Chapter 2

Author: Grogan
Lucien rushed me to the hospital. Chemicals had corroded the wounds and open sores on my body, and foul-smelling fluids kept oozing from beneath me. Even the medical specialists, people who had spent their careers witnessing the worst kinds of wounds, gasped when they saw my condition.

When I woke up again, the surgery was over. Lucien, whose face was covered in stubble and his eyes bloodshot, sat beside my bed.

His voice was hoarse as he said, “I’m sorry, Olivia. I was too late. I swear, from now on, I'll protect you no matter what.”

Tears fell from his eyes onto my face. Startled, Lucien quickly reached out, trying to wipe them away, but I pushed his hand aside.

“You said you're from another world, didn’t you? And that you always know what's happening to me and would come save me the moment I'm in danger?”

Lucien froze, looking guilty.

“I-I got tied up with family business. That's why I didn't realize what was happening in time. I'm sorry, Olivia. I will never let that happen to you again. The best specialists I hired will reattach your severed finger. And as for the baby, after you've recovered, we can try again…”

He kissed my palm with remorse, his eyes reddening once more.

Seeing him so heartbroken in the past would have shattered me. I would've ignored my own pain, gotten out of bed, wrapped my arms around him, and told him everything was okay. Yet now, I simply pulled my hand away.

Lucien immediately noticed my coldness, and panic flashed across his face.

“Did I hurt you, sweetheart–”

Just then, his phone rang. I caught the guilty look that flickered across his face before he quickly declined the call.

“It's family business. Don't worry about it. I'll stay right here with you until you've fully recovered.”

Family business? I could clearly see the caller ID stating that it was Emily Carter.

Then, the phone rang again. This time, I could see Lucien growing more anxious by the second. His fingers fidgeted restlessly while his gaze shifted back and forth between me and his phone, as if he were testing my reaction.

“Go,” I said. “I don't need you here.”

A flash of relief crossed his face before he quickly frowned.

“The doctors said the skin on your whole body is infected, so tonight is going to be rough. Usually, even a small injury would have you hiding in my arms and complaining about the pain. So why are you–”

“Work is important, isn't it?”

“Olivia, you're so understanding.”

Lucien smiled, looking visibly relieved.

“When I'm done tonight, I'll come straight back. I'll stay with you and take care of you until you're fully recovered.”

Before he left, he gazed at me affectionately and made another promise. However, I turned my head away, not wanting to say another word to him.

Lucien always claimed I was the only woman he loved, but now, I had seen where I stood in his priorities. To him, answering Emily's call was more important than staying with his injured wife.

That night, he never came back. My wounds tormented me as I lay there, pale and suffering from the agony. Sweat soaked through the sheets, while my sobs and cries echoed through the hospital room, where I was alone.

Then, I heard another conversation between Lucien and his friend from the other world.

“For her safety, I've decided to send Emily back to Nueva York by helicopter, but she’s crying and saying she's scared. She refuses to leave unless I go with her.”

His friend's voice was filled with disbelief. “Have you lost your mind? Olivia was just transferred out of the ICU, and you're leaving her alone in Itali?”

“I'll be back by morning! I’ve interfered with the story’s mission by rescuing Olivia earlier than I was supposed to. If the mission fails, Emily will be in danger. I have to get her out of here! Olivia has plenty of doctors watching over her. She'll be fine. I'll have them give her a sedative. It'll ease her pain and make her think I stayed by her side all night.”

At that point, the pain in my heart was worse than any of my physical injuries. Even after learning the truth about how little I mattered, his words made me sad. However, I was too physically weak to cry anymore.

Just then, a nurse wearing a mask approached my bedside carrying a syringe. The moment she pulled down her mask, my eyes widened in shock. It was Emily who had disguised herself as a nurse.

“They told me your entire body was infected, and honestly, I didn't believe them. Wow. Lucien really did abandon you for me.”

Looking over at the yellow and green fluids staining my bandages, she covered her nose in disgust and then raised an eyebrow smugly.

“What a pathetic sight. Do you really think you'll recover from this? Maybe I should help put you out of your misery.”

My eyes locked onto the syringe in her hand, and a powerful sense of dread surged through me. However, my body was too weak, and I was nothing more than prey waiting for slaughter.

“This isn't a sedative. It's a toxin that will trigger sepsis. In a few hours, Lucien and I will arrive in Nueva York, and he'll receive the news that the infection killed you,” Emily said with a sinister smile.

Then, without the slightest hesitation, she plunged the needle into my vein.

I spoke the truth calmly, and only then did I realize that the wounds I once carried no longer hurt. What remained of the love I had once believed was nothing but endless disappointment and pain.Lucien collapsed onto the ground, sitting there in defeat. He held his head in his hands as broken sobs escaped him.“It was my mistake. I’m sorry…”I let out a quiet sigh and walked up to him. Then, I crouched down in front of him, looking him straight in the eyes.I said softly, “Lucien, if you know you were wrong, turn yourself in. There are still people I care about in this world. Don’t let my death be in vain.”He lifted his head and stared at me obsessively. His eyes were filled with anguish and desperation.“Alright. I’ll do as you say.”He slowly stood up, opened the door, and walked toward the police waiting outside. Even then, his eyes never left me.Just before he was restrained, he turned back one last time, tears streaming down his face.He said, “Wait for me. Once I’m do

I looked at Lucien standing in front of me, my emotions a mess. The once imposing and handsome mafia boss had now become a disgraced, filthy fugitive.“Give it up, Lucien. Stop making the same mistake.”He stared at me, and little by little, his gaze turned unhinged.“No! I won’t give up, not unless they agree to bring you back! I can’t lose you!”He reached out, trying to pull me into an embrace, but his arms passed straight through my body.I let out a bitter smile. “I’m dead. I can’t come back anymore. Lucien, let them go. Besides, is all of this really their fault?”His expression twisted into despair and madness. “I know you hate me, Oliva! You hate me for not saving you! You hate me for not letting you get on that plane! I’ll kill Emily right now to avenge you!”He suddenly turned around, his eyes locking fiercely onto Emily, who was barely clinging to life. I quickly stepped forward to stop him. “Please don’t kill any more people! The Lucien I knew wouldn’t do something

At the same time, my consciousness drifted like a soul through endless darkness, and for the first time, I felt free. That was until a familiar voice suddenly rang beside my ear.“Olivia, wake up.”My eyes snapped open, but I wasn’t in a hospital or at an airport either. I was in a place that looked like a laboratory.A man stood in front of me, his expression filled with guilt.“Olivia, I used the experimental system to bring you back.”His voice sounded strangely familiar. He was the friend Lucien had once been communicating with from the other world. He noticed my wary expression and gave a small, awkward smile.“Olivia, your world was originally just one of our parallel-world transfer experiments. The experiment succeeded, but Lucien ended up falling in love with you.” He let out a sigh. “I can use the System to revive you, but on the condition that you go back and stop Lucien’s actions that are destabilizing the world. Otherwise, your world will collapse, and he will die.

It felt like a thousand needles were stabbing straight into Lucien’s heart at the same time. The pain was so intense that his vision went black, and he could barely breathe. Never before had the punishment for a flutter of the heart been so excruciating. When the pain finally eased slightly, he slowly lifted his head and re-established the connection to the outside world. His voice came out low and almost unhinged. “If I make Emily go through her original storyline and fate again, will Olivia come back?”His friend on the other end immediately panicked.“You’ve lost your mind! You absolutely cannot do that! Emily is the protagonist now. The original fate and storyline can no longer be reversed! Even if you force Emily back into her old life, Olivia won’t come back! Worse than that, the world will collapse! And you’ll die too!”At that moment, a message from the doctor arrived on Lucien’s device, followed by a video attachment.“Don Vaughn! We’ve figured out the cause of the Donn

“Olivia… is dead?” Lucien’s voice trembled. However, the only response he received was the cold, mechanical voice of the System.[Warning! Warning! The female protagonist of this novel has died. To prevent world collapse, Emily Carter has been designated as the new female protagonist!]Lucien shook his head numbly. “No, that’s impossible. Olivia is the protagonist. How could she die?”He then reconnected to his friend from the other world, but what appeared on the screen was my lifeless, bloodless face.“Yes. She’s dead.” His friend’s voice came through. “She may be the protagonist, but life has its limits. You repeatedly forced a fate and suffering onto her that didn’t belong to her, so that Emily was spared. It was you who killed her.”“No, that’s not true! Olivia is my true love. How could I possibly kill the person I love most?”Lucien clutched h

Less than five minutes later, every monitor connected to me began emitting a piercing beep. With that, Emily let out a laugh, pulled on her mask, and walked out of the hospital room.Doctors and nurses immediately rushed inside, and the room descended into chaos.“This is bad! The patient’s blood-clotting ability is deteriorating. At this rate, she'll die from infection! We have to get her back to Nueva York immediately. They have medication there that takes effect quickly!”"But it’s almost midnight! There aren’t any flights to Nueva York right now!"Everyone panicked. Then suddenly, someone shouted, “Call the Don! Didn’t Don Vaughn deploy his private jet a few hours ago? Have him take the Donna back to Merica first! Hurry! Call him!”I was so weak that I couldn’t even speak, but my eyes held a faint spark of hope. That was right. I didn’t want to die; I wanted to live.
