Opportunity.

As usual, rushing to first period was hectic. The packed halls, pushing and forcing their way to whichever direction they were headed. Miss Joy had quickly lost tract of the fleeing girl, so did the three pairs of eyes caught in a wind of uncertainty.

Although the bell had interrupted the one-sided dispute, Britney was still fuming with anger as if a certain green-eyed monster had awakened, eating at her flesh…. Jealousy was rotten to the core. From her prospective the little miss nobody wanted to create a scene by directly bumping into the school’s most popular figures with the goal of gaining some sort of recognition or fame, perhaps even with the motive of challenging her status as Jeremy’s girlfriend.

On the contrary, she was simply threatened by her own imagination. As with any other fruitless fights, the matter was quickly forgotten, in fact many could hardly remember what the clumsy nerd looked like. With the exception of two fellas that seemed to have the incident engraved in their brains. One recalled every detail out of pure enjoyment from the hyped reaction of the annoying barbie, while the other couldn’t find a reasonable explanation to convince himself as to why the cheeky girl’s appearance kept popping up in his mind like an antique projector flashing one image after another, all of the same delicate flushed cheeks, cute nose and tempting lips.

Britney wanted to question Jeremy the way an obsessed insecure girlfriend would, but thinking of maintaining her ‘I’m better than the rest act’ she swallowed her frustration, following closely behind as they entered science class, which was basically the biology study department.

“Are you really planning on joining me this semester in here? This isn’t even your field.” Jeremy scuffed in disdain obviously aware of his friend’s intentions of taking an unrelated class.

     “I’m expanding my horizon…”

“Mr. Barkley! Professor Welton’s classroom is down the hall to your right, get out of here!” The headteacher scolded in annoyance.

“But Miss Archer I can really benefit from the extra subject...”

“young man this is your final warning, leave or else I will use you to lead our live demonstration for the topic of frog dissection today.”

Even if he knew it was just a shallow threat, Marcus instantly lost interest since his expectation of exploiting the topic of reproduction had been shattered. With a grumpy expression he could only pout childishly while taking his leave. Of course, he would not accept defeat alone, so Britney too who had no business being there, as her major lied mainly in economics and finance, was dragged down with him.

“Miss Archer, Britney is taking the same course as I am, it’s really unfair to allow her to stay behind just to accompany her boyfriend, it’s unprofessional Mam.” Surely he did not want to be in the same hall as her, but thinking of leaving the pestering barbie to disturb his pal, Marcus figured it was best to create some distance between the two all the while annoying the crap out of her without restrain or the occasional glare from the helpless Jeremy.

“He’s right Miss Hudson, we can’t encourage this type of behavior. You are no longer juniors ranting about freely, as seniors please try and set a good example for the newcomers.” Before the flouncing cheerleader had an opportunity to take her seat, she was cast out.

“You’ll pay for this, you… you.”

“Chill Barbie, we’ll see each other for at least an hour, you’ll have enough time to make up with some lame comeback.”

“Auggh!” stomping her feet in frustration under the watchful eyes of others, Britney could only accept defeat and did as instructed.

Jeremy casually took his seat without paying much attention as if he was just another silent observer. Surprisingly, no one ever judged him for being indifferent towards his girlfriend, they simply thought he was mysterious. On the outside he seemed to be calm and collective but within… the tidal waves of emotions were buried so deep that Jeremy himself had probably forgotten what his true appearance was like.

“Alight class, now before we begin, I have an important announcement to make…”

“Finally! You’re retiring!” a charming young man with a dazzling smiled joked loudly causing an outburst of laughter to echo through the room.

“Unfortunately, no Mr. Lancer I’ll still have the displeasure of seeing you another two years, with the way your grades are moving graduating is nothing but a fond dream and wishful thinking.”

“Come on, don’t jinx it you never know maybe I can get some hot nerd to help me get my score up.”

“Keeping talking nonsense and I’ll have you fail your first exam before you even have the chance to start.”

“Miss Archer, don’t keep us guessing, what important announcement do you have for us?” As expected, the comedian quickly dropped his show but continued to act; prompting himself up in a dignified well-behaved manner asking with great enthusiasm.

“Good now that I have everyone’s attention, I would like to inform you that our school was selected this year to take part in an early internship program at Baysides most prestigious medical facility, ‘Central Care hospital’, to offer interested students first-hand experience and to further boost their motivation to keep persevering in their studies.”

Hearing this Jeremy instantly looked ahead with great anticipation. This could be the opportunity of a lifetime for him, maybe he could finally prove to his father that this was really where he belonged, before actually completing his last semester and forced into the family business.

The teacher spoke again seeing the topic had surely sparked a lot of curiosity, “To qualify for selection each student is required to maintain a point four GPA on upcoming exams for the next two months. Additionally, he or she must take part in at least one after-school activity. It also requires team work participation, meaning you will all be placed in groups of two. If one fails then no one from your group will be considered for the internship.”

        Loud bickering quickly erupted…

    “That’s outrageous!”

“Yeah! That’s not fair for the rest of us that are actually serious about our future.”

“What if we work our butts off and the other person only intends on fooling around? Are we expected to carry around dead weight? Slackers?” Someone said looking at Jake Lancer with clear indication.

“Yes, how are you going to determine who gets paired with who?”

“Alright, alright! Settle down and let me explain.” Miss Archer tried calming the excited teens then once again continued. “we’ll have a name raffle draw, all of your titles have been placed in this box, the first duo to be called upon will be apart of the same group, followed by the second set of twos, the third, forth and so on until we have no one remaining, if there’s an extra student at the end that person will be chosen by a volunteer team.” Saying this she lifted the small paper craft box onto her table and slowly began calling and recording the names of the partnered teens chosen.
