RUSLAN'S POV

The Irish clan was still quiet despite the fact that words had gone round that I had tightened the security of my perimeter.

In our world, silence wasn’t peace, it was a prelude to war. And when men like the Irish clan stopped barking, it meant they were getting ready for war.

The thought of it made my skin crawl. They might have gone to re-enforce their attacks which were going to be fatal.

Still, I kept my composure.

To others, nothing was wrong since I went about my duties, my dealings, my responsibilities like I always did without a hitch but underneath, I was on edge.

I was watching, listening and waiting for the Irish clan to attack. I wasn't going to relax and watch them swoon in on me when I least expect it.

Swirling around in the swivel chair in my home office, my eyes were shut as I hummed a familiar rhyme.

I was doing this to pass time.

There was a meeting at the Devil's Priesthood which was scheduled for noon. I had an hour left so I decided to spend it m

  • Craving Him, My Step-Brother    Chapter 93

Ivana’s POVSitting in my favourite position at the studio, a brush was dangling in my hand as I stared at the blank canvas in front of me. The smell of turpentine and fresh acrylics soothed my nerves and immediately the inspiration hit, I dragged the brush across the canvas, layering strokes of pale gold over the subtle pink tones I had spent the last hour blending.I was painting a girl silhouette who had her head turned toward a lake that shone under the moonlight. It was the theme of the week and so I wanted to put in my best.Keeping me company in the large studio which was deserted as everyone has gone for lunch was the gentle instrumental music playing from my phone. The instant there was a shift in the air, I noticed and immediately, I turned off my music, turning to face the intruder who was no other than Benny. Crossing his hands on his chest, he muttered, “You don't like the food around here?"“I had a late breakfast." I said through my teeth, resisting the urge of scoo

  • Craving Him, My Step-Brother    Chapter 92

Ivana's POVAfter a long day at work, Fabrizio had asked everyone to stay back and together, we all headed to the restaurant which was a stone throw from the gallery. The almost dead restaurant lit up when we arrived. Laughter was spiralling from each corner, the clinking of glasses too and then the aroma of roasted chicken and wine. While others chatted, I dug into my meal, relishing the tasty chicken whose aroma had been messing with my brain since noon. The long mahogany table in the middle of the restaurant was surrounded by the top artists of Montalto Gallery and I considered sitting among them a rare privilege. Eating with them meant I had been included in their group and I was doing well with my craft and I wasn't going to take this opportunity for granted.Sipping from my glass of red wine, I craned my ear to listen to every bit of their conversation as their voices were rising and falling. It had been a week since I took up the job and I must say it was the best decision

  • Craving Him, My Step-Brother    Chapter 91

Ruslan’s POVFor more than ten minutes since I stepped into my room, I was still frozen in place, my eyes on one woman whom I thought I was never going to see again.Atina Dumello, my ex-girlfriend who suddenly disappeared without a trace, not like I really cared but now, she is back. I hadn't meant her randomly, instead, I had met her in my house and room of all places and at the moment, she was lounging on my bed like she still had a claim to it. It has been a year since I last saw her but she still looked exactly the same, a little more refined but recognizing her was instant. Her dark curls which she always left resting on her back were now styled with effortless grace, and her lips painted in the shade I used to love. The scent of her expensive perfume clung to the air, sickly sweet and far too familiar. I hadn’t smelled it in a year, but yet it brought back memories that twisted in my chest like barbed wire.“What the hell are you doing here?” I asked when I finally found my

090Ruslan’s POVSeated behind the counter, I was staring at the cellar of drinks just in front of me. The glass I held trembled between my fingers as I swirled the remaining whiskey in slow, tight circles. The bar was dimly lit, hazy with smoke from cigarettes, and thick with the low murmur of conversations and clinking glasses. A lot of things were happening but I was lost in all of it. I wasn’t listening to what was going on around me.Not to the music, not to the men talking about the Irish syndicate making waves in Brooklyn and not even Nico who sat across from me feeding me with the latest updates from the underworld. All I could hear was the sound of her name in my head.Ivana.I tried to forget her but it was not easy. She was an integral part of my life. The therapy wasn't even helping, instead things got worse and was slowly spiralling out of control. My obsession with Ivana was driving me crazy and I was barely holding it in.“Boss,” Nico called, leaning in. “The Italia

Ivana’s POVStaring at the screen of my phone while it vibrated, I was contemplating on ending the call but on the other hand, I felt Trenton was going to be disappointed if he found out I rejected the offer. After three rings, the lines connected. “Hello, Fabrizio Orlov, how may I be of help?" He asked, forcing me to send my teeth into my lower lips. I was itching to ask him if he was related to Ruslan. If he did, there was no way I was going to accept this job.Disappointed that I couldn't do a background check on him, I wanted to hang up but then his voice came through again. “Ivana Alex." I introduced myself. Taking a deep drink of air, I pushed my hand into my hair and with a voice barely above a whisper, I said, “I thought about your request, I will accept it.” Shutting my eyes tightly, I continued to dig my teeth into my lips, my heart ramming against my chest.I was terrified. I felt like I had messed up things with my unprofessional response. "I’m glad you did.” He repl

088Ivana’s POV At the end of the meeting with Fabrizio, I could barely breathe. I was as if my air supply had been cut off and I was just trying to survive. His last name and accent had been stamped to my head and it was hard to forget it no matter how much I tried to.Gulping, I rubbed my forehead which was aching slightly as I stumbled towards the stairs. “Hey, miss Ivana." The Italian accent made me halt and slowly, I turned around to face him, my brows twisted. Halting beside me, he muttered, “I'm sorry I didn't get to treat you to a cup of coffee earlier."“Oh, you really don't have to worry about something like that. I’m perfectly fine." I laughed, amused with his words."Okay, if you say so.” He muttered, rubbing his neck. "Next time, I will treat you to something better.” Before I could react, he added, "I hope there will be next time.” Unsure of what to say, I flashed him a forced smile. "Thank you for your hospitality, I will relay my decision to you.” After a curt b

Ivana's POVI paused, my head processing different thoughts at the same time. Slowly, I turned around to see a tall woman in her early forties. She had sharp cheekbones, a silk scarf knotted neatly around her neck, and a clipboard in her hand. Her eyes were hooded but looked kind."Y-yes," I stammered, pressing my lips into a thin line.I stood there, stunned with the way she had called my name like we have known ourselves before now but this was our first time meeting. How did she know who I was? The woman in front of me was poised, elegant, and had this calm aura that hovered around her that made me vulnerable and nervous."You’re Ivana Alex, right?" She repeated, her voice kind but firm.I nodded slowly, confusion all over my face. Flashing a smile, she said, "Come with me, my boss would like to meet you."I blinked rapidly before glancing around the crowded room. Artists were everywhere, some were painting, others sculpting and sketching. While on the other hand, I was alrea

Ivana's POV“Ivana, you’re going to be late." Mother said, hitting her knuckles against my door which was slightly open. “I will be done in a few minutes." I replied, shoving my phone into my bag. It was barely seven in the morning but I was already struggling with the zipper of my jeans. In the living room, the twins were making a hell of noise and I could hear Mom calling out from the kitchen. She was juggling between making breakfast and getting the kids ready for their daycare. The perfect definition for this morning is chaos. "Ivana! You’re going to be late!" Mother yelled out in frustration. "I’m coming.” I yelled back, giving up on the jeans and pulling on a pair of gray slacks instead. My heart was thumping louder than usual as my nerves twisted into knots. I didn't know what to think as I wasn't expecting this.Today was the so-called "meeting" Trenton had set up for me and I didn't want to disappoint him a bit.Considering me when there were other artists was a big fa

Ivana's POVThree years later…“Kian." I yelled, startling my three year old son who was chewing the edge of my stack of canvas. “Mom." He muttered, moving backwards until he disappeared into the corner. Rubbing my head which was aching slightly, I picked up my paint brush to resume painting. The smell of turpentine hung in the air as I crouched beside a half finished canvas. My fingers were stiff with dried paint but I didn't mind. I was working on a commissioned piece that had to be delivered by evening but my kids were making it difficult for me. “Kiera." I yelled, tossing my brush aside. It was either Kian or Kiera and in the worst cases both of them decided to torment me. Having twins has always been my lifelong dream but right now, I doubt if I will ever wish for that again. "No, no, don’t—" I yelled but it was too late. The bowl of cobalt blue paint went flying in the air and in a split second, it crashed against the hardwood floor. The splatter landed everywhere, on
