien! Stop waiting! Your wife is miscarrying in that pool! Go save her!”

In my haze, I felt someone pull me into their arms.

Then, I heard Lucien's voice, thick with tears. “Olivia, it's okay now. You're safe. I'll heal your hand and your injuries. We can have another child. Once the mission is complete, I'll stay in this world forever. I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you by loving you.”

Love? Make it up to me?

I didn't want either of that anymore—not his love, his guilty conscience, or his promises.

A tear slipped silently from the corner of my eye. Then, I lost consciousness.

I spoke the truth calmly, and only then did I realize that the wounds I once carried no longer hurt. What remained of the love I had once believed was nothing but endless disappointment and pain.Lucien collapsed onto the ground, sitting there in defeat. He held his head in his hands as broken sobs escaped him.“It was my mistake. I’m sorry…”I let out a quiet sigh and walked up to him. Then, I crouched down in front of him, looking him straight in the eyes.I said softly, “Lucien, if you know you were wrong, turn yourself in. There are still people I care about in this world. Don’t let my death be in vain.”He lifted his head and stared at me obsessively. His eyes were filled with anguish and desperation.“Alright. I’ll do as you say.”He slowly stood up, opened the door, and walked toward the police waiting outside. Even then, his eyes never left me.Just before he was restrained, he turned back one last time, tears streaming down his face.He said, “Wait for me. Once I’m do

I looked at Lucien standing in front of me, my emotions a mess. The once imposing and handsome mafia boss had now become a disgraced, filthy fugitive.“Give it up, Lucien. Stop making the same mistake.”He stared at me, and little by little, his gaze turned unhinged.“No! I won’t give up, not unless they agree to bring you back! I can’t lose you!”He reached out, trying to pull me into an embrace, but his arms passed straight through my body.I let out a bitter smile. “I’m dead. I can’t come back anymore. Lucien, let them go. Besides, is all of this really their fault?”His expression twisted into despair and madness. “I know you hate me, Oliva! You hate me for not saving you! You hate me for not letting you get on that plane! I’ll kill Emily right now to avenge you!”He suddenly turned around, his eyes locking fiercely onto Emily, who was barely clinging to life. I quickly stepped forward to stop him. “Please don’t kill any more people! The Lucien I knew wouldn’t do something

At the same time, my consciousness drifted like a soul through endless darkness, and for the first time, I felt free. That was until a familiar voice suddenly rang beside my ear.“Olivia, wake up.”My eyes snapped open, but I wasn’t in a hospital or at an airport either. I was in a place that looked like a laboratory.A man stood in front of me, his expression filled with guilt.“Olivia, I used the experimental system to bring you back.”His voice sounded strangely familiar. He was the friend Lucien had once been communicating with from the other world. He noticed my wary expression and gave a small, awkward smile.“Olivia, your world was originally just one of our parallel-world transfer experiments. The experiment succeeded, but Lucien ended up falling in love with you.” He let out a sigh. “I can use the System to revive you, but on the condition that you go back and stop Lucien’s actions that are destabilizing the world. Otherwise, your world will collapse, and he will die.

It felt like a thousand needles were stabbing straight into Lucien’s heart at the same time. The pain was so intense that his vision went black, and he could barely breathe. Never before had the punishment for a flutter of the heart been so excruciating. When the pain finally eased slightly, he slowly lifted his head and re-established the connection to the outside world. His voice came out low and almost unhinged. “If I make Emily go through her original storyline and fate again, will Olivia come back?”His friend on the other end immediately panicked.“You’ve lost your mind! You absolutely cannot do that! Emily is the protagonist now. The original fate and storyline can no longer be reversed! Even if you force Emily back into her old life, Olivia won’t come back! Worse than that, the world will collapse! And you’ll die too!”At that moment, a message from the doctor arrived on Lucien’s device, followed by a video attachment.“Don Vaughn! We’ve figured out the cause of the Donn

“Olivia… is dead?” Lucien’s voice trembled. However, the only response he received was the cold, mechanical voice of the System.[Warning! Warning! The female protagonist of this novel has died. To prevent the collapse of the world structure, Emily Carter has been designated as the new female protagonist!][Repeat! Repeat! To prevent world collapse, Emily Carter has been designated as the new female protagonist!]Lucien shook his head numbly. “No, that’s impossible. Olivia is the protagonist. How could she die?”He then reconnected to his friend from the other world, but what appeared on the screen was my lifeless, bloodless face.“Yes. She’s dead.” His friend’s voice came through. “She may be the protagonist, but life has its limits. You repeatedly forced a fate and suffering onto her that didn’t belong to her, so that Emily was spared. It was you who killed her.”“No, that’s not true! Olivia is my true love. How could I possibly kill the person I love most?”Lucien clutched h

Less than five minutes later, every monitor connected to me began emitting a piercing beep. With that, Emily let out a laugh, pulled on her mask, and walked out of the hospital room.Doctors and nurses immediately rushed inside, and the room descended into chaos.“This is bad! The patient’s blood-clotting ability is deteriorating. At this rate, she'll die from infection! We have to get her back to Nueva York immediately. They have medication there that takes effect quickly!”"But it’s almost midnight! There aren’t any flights to Nueva York right now!"Everyone panicked. Then suddenly, someone shouted, “Call the Don! Didn’t Don Vaughn deploy his private jet a few hours ago? Have him take the Donna back to Merica first! Hurry! Call him!”I was so weak that I couldn’t even speak, but my eyes held a faint spark of hope. That was right. I didn’t want to die; I wanted to live. However, no matter how many times they tried, Lucien wouldn’t answer his phone. That was when the young nur
