The wind returned in the afternoon and pushed hard across the open hills as if it had been waiting all day for us to climb into it.

I walked beside Ezra. Grass bent and whipped against my legs. The sky stayed clear and cold. Every step felt heavier with the choice we still had not made.

Ezra spoke against the wind. “The choice still sits right in front of us. Keep going deeper into the unknown or begin a slow return with everything we have learned.”

I kept my eyes on the next rise. “Both roads

The wind returned in the afternoon and pushed hard across the open hills as if it had been waiting all day for us to climb into it.I walked beside Ezra. Grass bent and whipped against my legs. The sky stayed clear and cold. Every step felt heavier with the choice we still had not made.Ezra spoke against the wind. “The choice still sits right in front of us. Keep going deeper into the unknown or begin a slow return with everything we have learned.”I kept my eyes on the next rise. “Both roads are real. Neither one is shouting louder than the other.”“I no longer feel the need to decide quickly.”“The land will wait while we choose. It has waited through every night we have stayed out. It can wait longer.”We walked on. The wind tugged at my clothes and pushed cold fingers down the back of my neck. It carried the dry clean scent of grass and open earth. No path marked these hills. Only the direction our feet chose.Ezra said, “Quick decisions used to feel necessary. Like the whole day

  • Crescent Rivals    Chapter 92

Morning came pale and quiet across the wide shallow valley and the fear from the night still sat in my chest like a stone.I woke first. Ezra lay still beside me under the blanket. Both of us listened. Hard. For any return of those heavy steps. For the low breath that had moved through the grass in the dark. Nothing came. Only the thin light and the soft cold that had settled over everything.Ezra’s voice was barely more than breath. “It is gone.”I kept my eyes on the open ground. “For now. I still listen with every part of me.”“Fear came last night. Then it left. But it left something behind.”“It left a mark. The mark keeps the ears open. That is useful.”We stayed under the blanket longer than we needed to. The valley held its pale quiet like a held breath. No wind. No sound but our own careful breathing and the small shift of cloth when one of us moved.Ezra spoke again, still low. “The old life feels even farther away after surviving that. Like the danger cut another rope we di

  • Crescent Rivals    chapter 91

Late light found them in a wide shallow valley and the wind dropped almost to nothing. Dane and Ezra slowed. Their steps grew shorter on the dry grass. At a level place they finally sat. The blanket draped over both their shoulders. The air felt still for the first time in days. The valley held them without pressure. Ezra spoke first. “Strange peace sits here. No destination. No one waiting anywhere.” Dane pulled the blanket closer around them. “Peace that does not need to explain itself.” “I can feel the old life dissolving like mist. Thin. Almost gone.” “What remains is only the two of us and the ground under our feet. That is enough.” They sat while the last light thinned across the shallow valley. Dry grass stretched out in every direction. No rise. No wall. Only the soft dark beginning to gather at the edges. Ezra said, “No destination used to feel like failure. Now it feels like the first honest thing we have done in years.” “No one waiting used to feel like loneliness. N

Dawn came pale and cold across the open slope and left no warmth behind. Dane and Ezra woke under the blanket. For a long while they only breathed the last of the cold air in silence. The sky held a thin gray light. No birds called. No wind moved yet. Ezra sat up first. “Two nights out. Third morning. Still no pull.” Dane stayed on his back a moment longer. “None. I waited for it. It stayed gone.” They rose. Shook the frost from the blanket. Packed it without words. Then they walked again across the open land. Ezra spoke as their steps found a steady rhythm. “Growing certainty sits in me now. We may never return to the house at all.” Dane glanced sideways. “The thought no longer frightens you.” “No. It used to. Now it only feels true.” “It never truly frightened me either. Only the habit of fear remained. Habit is what we are walking out of.” They moved onto higher ground. The wind sharpened. Grass grew thinner and tougher under their boots. The slope fell away behind them wit

Late light found us higher on the long gentle slope and the wind finally let go of its edge.I slowed. Ezra slowed beside me. Our boots sank a little in the softer grass. We stopped where the rise leveled and the air felt kinder on my face. Below us the land dropped away in a wide darkening sweep. Behind us the slope climbed clean and steady.Ezra’s voice came low. “Is this far enough for now? Or does the land still invite us onward?”I looked at the open drop. “I do not know. Both feel true at the same time.”“I can no longer tell the difference between enough and more.”“The difference no longer matters. That is what we learned out here.”We stood a moment longer. The last color was draining from the sky. A thin line of brighter light still clung to the far edge of the land and then it too began to fade.Ezra said, “We could keep going. Light is not fully gone.”“We could stop. Wind is softer here.”“Either one sits right. That still feels new.”“New and solid.”We chose the stop. N

  • Crescent Rivals    chapter 88

Morning hit colder than the day before and went straight through the blanket into my bones.I sat up first. Ezra stirred beside me. The fire was nothing but gray ash. We poked at it only long enough to feel a ghost of warmth on our fingers. Then we rolled the blanket, tied it, and started walking again across the open land.Ezra’s voice came quiet beside me. “Two full days. No pull toward home. Not even a small tug.”I kept my eyes on the next rise. “I looked for it when I woke. Nothing was there.”“Third day already feels possible.”“Every new day feels possible now. That is what changed.”We moved through wider grass than before. Low hills rolled out in every direction. Land we had never walked. No paths. No signs that anyone had been here in a long time. The cold sat sharp in my throat with every breath.Ezra said, “We carry almost nothing. One blanket. An empty flask. Yet the open space keeps handing something back.”“It hands us room. Quiet. Hours that belong only to the next ste
