Chapter 3

Author: Grogan
Less than five minutes later, every monitor connected to me began emitting a piercing beep. With that, Emily let out a laugh, pulled on her mask, and walked out of the hospital room.

Doctors and nurses immediately rushed inside, and the room descended into chaos.

“This is bad! The patient’s blood-clotting ability is deteriorating. At this rate, she'll die from infection! We have to get her back to Nueva York immediately. They have medication there that takes effect quickly!”

"But it’s almost midnight! There aren’t any flights to Nueva York right now!"

Everyone panicked.

Then suddenly, someone shouted, “Call the Don! Didn’t Don Vaughn deploy his private jet a few hours ago? Have him take the Donna back to Merica first! Hurry! Call him!”

I was so weak that I couldn’t even speak, but my eyes held a faint spark of hope.

That was right. I didn’t want to die; I wanted to live.

However, no matter how many times they tried, Lucien wouldn’t answer his phone. That was when the young nurse, who stayed by my side, suggested they stop calling and take me directly to the airport with the medical equipment attached.

Sweat covered their foreheads as they rushed me through the corridors, desperately racing against time in hopes of catching Lucien’s private jet. When we arrived at the airport, we found Lucien and Emily just moments away from departure. The nurse immediately ran forward and grabbed Lucien’s arm.

She shouted in a panic, “Don Vaughn! Hurry! You need to take the Donna back to Nueva York! Her condition is critical! If she doesn’t get back soon, she’ll die!”

“How could she be dying? Where are the specialists?”

“The doctor and the rest are all urgently coordinating with the treatment team in Nueva York! Don Vaughn, Olivia is really in danger! If you don’t believe me, I’ll put you through to the doctor right now!”

The nurse pulled out her phone, but the line to the doctor’s number was busy.

Meanwhile, Emily feigned a timid act and said softly, “Lucien, Olivia is probably jealous. That’s why she got her nurse to lie for her. The private jet only has room for two people. You should take her back to Nueva York. I'll be fine on my own.”

“No.” The originally hesitant Lucien immediately frowned. “I confirmed that Olivia was out of danger before I left. How could her condition suddenly worsen in only two hours? Don’t try to fool me. She was probably sedated, and you brought her here to find me, didn’t you?”

“No, Don Vaughn! The Donna came down with sepsis suddenly. She’s really in danger! You–”

“That’s enough.” Lucien interrupted the nurse, who was so distraught she had burst into tears. He frowned at me and said coldly, “Olivia, I know you're upset because I'm escorting Emily, but please try to understand. I'll come back and stay with you as soon as I've delivered her safely. Don’t be jealous.”

However, I wasn’t jealous. I was really dying.

I lay on the stretcher, unable to speak through the agony. I could feel my life slipping away little by little. My consciousness had also slowly faded, yet Lucien assumed it was simply the sedatives taking effect.

Gently, he pulled aside my oxygen mask and brushed a hand across the rotting wounds on my face.

He whispered, “Wait for me. It'll only be a few hours. When I get back, I'll take you to see the most famous sunset in the region.”

I didn’t want to see a sunset or wait for him; I just wanted to live. Unfortunately, it was too late. I could only watch helplessly as Lucien boarded the private jet with Emily.

Beside me, I heard the nurse break down in tears. “What do we do, Donna? Let’s go back and see the doctor! Maybe he can convince the Don! Or maybe we can find another private jet…”

Looking at this stranger who cared so much about me, I managed a weak smile. With all the strength I had left, I raised my hand and gave her a small wave, letting her know it was okay. Whether it was my life or Lucien Vaughn, it was all over.

As the nurse sobbed beside me, I drew my final breath and closed my eyes.

At that exact moment, aboard a private jet already hundreds of miles away, a shrill warning sound suddenly rang in Lucien’s ear.

[Warning! Warning! The novel’s female protagonist has died. World collapse is imminent.]

Lucien’s eyes widened in shock.

I spoke the truth calmly, and only then did I realize that the wounds I once carried no longer hurt. What remained of the love I had once believed was nothing but endless disappointment and pain.Lucien collapsed onto the ground, sitting there in defeat. He held his head in his hands as broken sobs escaped him.“It was my mistake. I’m sorry…”I let out a quiet sigh and walked up to him. Then, I crouched down in front of him, looking him straight in the eyes.I said softly, “Lucien, if you know you were wrong, turn yourself in. There are still people I care about in this world. Don’t let my death be in vain.”He lifted his head and stared at me obsessively. His eyes were filled with anguish and desperation.“Alright. I’ll do as you say.”He slowly stood up, opened the door, and walked toward the police waiting outside. Even then, his eyes never left me.Just before he was restrained, he turned back one last time, tears streaming down his face.He said, “Wait for me. Once I’m do

I looked at Lucien standing in front of me, my emotions a mess. The once imposing and handsome mafia boss had now become a disgraced, filthy fugitive.“Give it up, Lucien. Stop making the same mistake.”He stared at me, and little by little, his gaze turned unhinged.“No! I won’t give up, not unless they agree to bring you back! I can’t lose you!”He reached out, trying to pull me into an embrace, but his arms passed straight through my body.I let out a bitter smile. “I’m dead. I can’t come back anymore. Lucien, let them go. Besides, is all of this really their fault?”His expression twisted into despair and madness. “I know you hate me, Oliva! You hate me for not saving you! You hate me for not letting you get on that plane! I’ll kill Emily right now to avenge you!”He suddenly turned around, his eyes locking fiercely onto Emily, who was barely clinging to life. I quickly stepped forward to stop him. “Please don’t kill any more people! The Lucien I knew wouldn’t do something

At the same time, my consciousness drifted like a soul through endless darkness, and for the first time, I felt free. That was until a familiar voice suddenly rang beside my ear.“Olivia, wake up.”My eyes snapped open, but I wasn’t in a hospital or at an airport either. I was in a place that looked like a laboratory.A man stood in front of me, his expression filled with guilt.“Olivia, I used the experimental system to bring you back.”His voice sounded strangely familiar. He was the friend Lucien had once been communicating with from the other world. He noticed my wary expression and gave a small, awkward smile.“Olivia, your world was originally just one of our parallel-world transfer experiments. The experiment succeeded, but Lucien ended up falling in love with you.” He let out a sigh. “I can use the System to revive you, but on the condition that you go back and stop Lucien’s actions that are destabilizing the world. Otherwise, your world will collapse, and he will die.

It felt like a thousand needles were stabbing straight into Lucien’s heart at the same time. The pain was so intense that his vision went black, and he could barely breathe. Never before had the punishment for a flutter of the heart been so excruciating. When the pain finally eased slightly, he slowly lifted his head and re-established the connection to the outside world. His voice came out low and almost unhinged. “If I make Emily go through her original storyline and fate again, will Olivia come back?”His friend on the other end immediately panicked.“You’ve lost your mind! You absolutely cannot do that! Emily is the protagonist now. The original fate and storyline can no longer be reversed! Even if you force Emily back into her old life, Olivia won’t come back! Worse than that, the world will collapse! And you’ll die too!”At that moment, a message from the doctor arrived on Lucien’s device, followed by a video attachment.“Don Vaughn! We’ve figured out the cause of the Donn

“Olivia… is dead?” Lucien’s voice trembled. However, the only response he received was the cold, mechanical voice of the System.[Warning! Warning! The female protagonist of this novel has died. How could she die?”He then reconnected to his friend from the other world, but what appeared on the screen was my lifeless, bloodless face.“Yes. She’s dead.” His friend’s voice came through. “She may be the protagonist, but life has its limits. You repeatedly forced a fate and suffering onto her that didn’t belong to her, so that Emily was spared. It was you who killed her.”“No, that’s not true! Olivia is my true love. How could I possibly kill the person I love most?”Lucien clutched h
