Abigail's POV
"Good morning ladies and gentlemen, thank you for showing interest in the job, every one of you will receive a tag, please don't lose it and keep the number registered in your head because we'll be calling number after number, good luck!" A lady dressed in office wear said. "Number one, you are up." The interview began. My eyes were glued to the door, I was waiting to see the first person's reaction when she came out of that office. It didn't take long though, she looked really angry, she slammed the door and threw her tag on the lady from earlier. 'Now I'm really scared, maybe I should text Ruth and tell her that I can't push through with the interview.' a message from Derick popped on my screen, it read; "You can do this little Abby, I'm rooting for you, and don't let other's reactions determine your fate. Trust me because I've interviewed people before." The message came with two thumbs up, it made me smile. "I can do this," I muttered to myself. "Number 5!" The lady announced, "huh? When did they reach number five? I'm after number five. For how long have I been lost in my thoughts?" "Number 6!" My number was announced, I stood up and dusted my clothes, while walking I secretly prayed that I don't humiliate myself. 'what if I pumped into the door?' and just like I thought, I tripped over my foot and fell. Everyone laughed, 'This is humiliating.' I stood up, raised my head high, and walked in. "Good morning sir." I bowed before the man who was conducting the interview. "Morning, please have a seat." He instructed, he sounded so polite, this is going fine, I haven't humiliated myself in front of him, this is a good sign. "You CV." He requested, I quickly handed my CV to him. "I see you just graduated from college, your grades are good, your school background is excellent but you don't have any experience. Why should we employ you?" "I know I have no experience but I know what my job is all about, if you look at my resumé you'd see that I went through a three-month internship program, and the report from my supervisor is good." I tried as much as possible to look bold, I hope he doesn't pick the fear in my voice. "Why should we pay you for teaching you how to do your job? I know you said you went through a three-month internship program but that isn't enough experience." He looked calm while asking me these questions but his calmness was intimidating to me. "I can go through probation and if you don't like my work then don't hire me." He leaned back into his seat, stared at me for a while, and then smiled. "Unlike everyone else who has walked into this office and left, you are the only one who has given me a satisfying answer to my questions. Thank you for coming, expect a call from us." "Thank you." I stood up with a broad smile and shook hands with him. I wanted to call Ruth but I decided against it, she's surely working, and I shouldn't disturb her, I called Max instead to pick me up. I was worried for nothing, I felt so happy, I passed by a cake shop and bought a strawberry cake for Derick and me to celebrate. "You look happy, I take that the job interview went well," Derick said when I entered the house. "You can say that again, the person who was conducting the interview was impressed with my response to his question, he told me to expect a call from them." I narrated everything to him and he paid attention, Derick is a pretty good listener. "See, I told you there's nothing to worry about." He roughed my hair like I was some kid. I pushed his hand away. "Don't mess with my hair, if you do that again you won't get a bite from my cake." I showed him the box containing the cake, he raised his hands. "Yeah, just like I thought." I ran to the kitchen to get a knife, two plates, and two forks. "Uhm, mom called, she Uhm said she tried to reach you today but you didn't pick up I told her that you went for a job interview," Derick said, I am happy he that he calling my mom his mom, I think it's high time I start calling his dad my dad too. I pulled out my phone and indeed I had five missed calls from Mom, ohh she is going to freak out that I went for a job interview without telling her, I'm in deep trouble. I called her, "Hi Mom, good afternoon." I smiled but she didn't smile back. "How are you doing?" She asked "I'm fine, actually I'm doing great. How are you and dad." I cleared my throat, it wasn't so hard to call him 'dad' She finally smiled. "We are doing good. Derick said you went for a job interview?" It was more of a question than a statement. "Yes I did, look I'm sorry that I didn't inform you about it but I wanted to surprise you and I didn't want you to feel sorry for me if I didn't get the job." I chewed my bottom lip. "Honey, I'd appreciate it if you tell me everything, I want to be informed..... Let bygones be bygones, so how was the interview?" She asked. "The interview was a great mom." "So my baby now has a job, I'm so proud of you baby. You are already working at age 21, I'm so happy for you sweetheart." Her words made me smile from ear to ear "Thank you, mom. Derick encouraged me, I wanted to back out but his encouraging words made me go through with it." The smile on Mom's face grew wider. "Are you two okay now?" She asked smiling. "Yes Mom, we've decided to put our differences aside for you and Dad. He isn't a bad big brother, he's annoying but I can live with that." I glanced at Derick, he was smiling at me. "I have to go, your dad went to get us something to eat and he is not back yet, let me go check up on him. Bye sweetheart, kisses." "Bye Mommy, greet Dad for me. I love you." I kissed my screen, the call came to an end. "Let's eat?" The strawberry cake is delicious, "Mmmmm," I moaned with my eyes shut. When I opened my eyes, I caught Derick staring, I couldn't read the emotions on his face."Abby," I heard him calling my name but I ignored him, I wanted to be alone. I don't need my big brother, all I need is me and this cold floor."Abigail if you don't open this door right now I'm going to break it." He threatened, with a sigh I stood up and opened the door for him."What do you want Derick, leave me alone." My eyes stinked."I don't want you to be alone." He pushed himself inside my room and shut the door, took hold of my hand, and took me to my bed. "Sit down." He ordered I did as I was told."I know what you are going to say, 'told you so.." I rolled my eyes."No, I'm not going to say that although I want to. But I'm not because it's also my fault for not telling you what I saw.""What do you mean Derick? What did you see?" I looked him dead in the eye waiting for him to explain himself."The other day I saw him in a restaurant with a different lady, and no it wasn't Ruth. I wanted to tell you about it but I didn't want to be the bearer of bad news and I didn't want
Abby's POVDerick has been acting strange lately, I feel like he has something to tell me but he is holding back, sometimes I catch him staring at me with a look that makes my heart drop."Here is your cake." The cashier said, I'm at a cake store, today's Alex's birthday, I'm so excited, this is the first time I'll be celebrating his birthday with him. And guess what, it's Saturday so I don't have work, I plan on spending the weekend in his place. We've been dating for a month now and we've never spent quality time together, we've never been intimate with him, it's my fault because I've always been busy. I want to make it up to him."I collected my cake and paid for it," humming to a tune that has been stuck in my head for a long time.Max opened the car door for me, I thanked him and went in. He'll be taking me to Alex's, Derick said I shouldn't go there by Public transportation. On her way to his home, I thought about the things we'd do together, I couldn't help but blush. When we a
This movie is crazy, just thirty minutes into it and I've cried my eyes out, I want to stop watching but I can't. My eyes are glued to the screen, I just can't stop watching. The movie finally came to an end, my eyes were completely red and swollen. "Why did you decide to watch such a movie?" Ruth was in the same condition as me. "Because I heard people talking about it, I wanted to see if it was a nice movie. Now I know." She stood up and went to the kitchen, she came back a few seconds later with two glasses of water. We watched a lot of movies, and we laughed and cried, it's moments like this that I cherish the most when I'm with her. "It's getting late, I think I should start heading home." "Awww but I still want you here," she pouted, I giggled, she looked cute. "I don't want to leave either but I have to." I pulled out my phone and texted Derick. "I still have like thirty minutes or more before my ride gets here, let's make the most of it." We used that thirty minutes to
I tensed up when I heard what she said, 'Am I being obvious?' I asked myself but got no reply. "But don't worry, we both know that you can never have feelings for me, after all, we are siblings." She disengaged from the hug and kissed my cheeks. She pulled away and pointed at the coffee mug, "Don't drink too much coffee." She said and left. I breathed out the air I didn't know I was holding, I sighed and returned to my seat, I picked up the coffee mug and had a taste of what she made. The coffee she brewed was strong and dark, I liked it. Weeks passed by quickly, Abby was busy with her job, and I saw less for her at home, I know it's supposed to make me happy but it doesn't, my feelings for her are still the same. The little time I get to see her, she's always on her phone talking to that douchbag. Abby's POV I wasn't wrong when I gave Alex a second chance, he has been the best boyfriend ever, and he has always been so supportive of me. My job is tiring and demanding, I barely
"Take them to my office," I instructed the driver. "Look, Derick is back." I heard Abby's voice from the living room, I could hear my parents' voices. "Good evening Mom and Dad," my stepmom opened her hands for a hug, I couldn't resist it, I needed it. I hugged her, I went as far as laying down next to her and putting my head on her thigh while she ran her hands through my hair. "How was work today?" She asked. "Tiring." I gave a short reply, my eyes landed on Abby, she was staring at me with a smile on her face. "You brought work back home." Abby pointed out the obvious. "Yeah, thanks I didn't realize," I muttered trying to sound sarcastic she stuck out her tongue, and it made me laugh. "I have loads of paperwork, I decided to bring some back home to kill time with..... Dad, Mom said you fell ill, how are you feeling now?" I decided to change the topic. "I'm feeling much better," Dad replied. I hummed. "Dinner is served," I heard the voice of the maid I forgot we had, mom ha
