This Isn't Done

Abegail’s Point of View.

I didn’t sleep the whole night, I just kept on staring on the ceiling, thinking for a way how to vanish from this point of my life.

It’s so funny to think how my emotions were all mixed up. I’d probably die too soon because of these heavy things happening.

While gazing up on the white ceiling, my alarm from the phone buzzed. I looked at it and saw a reminder flashing on the screen. “Call Dad” was the name of the reminder. I languidly picked it up to dial his phone number and waited for him to answer.

“Hello?” A voice of a lady answered. “Is this the daughter of Mr. Taylor?”

Perhaps, it’s one of the caregivers. “Yes,” I answered meekly. “I am his daughter, can I speak to him, please?”

“Just a minute, Miss Taylor.”

Miss Taylor. The mere name people used to call me. Now, I was called by the name Mrs. Jones, but was I really married? Truth be told, the first weeks of the marriage are fine, but when I started staying in his mansion, I felt like I’ve been played .

I didn’t feel that happy and light feeling of wives must have. I felt discarded, I felt so used. It shouldn’t go like this.

“Dear?” A low and weak voice of a man reached my ear.

All of a sudden, I felt like my blood was revived, and the sudden swirl of excitement sent a smile on my face. “Hello, Dad.”

“How are you, dear? I hope you are doing fine,” he said with his loving and calm voice. “I’ve been waiting for you to call me, I can’t see too well already that’s why I can’t call you these days, but I also forgot your number, dear. I am really sorry.”

I started sobbing but I tried my very best not to make my father hear it. “It’s fine..” I muttered and sniffed. “I just got busy.”

“Are you in Jones’ mansion?” he asked. “Are they treating you well, my love? The way I treated you.”

The question squeezed my heart. I bit my lower lip hard as I closed my eyes tight. Damn, he should’ve not asked me that. That question hurt so much.

“Yes..” I answered in a very low voice. “They were treating me well.” But inside my head, I crossed my fingers for disapproval. I am really bad at lying.

“Good to know, dear,” Dad answered. “Where are you now? Can you come and visit me, Abegail?”

I blinked my tears away and took a deep breath. “Yes! I will visit you as soon as I can, Dad. I’ve missed you!”

“I’ve missed my jolly daughter, as well,” Dad said and chuckled shortly. “Come over and see me..”

“Dad?” I stammered and felt how my jaw trembled.

“Yes, my dearest?”

“I..” While stuttering, I pinched my arm. I need to get rid of this anxiety, damn it!

“Say it, dear..”

“I am not feeling well,” I almost mumbled and went back to bed. “But I’ll be fine soon, I’ll drop you a visit. I promise you that.”

My dad didn’t answer, the other line went dead air for a while that made me frown my forehead. What happened?

“Miss Taylor?” the caregiver called out. “I am sorry, your father fell asleep. He just took his meds a while ago, and now, he slept too fast.”

“Oh,” I uttered. “I understand. Thank you, please tell him not to worry about me, I’ll visit him. That’s a promise.”

“Sure, I’ll tell him.” Then I ended the call without answering.

“Abegail’s not here, go away, you asshole!” Macey shrieked outside of her house. I pulled myself up in a sitting position and closed my eyes as the sunlight flashed through my vision.

To whom is she screaming?

I ran out from the house and witnessed her with a man on the gate. It was Selvin, my husband. His gaze went up from my best friend to me. Our eyes met, and when I saw the look on his face, my heart sank.

I took another deep breath. Damn, good thing it’s not Sarah, but my husband. I suddenly remembered Sarah’s text last night. What was that all about?

“Honey,” Selvin called out and went past my friend. “Please come back home—”

“Asshole, I didn’t tell you to come inside my property!” Macey shrieked in fury and pulled Selvin’s arm with all of her force. “Get outta here!”

“Please, let me just talk to my wife,” Selvin said.

“I told you, you can’t talk to her!” Macey said and pulled his arm again, but this time, Selvin pushed Macey away.

Macey lost her balance and fell on the ground. “Ouch!” she snapped and reached out for her ankle. “Damn it!”

“Macey!” I called out and ran to her direction. “What happened?”

Selvin moved closer to me. “Honey, please. Can we talk privately?” Selvin asked in a pleading way. “Ditch your brainless friend out, she can’t decide whether you should talk to me or not.”

I glared at Selvin. “What?” I asked and stood in front of him. “Brainless friend? Who do you think you are to say that?” I asked as the anger started growing inside me.

He frowned. “What…”

“Who are you to call my friend like that!” I exclaimed. “If she’s brainless, then what do you call yourself? Damnation to hell, I’d hate you for saying that! After you pushed her, you still have the gut to talk like that!”

“Wha—why, what happened?” He looked so confused. “I just want to talk to you privately, honey.”

“You don’t remember what happened last night, do you?” I asked as I drew my brows into a deep vee. “You did something, and now I realized how you disrespect me! You disrespect my friend on calling her like that, where in fact, she’s the one who saved me last night!”

“What, what are you talking about?” he asked, confusion stayed on his face.

“You were drunk, and you didn’t even notice my swollen cheeks!” I answered. “Your family abused me at home, in addition that you f*cked me last night although I told you to stop!”

“Babe, I was drunk—”

“Well, damn you to hell anyway!” I screamed at his face and pushed him away. I don’t care now, what I realize is the only thing I wanted. I am so sure that I wanted to be free now.

After years of being married with him, the early months were the only timeline that made me so happy and alive. Now, everything was choking me to my own death.

I need to break the tie, or else the cycle will happen again. I looked at Selvin straight to his eyes, and with determination on my voice, I told him.

“We are done. I need to file a divorce.”
